So how exactly do they work? I wished you would have used a whole rod. 😂 Do you leave your line ran through the guides? Is it just for the leader part? What?
Great video Brian, I remember the first episode I watched was up in Meiss meadows and how small the kids were. Wonderful stuff you keep bringing. Thanks so much.
Not sure where you are, but the Owen’s this time of year the grasshopper bite is insane, there are so many of them, I have a video on my phone where the grass looks pixelated as I’m walking through the area. It’s an awesome time.
Is there any way to ask permission from the local landowners I can't imagine why they would say no being out there with your family and all and keeping a small footprint
Yes, we received permission to fish this location from the landowner. Unfortunately, we could not contact them before our trip to ask permission. But we got lucky and ran into them on the road.
Congratulations on your Yellowstone cutthroat! Excellent video - I thoroughly enjoy your adventures in pursuit of the native trout of the West! Keep up your great work!
Nice! Had no idea that there were any of that variety in NV. My first thought was that the creek would be better fished with tenkara, but you got them! Well done!
Love your dialogue. I share your passion ! My now grown children spent their childhood traipsing the wilderness of CA. Great to see your kids doing the same. Kim’s husband
Oh my god. This one kicked my ass. It took my son and me two trips, probably a total of 5 days of fishing. I think we were there at the wrong time of year both times. Over those 5 days of hard fishing, we got a total of 5 takes between us.
When you start teaching on HOW to make the furling jig, how to make the furling “twister”and full tutorial, I won’t call this a show off vid. At least send viewers to a good site to get the knowledge……Ty
That was fantastic. Clear, precise, well done. Thank you for going to all of the trouble to make this great video. Now, just trying to find some good floating level line that didn`t come over on the Mayflower.
Which trails did you use to get to tunnel meadow? And is there a trial from tunnel meadow leading to the main river? I would like to plan a backpacking trip.
Their website may have a problem. I can only find it by typing Tiny Ten 3 into a search engine. Here is a direct link: tinytenkara.com/products/tiny-tenkara-3
Thank you for this series! My son (12) and I are working on the Western Native Trout Challenge, and we'll start the California Heritage Trout Challenge this year. The sense of wonder and awe inspired by these fish, living in these tiny systems for thousands of years, is incredible. Yellowstone cutthroat from a tiny trickle of a stream in NW Utah; Bonneville cutthroat from an ephemeral stream in eastern NV; Greenback cutthroat at 11,000 feet in Colorado; wild Gila trout from one of only two tiny streams in Arizona. We're looking forward to experiencing the species and habitats unique to California, and your videos have gotten us even more excited for the trip. I think we'll be at this same stream in about a month.
Good luck with your Challenges. It's great to hear that you are sharing this with your son. Chasing these fish has been some of my life's most fun adventures, and I am thankful I get to share the time with my family. My oldest is 13. They are growing up way too fast. It's great to hear you guys are enjoying the videos. Thanks.
Happy Fathers Day !!! Thanks for posting. Brings me back to when my dad taught me how to stream fish in the Sierras and how I taught my son stream fishing in the Sierras. Magical moments in time !!!
Looks interesting. I’ve definitely thought the bead head looked….off. But the trout don’t seem to care. If they can ignore that weird metal hook hanging down, I don’t think they are all that perceptive. General size, shape and color of the body seems important, but how do they not see that hook?!?
I agree bead heads work and I use them. This just looked like a super interesting topic and they turned out to be really fun to make. But I do think this technique has some merit when tied small. Thanks, -Brian
Besides myself, you are the only guy I have ever saw who gets down low to trout fish.I tip my hat to u sir.Great job there.I also were dark clothing to match the surroundings.
That’s actually a useful thing. I learned to tie from books, many of which were laid out like this. With the materials up from and a photo of each step. When tying from memory, I’m notorious for forgetting a step…like getting to the end of wrapping the body and realizing I didn’t tie in the wire for the rib. Doh.
I learned to tie with a beginner's kit that included a small booklet with photos and descriptions for each step. It seems natural to start tracking new patterns in a similar format. I hope this helps you remember that step as much as it has helped me. Thanks, Brian
Paid for the sheet but can't download it. Great idea, I've been trying for 40 years and can no longer remember all my patterns. this will help, thanks.
After you place your order you should be directed to a new page. The downloads will be at the top of the page. Click on the orange buttons titled: RECIPE TECH SHEET JPG and RECIPE TECH SHEET EXAMPLE. Download should start automatically. Let me know if this works if not I will email them to you. Thanks, Brian
Please always wet your hands before handling fish, if people don't it will remove their protective slimy barrier, which leads to infection, and eventually dying unbeknownst to the angler.
This is the set up I use to teach the scouts in the Fly Fishing merit badge... It seems easier for them to learn to cast the level 2 and 3 wt level fly line than a lighter fluorocarbon fly line. I tie a 6 inch piece of 8# teat mono to the fly line with a nail knot and a loop in the other end. I attach about 3 feet of 4# test mono with a Loop to Loop knot to form my leader. Kids are pretty hard on "leaders" when learning to cast and while fishing ... having the loop to loop connection makes it quick and easy to switch a new leader for ones filled with wind knots. LOL. Good video.
Thank you! I have read The Search for Sheepheaven Trout by Russell Hill but I didn’t know about Ghost Trout. I just ordered it. Thank you for the suggestion!
