The main problem with their organic feed packages I have noticed, is they add SYNTHETIC VITAMINS== TOXIC, Lab grown, no thanks.. Vitamins should be from food, not a lab..
I would definitely stop that feed if that’s the case and try some Whole Foods perhaps. I’ve done videos on feeding my chickens rice and beans. I would look up causes of that swelling and possible treatments for it, haven’t experienced that myself.
Beans/peas and rice is the main thing I feed as well but rather than cooking I spout them. I save money by growing pigeon pea trees and cowpeas. If I don't have enough I buy mung beans. We have a rice farm so there are always sacks or rice around, whole grain with the germ and bran still intact so no nutrients are processed out. I got the beans sprouting down on a 5 day cycle, I stat with mung beans to the 200ml line of a mason jar, soak the for a day, the 3 days in a tray and feed the 5th day. For now I just soak the rice 1 day but will scale down our normal sprouting process and work that out. I have weighed out the spouts on feed day but probably will do that soon to see how much more I am getting out of it, another big money saver. All the sprouts go into the compost pile which in itself is a little protein factory. The sprouting only adds a few extra minutes each day but nothing taxing, and probably more nutrition as well.
That is amazing corn!! I had no idea that kernels would form if the silks had been eaten! Did the deer chew up your Sun Chokes/ Jerusalem artichokes? Have you fed any to your chickens and did they like it? Here, the wild Jerusalem artichokes are not eaten by much of anything. I want to harvest some and see if the chickens would eat it. The deer always by pass the Jerusalem artichokes to eat the field corn!!
Yes the deer ate the tops of the Jerusalem artichokes where the flowers were growing! I’ve only had a few of them actually grow tall enough to form flowers because they’ve all been topped basically by the deer. I’m planning to harvest the roots very soon!
Rice beans and eggs are the three most simple basic food the each on their own has most of everything that humans need to thrive. Eggs alone have every vitamin, mineral and nutrient we need except for vitamin C.
Hey, Drew! I would apologize for bothering you w/comments, but I heard on Garden Viking that comments help the channel, no matter what. So here goes again!! I put my hens on POWDERED MILK and that source of calcium fortified w/ vit A & D has been successful!
Annie I love reading your comments! I watch his channel too I will try that. My only source of calcium for the chickens has been crushed egg shells I feed back to them.
@@onceuponatinyfarm WOW, Drew, you get that amazing result with only their eggshells?!?! I was feeding eggshells back to the hens and I was surprised at how well it worked. Then I ran out of their eggshells and started oyster shell made into pellets and their laying went to almost ZERO! The dairy was worked well, in a panic I even bought Greek Yogurt for them. My eggs are expensive!! But the ladies (7 1/2 mos old) are laying an egg each every day for the first time.
P.S. Forgot to ask you what are any and all supplements you feed your GORGEOUS HEALTHY HENS!!! Mine are definitely lagging behind. I finally got micronized Azomite on the way. I want to try L.A.B.S Steve Cornett talks about for hens/ any animals
The whole reason I bought his course was because I was interested in LAbs and I still haven’t tried that yet! I only feed them black soldier fly larvae and food scraps.
What type of calcium supplement do you feed your hens? My hens are WAY DOWN in egg production, a NASTY rooster who no longer walks the earth, was part of the problem according to your video "Why I got Rid of My Roosters" BUT I am suspicious that I have an inferior calcium supplement brand "Coastal" that does not say it is primarily oyster shell. THANK YOU for all your great info!!
I had to rewatch this video after one of my granddaughter's Silkie Bantam hens, 6 mos old, DEVELOPPED RED WADDLES & A RED COMB IN ABOUT A WEEK!! Silkie hens have grey skin on their faces, only roosters have red. This Hen/ Rooster grew a LOT and developed. rooster characteristics so QUICKLY so SUDDENLY. He has no lingering gender identity issues. Rooster Jr is tackling Dandy Randy Rooster for KING of the ROOST. Dandy Randy was an obvious rooster, even crowing, at 3 mos. Thanks for this video!! I'd feel like I have Franken Bird except for this info.
I felt silly when this first happened but apparently some roosters are just late developing to become a rooster. And if there’s more than one rooster in the flock I’ve noticed other quieter roosters become more dominant once the other roosters are removed.
I have them as well. They're a nightmare! Billions of seeds have germinated in my garden AND the seeds stick to everything. Hoes, rakes, tiller tines. EVERYTHING
I think it should be on every show that you have your little girl sing that country song. Just so precious!!! I have acquired about a half a dozen chickens and a non crowing rooster ( by his own choice) and at first was cursing it but now they are my buddies and I'm plus 4 chicks and eggs well forget about it, too many to count ! 6:52 6:55 6:57
I live in less than 400 sq ft it's okay for me but if I had a husband or a child living with me it would not be possible to live in such a tiny space so I understand what you're saying
I own 4 of these. They’re in the garden on pavers with the spinners for 2 years. No problems with tipping and it helps with the water to go through all the levels
I have tried the orbits before as well. They work as they should, but for me, and new grass seeding and over seeding, the orbit just does not work with the shortest frequency of every 6 hours, plus that means its watering overnight when I don't need to water (ex. noon, 6pm, midnight and 6am). I love the fact with the Melnor timer that I can set 4 times during the day per zone that I can choose to water. I actually connected a "Wye" connector (two female into one male) to zone output 1 and 2 and this can now water the same irrigation zone 8 different times per day if needed. I have the 4 zone model and love it!!
My 22 girls get a mix of corn, oats, dry mealworms, and fish meal in both of the feeders for all day I give them one house meal in the morning, bread, fruit, and veggie scraps, with pasta and beans. They free range from 12pm till dusk. They are extremely happy birds.
I have 7 original Greenstalks . Do yourself a favor and buy the spinner base with the wheels. You won’t regret it. The wheels lock so it will stay in place. When you are working on your Greenstalks especially in the fall and spring it’s convenient to move the planter around to get it either closer or out of the way depending on the situation. The base has six wheels are for paved surfaces. Moving a fully watered fully planted Greenstalk is easy despite its heavy weight. GET THE SPINNER BASE WITH THE WHEELS.
funny you say that because instantly after i set these up i wanted to move them to a different spot and couldn't because i didn't get the base with wheels! Regrets....
Im watching this video a year after you made it. Did your flame, mulch and flame again strategy work? We direct seed everything and were overrun by galinsoga this year. Never had it before this summer. Its a nuisance! d flame
It's still a problem this year. It just drops so many seeds and its overwhelming how many pop up there's just not enough time in the day to pick all the weeds. Flame weeding helps a bit making the beds more manageable, but they still pop up. The best solution is probably covering the affected beds with a tarp for a very long time, or just adding a considerable layer of compost on top of the beds to mulch them out. It really is a nuisance and I hate spending so much time picking weeds!
Flame weeding and mulching can give you a temporary weed free solution, but what happens when new weed seeds come in during the present growing season. The hand weeding battle will have to be repeated. All your prior efforts at area wide extermination will need to be repeated. Almost seems like you need to garden in a plastic tunnel, to provide a barrier.
I love to feed a healthy supplements of veggies kale spinach bean everything is so healthy no junk foods ever . Fruits free range flock of 30 Eggs a babies only no meat birds .
I just bought these yesterday at the dollar store I've always wanted a strawberry Tower and didn't know how to put it together or what to do about drainage holes thank you so much! Could you please tell me how you keep gophers from eating their roots of your inground garden beds? I've had a problem when I plant in the ground or even in garden beds that are low like that with gophers😢😢😢
P.S. I went back and found out your pot is a Ninja Foodie. I never heard of a pot you can bake banana bread in! I like the idea of sweet potato cooked right in with the rice & beans.... bet carrots would work, too
Thank you for this!! All your videos on "How to Feed Chickens" are chock full of great info &ideas. Wish I hadn't just bought an Instant Pot...Food Ninja sounds VERY intriguing. I LOVED the Short with Lucy & Matty feeding sweet corn to your hens! Those are lucky, well fed chickens!!
I really enjoyed your garden tour!! The cattle panel trellis did straighten out with the weight of your tomatoes and cucumbers and butternut squash. I'm VERY impressed with how much you were able to grow on that cattle panel. I did not trellis as I should have, next year getting as many plants off the ground as possible is my main goal.
@@anniebancroft1175 thanks Annie! I did grow a lot on the cattle panel but I’ve realized I made my walkways too tight now that everything is full size so if I could do it all over again designing the garden I’d make sure at least 2 feet is in the walkways so it’s more comfortable
I'm curious how it turns out for you. I'm getting ready to embark trying out vermicomposting also and with two 5 gal buckets also. I have been reading articles and watching videos on the subject. It seems like there is a consistent agreement that worms need sufficient air. It may be that, although you drilled holes into the bottom of the bucket, that may serve well to separate the liquid from solids but not necessarily be creating a source of fresh air intake as the spicket will be closed most all the time. So think about adding holes along the upper area under the lid lip that is above the buckets enclosed area that is exposed to outside air. That way the worms can breath better and keep cooler in hot weather. Think about adding screen inside to block bugs from entering those exposed holes. Another person on the internet actually cut most of the lid out except the ring that snaps on. Then he put a piece of breathable fabric draped over the bucket and snapped on the ring over the fabric to get even better air flow that also keeps other bugs out. If using that method then probably don't need holes under top lip. But if rains then I guess need those holes and exchange for a backup solid lid so prevent overwatering. Devil's in the details! Lol!
Thanks for all the advice. I think the top bucket should have some more holes drilled into the sides. This actually worked well and made some worm castings but the worms didn’t survive the winter.
That tomato trellis is awesome! Garden is looking lovely. I’ve done my cucumbers similarly with a trellis and they are doing very well. I think you are right about air flow. Val C
@@stephencameron1709 thank you! It has worked out well but after all this rain we just got everything is looking a little rough! Hopefully it all recovers
