Disappointing. This was on my TBR and maybe I'll still get to it but not with such high hopes. I think if they'd started as long time pen pals, like the Kate and Cecilia books are written, that'd suit the "best friends" title. Reunited for the Season, they catch feelings for each other. Victorian Parent Trap has so much potential too. Most Ardently, the trans Pride and Prejudice retelling, does the historical notes well. Evidence presented with a strong "don't worry about it" disclaimer.

while I do agree that an author's note of some sort would've been nice, I'd argue that the cover and the blurb (and I guess the title being a taylor swift lyric lmao) go a long way to establish that this is just a fluffy, anachronistic ladeeda romance book. but I don't think historical romance is the write genre for this book because that does imply at the very least an attempt at accuracy. idk what else it'd be though. and the stepsister thing is....weird.
also yea i'm not like. chomping at the bit for homophobia or anything lmao but this really modern acceptance of queer relationships in historical settings always takes me out of the story unless, as you said, it's very intentionally presented as an idealized version of historical society. while "romantic friendships" where two women treated each other like romantic partners, relationships that sometimes even crossed into sexual relationships, were somewhat normalized (even if they weren't really spoken of) and in some particular eras even seen as healthy, that was between like. girls. that was somewhat normalized for young girls who aren't yet "on the market" in terms of marriage because it was written off as this childish frivilous playacting that they'll grow out of or as "practice" for when they get a husband. the moment girls or young women were presented into society and were expected to be focusing on finding a husband, that shit was not tolerated. this was my view of a different historical sapphic fantasy i read, mortal follies. i was able to give it a bit more leeway because it's a fantastical setting. as in, it's very much real world regency england but also people are just aware that magic and fairies and gods exist and that's just a part of life. but it's still so anachronistic in weird ways that it really felt like the author was trying to have their cake and eat it too. there was this one character that was like. 2020s booktok fandom girlie was her whole personality. talked about shipping and how she wished that the books she read shared an interconnected universe and was completely unphased like not in the slightest upon learning that her best friend potentially had romantic feelings for a woman and even offered to let her practice kissing on her in a really casual way and she's just so quirky lmao. and she as a character took me out of the story so hard. if mortal follies had pushed it just a little more with the anachronism i would have been fine. like, there's already magic and gods and stuff so if it had been only regency england in name and aesthetics but was otherwise ahistorical i wouldn't have blinked. but if the author is going to go out of their way to preserve and depict period-accurate racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, et cetera you can't also have these characters (and especially that one i mentioned) talk like they're from the modern day. my main thing is that, i don't need or expect 100% historical accuracy in a historical romance, i'd read serious historical fiction if that's what i cared about, but i feel like there has to be *some level* of historical accuracy in order to justify it being a historical romance in the first place. like if you're not going to care, why not make this either a completely fictional world or set it in the modern day this makes no sense.

I think that most young aristocratic women still knew what sex was _long_ before the subject of marriage came up since, as you've said, they needed to maintain a good image to avoid potential scandal, which would be very difficult when you don't know what to watch out for. Also, word of mouth did exist and those whose parents didn't equip the with proper understanding (yet) might get lucky and "receive their education" (though this probably not the best quality information) from their peers a little earlier than their gaurdians perhaps planned. In general there seems to me no reason why young ladies (realistically speaking) wouldn't know the absolute basics of intercoarse. (Unless what you've said in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mCaIHj-TomE.html was just hiperboly and really meant that they would have no idea how to do a propper steamy lesbian kiss, which, yeah, they wouldn't.)
I totally get what you’re saying! However, I will say that there is a lot of historical precedent for young women being kept in the dark about sex, specifically because their purity was a commodity! And so by not educating them about it at all, it was thought to preserve their purity better for marriage. It’s the result of a patriarchal society steeped in purity culture, where the subject of sex is so taboo that young women were generally not told anything about it until marriage, despite most young men having experiences with prostitutes before getting married. I’m definitely not saying that young women never heard anything about it or were completely unaware of there being SOMETHING taboo that had to do with marriage, but this would have been mostly confusing because nobody was going to straight up give them any real info about it. Also remember this is the Victorian time we’re talking about, so even doctors barely knew how sex and procreation worked, much less young women who were not allowed to learn about those kinds of things. That being said though, I am a hyperbolic person, so it’s fair to assume that maybe there’s a little of that going on too lol

To be fair I have more expierance with late georgian and transitional texts than with strictly victorian writings (as that is when my book takes places and hence my area of reaserch). What I've written above was, therefore, mere conjecture from what I know about georgians and (vaguelly) other time periods, and "common sense", I guess. It might be that victorians were (I know at least that they were certainly more prudish than the georgians) _particularly_ prudish as compared with their ancestors in general, and thus making cases of completely oblivious "young ladies" more commonplace. Like, I know that "the angel of the home" ideal for women was a thing in the victorian era but in the (I guess, you'd call them "conduct books") _I_ have read the ideal woman very much still retains a lot of "head of the household"-y atributes characteristic of earlier periods. Also servants in these late georgian and transitionary works are still relatively regarded, which (though to be fair I haven't reaserched this quite as thoroughly) they apparently weren't later on. So yes, the culture seems to have changed a lot. Anyway, if you have any good reading recomendation for, like, an overview of the victorian mentality and costom, it would be very welcome!

Never thought of Memoirs as being a choice in the nonfiction category! I’m not a fiction lover, so Memoirs caught my attention-self-improvement through the experiences of others. Reserved Little Weirds and the story through stories one.
To be honest not the kind of books I would read(especially the chess one, just because how unrealistic it is) but was very nice how you surmised the plots. Nice video!
