Lem sometimes had his vibes set up in my mother’s little jazz club, the Sans Souci in Wilmington, Delaware. When walking his beat he would use the call box to take a break, then come into the club take off his jacket, and play. The club was on lawyer’s row on King Street one of them would be sure to be around for a lesson with Lem.

Hello Tim, Im a keyboardist who play on a small gig and local cafes, didnt get enough education like music course or theory but at the same time I really like jazz and all the complex solo from famous artists or pro musicians friends. I play pop and and all arround music, self taught, and on my 4 or 5th years of music journey, i just realized that im lack at solos, clarity, technique, and fundamental of advanced chord progressions, most of what i did was based on feel and i realized that its not enough. I really thankful for ur lecture that i just watched, definitely gonna try it on my keyboard right after watching this hahah, its really helpful, thankyou Tim Collins, keep making great videos, greeting from Indonesia, subscribed

Have lived a comparatively long jazz life, and being an ardent attender of jam sessions, I can say with some honourable exceptions, even more familiar standards are unlikely to be called, more so if the specific tune is not included in the ubiquitous smart device, Real Book app. I have thought about this a good deal. Formal jazz education has had a less than benign influence, teaching, in general, a somewhat narrow repertoire. Also too, gigs at such events as weddings, christenings etc. are now somewhat uncommon, gigs where you really do need, in your head, a good many standards. This being so, there is little practical impetus to learn them. Though this should excuse young musicians from wanting to learn them, just for the melodic riches that are out there for the taking. There were only two titles from you list that I did not know. Picked most of them up within the first two bars. But, I am one of the older guys. Even now, in general, I find at least one, new to me, composition, every week. Recently. "You Know I Care". Duke Pearson. Check out the Joe Henderson version. Magic!

What minor scale are you using as the basis for your harmonic analysis? You seem to be using a mixture of scales. The traditional basis of minor harmony is the harmonic minor scale, but you seem to be using other minor scales. For example, the III chord in minor based on the harmonic minor scale would be an augmented major chord. Also, I tend to hear this tune as being a mixture of B Minor and the relative major.
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes Месяц назад
I generally think of natural minor, and use harmonic (or melodic) minor when the F#7 chord comes.

I always wonder what kind of mallet you use to get such a percussive sound
@TimCollinsVibes
@TimCollinsVibes Месяц назад
In this video, I was using the mallets I almost always use, innovative Percussion, RS 251. But you’ll notice that when I actually play, the resonators are not on the instrument. So it’s a lot more percussive sounding.

3 years late to the party, but WOW. Three great musicians really going at it. I am a piano/keyboard player, and I think you vibraphonists are amazing. How you do what you do just boggles my mind, and it is just as fun to watch a vibraphonist play as it is to hear. I am very fascinated with the vibes, possibly because they are laid out exactly like a piano keyboard. But anyway, BRAVO to a GREAT performance!
