It is a fun family wagon. I am looking forward to the 2020 Outback XT equinox edition. It has the Forester's select offroad feature, making it more capable.
One of my favorite drives near SD. Did it in my 04 FXT with stock tires, but re-ran the trail with Yoko all terrains. What a difference in control and enjoyment!
Tires do make a difference. I don't know if they would on an Outback. It is underpowered and the electronics are protecting the CVT. I'm thinking grippy tires would be too much for the drivetrain. I love Anza Borrego.
I drove a 2014 Forester w/CVT in Ocotillo numerous times and the experience improved even with the next set of all seasons (non-oem) once the stockers wore out. Currently I have a 2018 that I have taken on local trails and to Big Bear so far. Agree with you on the weaknesses of the CVT. It’s rather soft and doesnt transfer torque effectively enough. I think I’ll get all terrains soon to reduce constant slippage in dirt and they handle being aired down much better.
Just watched this amazing vid! People say that the Outback is a really capable car but I didn't know it was this capable! And you tackled that very challenging terrain with the stock tires and stock suspension/no lift. Brilliant car and driving, mate!
Bryan Evans That was crazy. We just had enough tow straps and a 100' rope that was doubled to pull me on over the top. I was impressed that the x - mode let then Outback make it as far as it did.
DubZach Believe me I tried. I had my foot down all the way. The Subaru controls everything. Even on the sand, the car would not spin the tires. And with the throttle all the way, the RPMs did not pass 2500.
No you don't. Just returned from Borrego Springs and the Salton Sea. I drove to Fonts Point and the wash had been transformed by the rain/water. Very muddy, my stock tires were at their limit. Luckily other heavy vehicles had packed down a trail that I could follow. But, no it is not safe to be in a wash with rain.
