Long Bay jail was always headquarters & the main central Sydney jail all inmates went to . It was built originally to house women & men. On the large complex it is divided into a reception prison, a central indistrial prison, a remand centre, a training centre & a jail medical ward & annexe before a new full seperate Long Bay prison hospital was built out the front. Then an underground cutting edge electronic zoo Supermax prison was built at Long Bay & opened in 1977-8 to house the states 30 or 40 worst inmates. Called Katingal the concrete underground escape proof experiment failed within a year in operation when infamous Katingal prisoner Russel mad dog Cox pulled off one of the greatest solo escapes from the most modern secure electronic underground bunker Katingal in 1978-9. Cox successfully escaped from the new electronic zoo Katingal & spent 8 years on the run before being re captured. NSW corrective services & government were embarrassed by Cox's escape from the new multi million dollar Supermax & it was closed within months of the escape. Later a new warrants(fines) & weekend detention centre was added on the complex known as area 7. Then the secret supergrass prison ( special purposes prison ) was built on the side near the prison plant nursery, & most recently a new state of the art multi million dollar forensic prison hospital has been built on the complex also now. So Long Bay prison complex is a massive complex consisting of atleast 8 seperate inner prisons on the whole complex. Now it's used as a special programs centre & medical, forensic, mental health, geriatric units & wards & maybe c classo minimum security section still at area 7 & maybe 17 wing?. But anyway i believe Long Bay jail is the headquarters & foundation of the NSW prison system since early 1900's, with the richest & most colourful history of NSW Sydney's historic famous & infamous men & women & crimes . I was just reading about this. It was saying that many of the victims were conscious for up to 3-4 mins when the plane was going down. They could have been alive when they struck the ground. How awful. Another thing I read, was that they believe looters came and stole from the bodies. None had watches or jewellery on and they believe the bodies had been moved. Some bodies were found still in their seats and some were thrown into nearby fields. So sad.
