Hi, a big thanks for taking the time out to visit our RU-vid channel.
We are Gary & Janis a couple from the UK, with a desire to explore the world and share the tales that follow in its footsteps.
We love heading off on road trips and mini-breaks near and far. So, we have a mixture of videos for you to rummage through and hopefully will give you the inspiration to grab your bags and head off on an adventure for yourself.
We're both a little camera shy at showing our faces on our videos, although you may see us pop up from time to time.
So, please stop by, say hello and click on that subscribe button 🟢
My family used to go to Sandwich because my mother's and twin brother was born in Walmer, my material grandparents was living in Rochester not near Sandwich is Ham
Walmer's not too far from Deal, another splendid town. And the Ham Sandwich sign is famous, if a little run down now. All in all a lovely part of the world if it ever stops raining here ☔ Thanks so much for stopping by, All the best, Gary & Janis
Dave, What can I say? It's one of my earliest videos on RU-vid. Hopefully, lots of lessons have been learned, and my more recent content is more sympathetic to the location. All the best, Gary & Janis
I have good memories of both Bodiam Castle and Rye from the time I studied in London. Hope to get the chance to revisit some time. Thanks for the video
Hi Annamária, So, glad it brought back fond memories from your time in England - Where are you from originally? I am really pleased you managed to get outside London, which is a great city, but there is so much more to this country, and it's good to explore. Let's hope you get back soon 🤞 All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Karen, It really is, and on our recent travels to Well & Salisbury, we found a link we either forgot about or just didn't know. The late Prime Minister Ted Heath (1970-1974) was born in Broadstairs and returned a few times. We spotted a couple of paintings and a photo of him in later life at Broadstairs. We want to pop back, but we'll avoid the peak of summer; it can get a little busy. Anyway, thanks so much for dropping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Karen, Small world: I was brought up in Welling, and went to Bexley Grammar School, Janis was brought up in Sidcup. So Ted Heath was our MP too 😀 From all accounts, he was a very well-respected gentleman. It was nice to find that link back to home on our travels. All the best, Gary & Janis
I visited Scotney Castle in June - July 1988. I wish I had seen a background video like this, which would have provided me with tools to increase my understanding and enjoyment. Later I attended the IPPS Conference in Southampton University. I met Christopher Lloyd, who was very friendly and invited me to Sissinghurst.
Hi, How fantastic, lovely places to visit. We're lucky; we pop by often and see them to get a little inspiration for our garden through the seasons. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Been looking at the Thanet towns and Folkestone to live but I looked at Deal and I’m in love! It’s got the coolness of Margate and the arty charm of Folkestone, not far from Canterbury and an hour away from London, safe to say I’m moving there in September
Hi, That's such good news; I hope the move goes well. We love all of those Kent coastal towns for the reasons you mentioned. They're all subtly different, and we like them for their differences. When we got our new car in May, Deal was the place we chose to come to for a quick drive and fish 'n' chips by the sea: just perfect. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, All the best for the future. Gary & Janis
Hi, You have to do better than that - what's terrible, my video or Hastings? If it's the former; okay, my videos are not for everyone, I get that. If it's the latter; can't agree, there's a lot worse places in the world, and I think Hastings brings a lot of joy to a lot of people, just walk past the adventure golf to see that. Anyway, have a good Sunday. Hopefully, the sun is shinning in your part of the world. Cheers, Gary & Janis
Hi Polly, That should be lovely, such a serene part of the world. If you're coming by train, you'll probably come via Aylesford village, which would be nice too, if not it may be worth a walk through. Here's hoping you have a wonderful time on your visit. All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Ani, It's fine; there's plenty of places around the lake to upp over an enjoy the view safely, and then you have all the towns and villages too to park up, explore and take in lakeside views. All the best, Gary
Hi, It's changed so much since then, and it's been a rollercoaster ride. Still, I don't think the golden sands of the beach have changed at all. Still a lovely place to visit, although madness in summer. Thanks for stopping by. All the best, Gary
Hi Trebor, We know Sutton Valance, we often drive through there. Perhaps I need to put it on a stopover on a little road trip from Maidstone? It's a lovely little place, and the King's Head always look so appealing just before we drop down the hill. Anyway, all the best, Gary & Janis
Hello Trebor, It is such a beautiful place; it won't have changed too much, except the gardens have matured a bit more since then. The National Trust takes such care in its properties; hopefully, they'll be here for many years to come. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hello Trebor, It's a beautiful slice of Kent, well worth a visit these days, too. There's the new Greek inspired garden, else little has probably changed. It looks beautiful on an English summer's day. Once again, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Carola, We had a wonderful time here, and will return one day, such a lovely place, nice views, great food and wonderful people. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Louisa, Thank you for the correction, and I would hope is protected, but hope counts for little. It's a wonderful space so let's pray that it's left as it should be. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Cyprus, and it was nice to get out and explore a little. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Ann, So glad you liked it, a wonderful bit of 'Old England', and hopefully worth the travel - where else did you visit on your travels here? I hope they were as rewarding. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to stop by to leave us a comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Started in London, to Dover , sandwich, now in Brighton. Will be going to the Jurassic coast and Cotswolds . Uk is beautiful, lots to see . I am British but migrated many moons ago .
Hi Ann, That sounds fantastic, Brighton, and this weather - must be wonderful. With the Jurassic Coast & Cotswolds yet to come - 🤞 we leave the sun turned on. We hope so as we're off to Wells & Salisbury next week - who knows, it's the British summer. I bet it's nice to be back; the place has changed a touch over the years. Anyway, all the best, happy & safe travels. Gary & Janis
Hi, mixed feeling about the Turner Contemporary - it looks a lot better than some of the post-war monstrosities thrown up after the war, but understand it's not to everyone's taste, but hey-ho. As someone who's been coming to Margate on and off since the '70s when I was a kid, I'm liking the direction it's taking - last visit was in May, and a cheeky visit to Olby's 😋 Anyway, thanks for stopping by, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Crystal, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. You have to love a little quirkiness, and you can always find it if you look in the historic cities, towns & villages of this isle. We're always on the lookout for more. Anyway, all the best, Gary & Janis
Greetings from far away (🇦🇺🦘), thank you for the splendid presentation of this splendid place. The musical accompaniment and bird song and your restrained commentary are just perfect and have evoked fond memories of a visit in 2005 on an equally sublime sunny day.
Hi, So glad we brought back fond memories, the great thing about National Trust properties is they don't appear to change much; of course, they do, and that's the skill of the gardeners. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Paul, sad truth is a lot of roads are like this some worse. Those responsible should hand their head in shame, but they don't just offload the blame. Anyway, enough negativity, it's still worth it - lots to see and do on the way. The observant will always notice a pub or two - just need to negotiate the designated driver! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Steve, It's the Ordnance Survey map app. Pop this into a browser - bit.ly/3BYfLjy There's a free version, but that doesn't include the OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps. It's a great little tool. You can go for a monthly subscription to try it out. Personally, I wouldn't be without it when exploring the countryside. Hope that's of help, All the best, Gary & Janis
@@OurWorldForYou Thanks for the reply, I really couldn't make out what you said. I'll give that a try...always looking for green lanes and tracks to use as back doubles...the traffic is horrendous here in SE London/ Kent and I ebike now, at 59 and realise I'm not immortal anymore...the S on my chest has disappeared, so avoiding roads wherever I can is a must. Atb Steve
Steve, Sorry about that, must have been a bit mubbly. I'm 57, and I realised those immortal days are over (the groans I occasionally make after cleaning the car are the clue! The free version of the app, with the standard mapping allows you to toggle on the National Cycle Network, but the Premium version does give you much more. It sounds like a wise decision to aim to avoid the roads of SE London. When we lived in Dartford, I used to take a leisure route along the River Darent. This route led me to Farningham and The Lion pub, all very nice on a sunny evening. All the best, Gary (& Janis)
Thanks so much, lovely city to explore as you know. Lot's of history, lots of character, but not a lot of tourists from outside Spain. Thanks for taking the time to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
Hey Julie, We did visit All Saints Street at 08:23 - Okay, didn't have too much to say, but I don't like to bore people. Thanks for watching anyway, All the best, Gary & Janis
I hope to visit Hythe someday, Its just my kind of holiday, lovely videos you have made, we shall be visiting Tenderden next month, i could spend ages in these places you are showing us so thank you!
Hi, Thanks so much, so glad you enjoy the videos. Tenterden in summer will be lovely - let's hope you can get to Hythe soon. All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi Vickie, Absolutely, Ash is a pretty little village, just a few short miles from Sandwich, a beautiful part of the world. I might have to include it in a little road trip in the future around that part of Kent. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Holly, A pleasure, so glad you liked it, (and hopefully enjoying the National Trust videos too). We've another video coming soon of a little road trip from Rye, taking in some of the other beautiful little towns and villages en route - and joining some of the local NT locations too. Thanks for stopping by to comment, All the best, Gary & Janis
I believe those light-duty rail lines were used by the commercial fishermen, to transport their catch from the distant shore over the shingle to the road, for onward transport to be sold.
Lawrie, I think you're spot on, because trying to shift a catch over the shale without it would have been arduous, and that's after a few hours at sea and with time against you. It's a beautiful place, but for those working on it, a challenge, Anyway, thanks so much for dropping by and taking the time to leave a comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
As a child we used to have our annual holidays in Margate every year. My grandparents lived on Grotto Hill and we stayed with them every year. It has been 50+ years since I have been there but I have just booked a short break in July for myself and the wife and I hope to bring back some of the many happy memories of my time there. I am really looking forward to it.
Paul, How wonderful! It has changed over the years, including some tougher years, but now it has regained some of its glory. Dreamland looks magnificent, and the walk around the harbour arm is fabulous. The little streets around the old town are a joy, so enjoy your vists - I hope the sun shines on you and you can enjoy the golden sands of Margate. All the best, Gary & Janis
Daniel, If it's only two weeks, you're lucky 😯 A drive through a lot of England can be dogged by roadworks in almost every county. Still better that than potholes I guess. All the best, Gary & Janis
We just visited this garden 3 weeks ago. It was great to wander through again, thank you. I enjoyed the minimal talking and lovely musical accompaniment.
Liz, Thanks so much; we're so glad you enjoyed your visit and our little video. Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Çok teşekkürler Sul - burası çok güzel bir şehir Herşey gönlünce olsun Gary & Janis ---------- Thanks so much Sul - it is such a beautiful city All the best Gary & Janis
Your videos are always gems, a very welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of today's society. I've watched a lot of them so far as they tend to install an atmosphere of calm whenever I watch one. You both are way up there head and shoulders above anything I've seen as far as travel videos go. This one in particular held a very welcome surprise when you started rendering the poem "If", which has always been among my favourites. I've heard it read by many people, including such people as Sir Michael Caine, Tom O'bedlam, Robert Morley, Dennis Hopper (twice), Harvey Keitel and many more. Your rendering is without a doubt among the best I've heard. Thank you for that! I sincerely hope i get to visit this place some day. Have a wonderful day.
Luc, Thank you so much, you are very kind. I'm not sure if my rendition outshines those you mentioned, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. A visit to a National Trust property is usually a very calming experience, and when I come to edit & narrate my videos, I think that comes across, plus, in life, I try to remain calm, the world's a little easier place then. Thanks again for your kind words, All the best, Gary & Janis
Winston Spencer Churchill, the greatest Leader and my Hero, the ' LAST LION ' ! I was most fortunate to visit his Great Country Home, and his final Resting Place, in October of 2019. Thanks for your Excellent, Video ❣ 🇬🇧 Roland Singh, Canada 🇨🇦
Hi Roland, Thanks so much, I am so glad you liked the video. We are very fortunate that Chartwell is only a short distance away, and we visit regularly to see the changes in the gardens, and it reminds us of how much a family man Winston was. We have also seen his last resting place in Westminster Abbey, but unfortunately, video isn't allowed, so we just have the photos from that visit. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Stay safe, stay well and happy travels. Gary & Janis
Awww brings back so many memories for me. I would ride my bike there every day as a kid and grew up fishing there and all over there when my dad took me and would go to all the parks and the many other things and then on the walks my parents loved going on there, then as time went on I had my own kids and I took them there for years as they grew up and I hope that they will take their kids there and enjoy the place as much as me. It has always been such a beautiful place to me from a little kid right through my 40s and even though I now live in NRW Germany, it still is and always will be my favourite place to be, what ever I am doing there. I love how it just has not changed in so many years, I mean I walked around sandwich as a kid over 40 years ago and apart from the vehicles being new, the place itself is almost identical to the first time I went there. I cant wait to take my German wife and my new son there, if truth has to be known, I wished I had moved there rather than Germany, maybe I can talk her round some day, we will see lol
Hi, It will be lovely to visit Sandwich with your family. You're right; it probably hasn't changed a huge lot over the years, and on a sunny day, there really isn't a bettre place to visit in Kent for a good dash of nostalgia. I hope you all make it back here someday, really soon. All the best Gary & Janis
Hi, I think you're being a little harsh. Places like Leuven must thrive off tourism, and I guess it has the perfect blend of students during the week, and tourists at the weekend. If there weren't tourists, a lot of the businesses may close without the trade. Maybe, who knows? Anyway, one thing that is sue, Leuven is a lovely city. All the best, Gary & Janis
@@OurWorldForYou Jesus Christ, don`t you get my point? It is not against visitors, it is about those creatures that I described up above. Do you know the difference between barbarians and tourists? Barbarians only destroy, tourists desecrate everything.
We married in 1965 and lived on Castle Hill Ave. Loved the area, moved to Dungeness 1967 RNSSS cottages, worked at the A Station, thanks for the memories. Terry Johnson Taranaki NZ.
Terry, that is great to hear, glad it brought back fond memories. Hopefully you got to see our video on Dungeness too. We're off to Greatstone today, so will probably pass through Hythe on the way. Anyway, I hope all is good in NZ; you must be heading into your winter soon. We've had a few days of sunshine, so it's feeling a little more summery here now after a very wet winter. Take care, all the best. Gary & Janis
Oh this is my favourite place ever. I found it extremely spiritual. It would be my dream to afford a cottage there. I forget the name of Derek Jarman's film but clearly he felt the same. It's so beautiful and atmospheric & faded & charming. Thanks so much for the video & your soothing voice. 😊

Thank you for this trip through my city of birth and where I still reside. Nice video, nice commentary and in a calming voice. 😉 Well done! Next time you should really visit the Dossin Kazerne Memorial. Currently you can let them record your voice pronouncing the name of one of the many deported which will be used for a huge memorial project.
Hi Bertrand, Thank you so much; I am glad you like our video. We really would have loved to visit the Dossin Kazerne Memorial, however our time was limited. I do believe we will return to Mechelen one day, and visiting the memorial will be a must. I have to come back because the Gouden Carolus keeps calling 😊 Thanks agains for stopping be and taking the time to comment. All the best, Gary & Janis
Hi, I really did try, honest. I use things like pronounce.com, and watch other RU-vid videos where the presenter's natural language is that of the location; it's just what comes out of the mouth gets anglicised. It's a little like you know a German speaker, who speaks perfect English, is a German speaker, whether they be German, Austrian or Swiss. That's just how it is - sorry if it offended you. And one thing is for sure: I am neither stupid, nor arrogant. All the best, Gary & Janis
Just loved this video. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on Germany in the past few weeks because we are leaving soon for a two week vacation there. This is one of the best I’ve seen. You gave a wonderful overview of the town. But really it was also your voice which is calm and well modulated and the light music in the background. Thank you. We will definitely stop in Dinkelsbuhl thanks to your video.
Hi Margaret, Firstly, have a wonderful vacation, we're just a little jealous because we love Germany. It's a beautiful country to explore, and we really want to discover more of it. I'm so glad you enjoyed our video and my style of presenting. Visiting should be a relaxing experience. Happy and safe travels, Gary & Janis
