Hey everyone, Zoltan here from Ph3lan's Miniatures.
I'm a passionate hobbyist, deeply in love with the intricate universes of Warhammer and Infinity Corvus Belli miniatures. On this channel, I share some techniques I've picked up along my painting journey, hoping it might help or inspire others. I try my hand at detailed guides but also occasionally venture into the realms of contrast and speed painting.
Whether you're a seasoned painter or just starting out, I'm always learning and evolving, and I invite you to join me on this ever-colorful adventure.
Hey @ph3lansminatures - I just discovered your channel, good stuff! I'm late to the party but can you elaborate on when a ventilation / spraying booth is necessary and when it's fine airbrushing without it? There are multuple sequences in this video where you spray directly on your table without any booth, just a mask. Doest it make a difference if I airbrush acrylics, inks, varnish, etc... ? Would you say it's ok to airbrush for x minutes without a booth? Or what are the decisive factors? Many thanks and keep up the good work!
Hey, there. Welcome to the channel! 😀 That's a good question, and I saw a lot of people having very strong and differing opinions on it. Personally, I spray at my desk and in a mask ( ideally a proper respirator) when I only highlight with low pressure end small bursts. ( Sometimes, I bend this rule and do zenithal highlights). When I prime or spray bigger surfaces, where I have to spray in long bursts or almost continous stream, I use a spray booth. Keep in mind that I only use acrylics, so no enamels or anything else toxic. But even though acrylics are not toxic in general, you don't really want to inhale atomized plastic particles, so better safe than sorry. I hope that helps :)
Thank you! 😊 Itis interesting to hear that you would like the old one more. For me the new one is just objectively better 😅 I guess it goes to show you that there is no such thing as objective when it comes to this kind of stuff 😄
Hi Ph3lan, I haven't heard about you in the past 5 years, it's great to see you beeing active again. Do you still work for the same company you used to? Your core fans still miss your other content. Yours sincerely, Péter.
Hey Peter! Welcome to the new channel. You are the second person from the old channel messaging me this week 😊 Unfortunately, I don't play the game anymore so it is very unlikely that I would do content for it in the future. For the last 4 years or so I have been getting deeper and deeper into painting minis, so I don't have much time to play video games, especially competitively 😅 But thank you so much for your support even after so many years. These comments really bring back memories :)
Thank you for this interesting videos, I learned a lot. I shouldn't have watched it before going to work tho, now the only thing I want to do is pick up a brush and paint all day 😂
Hey ! Thank you for your amazing tutorial ! I'm wondering if your techniques are doables for a complete beginner like me, and i would like to know if is it possible to reproduce your zenithal priming without an airbrush ? Again thank your for your work and your answer.
Hey Thomas! If you are a beginner, the contrast paint techniques are definitely the easiest to do. They are a very easy way to get into the hobby, but once you are comfortable with using contrast I would still recommend learning how to paint with regular acrylics as well. Ultimately, you can do a lot more with those. A zenithal highlight is absolutely doable without an airbrush. You can prime the model black with a spray can, and then spray them white ( or rather light grey) from above with a spray can again leaving the bottom side of the mini black.
This is actually a pretty old clip and I have a new version painted of this model. Check out this video 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aeLhjk70VgE.html This should have the paints for the NMM, but I also have a written guide with a full list on my Patreon.
That competition was utter garbage, my local flgs organised a better competition than this rigged bs. I saw your entry and thought it was awesome! Mine didn't even make the people's choice shortlist 😂
That's weird, have you tried an extra matt varnish? 1-2 layers should make it totally matt. I guess the fact that I mostly use matt paints (Ask interactive and Kimera are both very matt) to begin with helps.
@@ph3lansminiatures I will try with the extra matt! Whenever I go to any hobby store its already out of stock but I will persevear. I mostly own Citadel and they are pretty sattin
My favorite these days is the Max Matt from Green Stuff World. That thing can make anything matt it touches :D In case you can find it, I can really recommend it.
YES!! Finally someone said NADIRAL!. 😀I've been waiting for years for someone to actually know what the proper term for "anti-zenithal" is. For those who dont know the opposite of zenith is nadir (the lowest point on an arc (or situation))
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the entries there :D I thought that category was for beginners, but apparently it was more like the advanced category was for professional painters and the beginner one for good painters who are not pros 😀 Well, I still enjoyed it, and getting beaten by Arnau Lazaro is an honor :D
@@ph3lansminiatures excellent way to view it. I'm still salty about an apparent pro-painter (who's been painting for at least 5 years) being chosen as the winner for a category defined as getting for people with less than 1 year experience, and being given a massive cash prize. I'm naturally suspicious by nature, and I'm just wondering how this can't be a bit of corruption on CB's part. I mean, they've been investing a lot in influencers lately with the runup to N5 - which is really great, and about time! - but I'm certainly suspicious that they basically fixed this thing, which - if true - would be really bad faith towards their community. Anyway - must try to stay positive! A whole lot of AMAZING and inspiring paint-jobs came out of that competition, so that can only help the game and the community grow into N5!
@@ph3lansminiatures Excellent! Yeah, I really love it. Please do a video for it! You know - once you've actually unpacked, gotten settled, etc :-) I was looking at Starmada in Infinity, and they've got a similar unit - there "Roadbot". But ughhh - the model for that really puts me off. So Su-Jian will be doing double duty, proxying for that thing!
I tend to agree, the rules could have definitely been a little clearer and the organization a bit better. But this was their first try and they said they would do better next time. Maybe next time there will be a separate diorama category and I can do something crazy like this again 🤣
I looked up his version and other than the fact that it has green OSL, and it is the same model, his and mine are nothing alike 😂 Completely different color choices and from what I can see very different techniques used. So I am not sure how this video is recreating it. But Elminiaturista is a fantastic painter and that Grey Seer looks awesome so I guess I take it as a compliment 🤣
