Whether you're family, a fellow adventurer or hobbyist, or just a curious observer who's stumbled upon my channel, I'm thrilled to share my experiences with you. Here you will find a chronicle of my personal journey mostly unedited, mostly for my family to watch. I'm a geek by day but grew up in the trades using my hands and love being outside. I play no video games, I have no simulators, just life and the experiences of doing things. No desire to be famous or an influencer as they call it these days, just recordings of things I find interesting or fun. If you're the negative type please keep your comments to yourself unless they are constructive. I reply to comments as I can and that isn't very often at all.
Every trip I take, every car I fix, and every shot I take, is an opportunity for me to learn and grow, and I hope my experiences can inspire you as well.
Remember, adventure is always out there! Let's leap into it together.
It's pretty steep...the angle can be seen as I pass my brother-in-law when the camera angle is level and not parallel to the hill as he aims the camera down to the bottom.
.458 win mag is an elephant gun dangerous game round. Good luck attempting to explain to an American Game Warden why you are using this rifle in North America.
The good news is that there is no reason to explain to anyone what caliber is used unless there is a minimum or rim fire rule...this is certainly NOT under the minimum. :-) Seriously though, this is a reloading experiment to try to make it into a subsonic "brush gun" shooting a super heavy and slow round that still has enough power to go thru brush with out deflection. We just haven't gotten around to it yet.
that too-light rifle can easily make you develop a flinch. If you're hunting in cold weather (heavy coat) then perhaps 10 pounds of rifle. if you're in a t-shirt then 12-13 pounds of rifle would be reasonable. You dont want it too light lest you detach a retina or damage a shoulder. And use that sling, it helps. Why injure yourself?
So true, heavy hitting rifles can and will develop a flinch if they hurt even if you don't think so (or are trying to be macho). I can't imagine how anyone shoots a 500 nitro or the such. The older I get the more I like muzzle brakes (even though I don't like being "that guy" at the range.
Glad we are only really playing with this caliber. Unfortunately we can't get trail boss any more so our crazy reloading idea for a "brush gun" has gone up in smoke. I'm sure we will keep it for fun and just build another .458 SOCOM brush rifle.
Only a very, very, few people use the 460 Weatherby Mag today - because there are better calibres to use. The 458 Win Mag is still a very common calibre in use around the world because it works - whereas the 460 Weatherby Mag has all but disappeared!! The 460 Weatherby Mag now exists primarily in the realms of cartridge collectors.
Great video. As dumb as it may sound doing those seals was the most dreaded thing left that I can think of that I needed to do on my Jeep still and that includes a rear end rebuild. The tool made it much easier than trying to beat them in with a socket, I strongly recommend it as you’re still saving way more than the $40 doing it yourself than if you paid a shop easily $100/hr to do it for you (unless you’re gifted at doing practical things like that but I struggle with them as I imagine I may have messed something up trying the socket method!)
Yea, I hate mud...so much cleaning, such a good chance of getting mud where it doesn't belong, and that doesn't include if you get stuck in it then you have to wade thru it to get out then get back in it to hook up a rope to pull it out...etc etc etc.
He is still loving it. First shot repeatability is pretty good on the carbon barrel. Haven't tried a long string of shots over heating it...but 3 shots no problem. (and if you need more than 3 you might need to practice more) :-)
Always happy to see another brother-in-christ! I encourage you to be diligent in the on-going work of sanctification (or being saved from the power of sin) because being saved from the penalty of sin is just the beginning. God has so much more for us.
Factory or reload ammunition? Also now that you moved it back to zero, how does it shoot when you moved it back… I’ve like to know if the tuner is repeatable? Thanks for posting.
In the process of converting a savage 110 270 into a 458 win mag with the shaw barrell, what stock did you end up using, and any tips on the build? Thanks!
This 458 has been a test bed and has used a Choate stock for the heavy loads, a wood stock, and a plastic stock. I'd stay away from the hollow plastic stocks with anything but the lightest loads. An accu-stock would be sufficent or most aftermarket stocks.
@flyingfrog2856 thanks! I just finished up the build I ended up using a hogue overmolded stock with the full aluminum bed block, only issue I'm having now is I can't get it to feed more than one round out of the mag box, do I need a different follower and mag box?
Felts your pain! And unfortunately the power(s) we wanted to try to download this with to make it a brush gun aren't being made any more so now we just have an elephant gun in a place with small deer. :-( Still it was fun to shoot and play with.
The red ring is actually just some ultra copper RTV sealant just in case the machine surfaces weren't perfect. (since I didn't use any machining at all...more like lamo dremel)
These tuners actually started out in the 22LR competition world and I've used one on a Bergera B-14R CARBON with great success shooting run of the mill ammo in 1/2 inch groups instead of only running expensive match ammo.
Bang for the buck and XJ is hard to beat FOR SURE! I've done some things I never though were possible in my XJ and have seen 30K+ rigs that couldn't do them.
Simple Tire dot com, and had them mounted locally. If I'd known they were going to work so dang good I would have probably went with the 9.5x16 instead! Good fun!
Excalibur carbon fiber at 26 inches long with a 1:9 twist. It was on a good sale and even though excalibur might not be a top tier blank to most people, upon really reading up it seems like they are just about as good as most with the exception that they might push their equipment a bit much and eventually produce some not great barrels. However they will replace it if it sucks. Lets hope it doesn't suck!
Nice looking rifle. Thumbs up for you. I have a 375HH SE and considering to buy a CZ550 458WM soon. It'll be my last collection of dangerous game rifle.
At least he knew he didn't have it and they put the cushions underneath him God bless the guy for putting the cushions My back hurt just seeing him fall God bless you for trying brother just keep on working keep on doing it visualize your body with less weight
Bouldering is a little scary even with the pads. Some guys will do that kind of slope 15 feet in the air! Being over 50 I'm going to be playing it a little more safe than that. If you want to continue to watch the journey I'm moving all the climbing adventures to another channel called RockTownKraig. I can't wait to loose more weight and gain more strength, should make for a lot of fun on the rocks.
Seems like I play Peter Pan more than I end up climbing! Eventually I'll get to the top wo/help. No matter what I still get to play Peter Pan on the way down. I'll remember that to troll the experienced climbers with next time I go!
