There's a couple of great performances of Hurel's masterpiece 'Traits' on RU-vid by other players but THESE two are the most engaging and most expressive, always squeezing the juice out of every direction on the page. I prefer the clip of them playing this in 2015 on that stage with the high wooden panels though. This one might be more proficient maybe (Alexandra in particular!) but I prefer the grit and edge of the other one.
Came here after hearing these two play this on BBC Radio 3's New Music Show 27th June. Possibly the most remarkable string writing and string playing I've ever come across. Genius composition. Genius performers. And this has less than 200 views, as I type this, after nearly two years of being uploaded. Shocking. Where IS everyone? Something else I want to say here. While I was studying composition more than twenty years ago I focussed primarily on contemporary music and learned from the academics from the department about 'this piece' and 'that piece' being a masterpiece, 'this composer' and 'that composer' being historically important....but really, I'd say THIS music here by Hurel 'speaks' from start to finish as well if not more effectively than any other modernist string writing over the last century. Yep I'm sticking my neck out. Truly stunning, this is. Deserves WAY more attention. Deserves to be recognised as a great work of the art music canon in fact.
