360Chestnut is a one-stop information resource tool for the consumer to figure out the optimum project they should do to their home from an energy efficiency and rebate/incentive perspective.

Once the consumer determines their top project(s), we then help them connect with a credited service provider who can actually do the work. We are in the process of building out our service provider network, and would love your participation as an approved service provider. We are very consumer focused. We want to help people understand what they should be doing to their homes and how to think of their home as a system.

Our goal at 360Chestnut is to create a more knowledgeable consumer base and connect them to knowledgeable contractors. We don't sell leads; rather, we facilitate relationships between the consumer and the appropriate contractors. We want a deep relationship with both sides of the equation.

When you replace a window like this, do you remove the storm window?

I just need to know how to get the springs back into the lock. They fell out when I soaked the lock in brush cleaner to remove the old paint.

If I had this style window, I'd be inclined to replace the sash cords with chains, which should have a longer lifespan.
@barryallenporter8127

Good sash cords will outlast you, chains simply aren’t worth the expense unless the sash is extremely heavy, which is their real shining feature, the load capacity

I live in an apartment, how on earth can I carefully clean these windows? They don’t pop out!
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 2 года назад
For single pane windows, they used to make a device with two big magnets and you put cleaning pads sandwiched on either side of the glass between the magnets, then slid the whole thing back and forth until the glass was clean. I don't know who sells them now.

my windows are very similar to these. one window wont stay open. the sash cord seems to just move up and down with the window and get bunched above it when lifted, like the weight isnt moving or something. is it possible to fix by myself?
@barryallenporter8127
@barryallenporter8127 2 года назад
Cord probably broke in the weight pocket. I know this is 2 years old but you can get to the weight pocket by pulling the casing, or if you’re lucky your jams have access doors.

I think most of the leading advice is to use a vapor barrier with insulation, even in retrofits. Not sure I can really trust one guy over everyone else without evidence to backup his claims.

Fuck these stupid windows. Every window is different and on most houses they have the original windows and its a god dam mystery how to get to the counterweight to fix the sash cord. People just didn't know how to make shit before the 1970s did they? They didn't know how to make it CORRECTLY so that it could be serviced in the future

After the stop is removed window will swing inside and you can clean it in place. The cord should have enough give. In Edinburgh I've seen lots with hinges that can support the window piece in this operation.

Thank you so much for the understanding, we used to have some problems like allergies due to bad air. We went for professional air testing company airtesting.com/ who helped us to check the indoor air quality with their kit easily and we get the online report. Thanks again for the enlightenment

great explanation of the window parts. its very clear you know your stuff and I'm impressed you actually do maintenance on windows that old. If you make another video you should make it of taking the window apart and some of the maintenance since you do a good job at identifying all the components. Not many people have windows that old so most of the you tube videos on replacing windows aren't as helpful. Nice job!

Some of the kits have an added step as to wear you use a hair dryer and shrink the plastic to fit. As well if they give you extra tape. Maybe insulate all the way around the window. I would think you would be able to utilize alot if not all of that excess if you allow it to travel up the window and better insulate from air gaps no matter how small. If you have it, use it.

Thanks for the info on rebates. Just wanted to add that there are a variety of instruments you can bring to a client's house to perform an indoor air quality test in place, so you do not necessarily have to take air samples and ship them out. However, tt may be cheaper to send them out if you are looking fo specific VOCs.
@kurtj92
@kurtj92 10 лет назад
I think it is important to point out that the house leakage rate is not a measure of indoor air quality. It is simply a test that approximates leakage. The assumption that a leaky house at or above .35 air changes per hour = good indoor air quality is highly flawed. Though in a house with forced hot or cold air, this might be accomplished at times, a house with no system to properly mix or distribute the outside air around the home would likely leave areas very poorly ventilated. And many very dangerous pollutants like radon are undetectable by our senses of smell or feel.
