The irony is, the higher up officers and some of the medical officers brought up that all submariners should have their appendix removed while the in training or before heading out on a war patrol. It was shot down by the main people in Washington as unnecessary. After several submariners ended up having appendicitis and needed them removed during patrol, the suggestion proved to have merit.

The use of old ships shows why it is imperative that the navy stop scrapping old ships that work fine. They should use them while new ones come in ,especially since many new ones have less firepower to save money

O'Kane lost his crew ...a reckless hothead with a "score to settle"(wahoo..captain mush morton)...at 2:11 a seaman complains that O'Kane lets a destroyer nearly run over the Tang so "he could get his shot". Show is good at showing the inner tickings of the sub although probably by mistake. Clark Gable in the movie "Run Silent, Run Deep" dramatizes as does this "silent service" episode.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, thank you Rear Admiral Dykers. I truly wish that this show had been given more of a following back when it was being produced, but it means alot to me now. It's sad that this show couldn't have been produced in color.

Thank you Admiral Dykers. I wish that your show could've continued on, as it very much deserved to, but it came at a time when our country would've liked to have forgotten our war, but little did they know then how much we would come to be intrigued by our Navy's wartime efforts nowadays.

Great American stories that weren't photographed, even in my day 1960's we didn't use cameras very often and I'd hardly ever see someone with a video camera, so these images are rare but exciting to see. God bless my relatives who fought in all our wars and God bless all who served 🇺🇸

I’m a retired Army Infantry NCO and like most Americans, my grandfather served during WWII and he was a pilot flying cargo planes over the hump. I’ve always considered the Submariners as the Navy version of the Infantry, it’s a critical job that nobody wants to volunteer for aside from a select few. If the Navy had fixed the damn torpedo detonators/fuses at the beginning of the war, there wouldn’t have been so many Japs on those islands in the first place.

I did oceanography study with marine labs on Friday Harbor. I scuba dive Hiro straights on vertical rock wall from nw lighthouse. Ive been diving that 600ft basalt rock wall when US submarine makes Southern turn to go South down Hiro straight with San Juan Island on one side an Vancouver Island on other. When submarine makes that S. Turn it usually sonars down straight. The sonars under water is loud an awesome. Seeing sub pass you, when you can see metal panels, is most awesome! I can understand why ocras sonar are messed with, when submarine uses they're sonar!

I live in Cleveland Ohio. The USS Cod is docked downtown in lake Erie right next to Burke Lakefront Airport. When I was a kid in the boy scouts I got to go inside the USS Cod. It is still in great condition. I know they fired the deck gun a couple years ago. Also a while ago they sailed the submarine to Erie PA for reconditioning of the hull. It is an awesome little boat. There is not much room insidr. I don't know how 80 to 90 men could be comfortable going out at sea for months of the time especially during wartime. I was very impressed by this old boat.
