One of my friends sent me a cocktail recipe for “s’mores”, using rootbeer, vodka and the marshmallow syrup. I can’t say it tastes exactly like a s’more, but it was still pretty good.
Fact is, your digital deliverables are often created by the lowest-paid people at the firm. Out of hundreds and hundreds of projects that I've taken in data for, I can count on one hand the times incoming data was ready-to-use. I am completely accustomed to (and plan for) recreating everything. The industry is a mess that has only gotten worse as more platforms and formats emerge.
Well… you’re not wrong. I always advise my clients to heavily modify their specs. The last one had the CAD Standards portion written at a college sophomore level. My boss was confused when that’s the first thing I told them to change. 7th grade max (for any public facing document, not just our industry). No paragraphs. Sentences and checklists only. My deliverables *did* get better, the more I simplified our documents, so I know it works. (Well, it helps.) So many are like, I’m awesome, you’re going to steal my blocks and designs! Uh, no. You know who is? Your outgoing employees. But they push back and say their intellectual property (a renovation of a hospital wing from the 1920’s? Suuure.) trumps our contract and specs, and the argument lasts so long, we just never get the docs before Finance closes the project out. It’s cool, I’ve already learned that the more people brag about their skills and drawing components, the worse they’ll be when I finally get them.
@@MissDorkness It's refreshing to hear someone speak the truth about the design and construction process. More often than not, I end up as the "unpopular opinion" regarding this. I'd also like to give a shout to your comments regarding project managers and origin points. More than once we've had to fight to have our verified, accurate, daily go-to info used at the outset of a project.
@@RetroCAD sad, but not surprised, to hear it. Whether it’s origin points or just continuing to use floor plans that they already know are incorrect (not just walls, but also structural columns or other fixed items). It’s not a communication thing, you tell them and tell them, and they’re like meh. They’ve got no skin in the game, it’ll get built and they’ll move on.
He was certainly right about the jokes having timed fuses.....'bout an hour after laughing during the video, my browser crashed, I called tech support, and needless to say, I wound up laughing too hard to hear Steve tell me he can't help.
Not only can you find Don at technicallyfunny dot com , you can also find his profile on MySpace! myspace dot com / donmcmillan I still have to buy his tape from his website. As I said, I've seen him twice and never laughed so hard.
