Hi, the model you're talking about is the earlier M1835 and M1840 Dreyse pistols. I have one of each too. But there were only built about 100-200 pieces of the M1865 pistol. If you want to buy one, you can search for it on gunsinternational. They are incredibly expensive. Dreyse constructed the M1865 for the prussian military as an officers sidearm. But it was abandoned by the military due to its high production costs.

Sehr interessanter Umbau.
@DrJacks
@DrJacks 2 месяца назад

@DrJacks
@DrJacks 7 месяцев назад
I use 11mm Chassepot bullets as can be found on eg**.de. Sizes: -11.5mm in diameter 26mm bullet length -380 grn But they fit better if they are calibrated to 11.46mm. 11mm Mauser bullets should also work well. But I have also had Chassepot rifles that required 56mm cardboard cases. Chamber bores were not as precise back then as they are today, hence the variations. I recommend determining the chamber length before building the paper cartridges. The length of the paper cartridges is correct if the bolt can be closed with light pressure.

Nice mid-18th century French fowler!! However, what is the bayonet doing stuck to the muzzle?
@DrJacks
@DrJacks 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your question. In the 18th century most of those guns were manufactured for noble men. They liked to pick up the shot game with the bayonet and of course used it to kill game when was not shot accurately. There also existed double barreled percussion war shotguns with bayonet for the first line. They were used by the so called voltigeurs in the Napoleonic wars.

I assume you shoot this chassepot? What method of construction are you using for the ammunition? I am experimenting with both paper and plastic 12mm straws, RWS musket primers and a thin rubber disk taped to the base, and a range of pure lead projectiles from .452 to .460 diameter.
@DrJacks
@DrJacks Год назад
I use 12mm paper straws expanded on both ends with a spiral drill atm. As primers I use CCI musket primers, filled wih BP and glued on a thin cardboard. Projectiles are the ones in original 11mm Chassepot size with 380 grs. In near future I will change to a kit which allows you to use metal cases with large pistol primers while still using the needle ignition. This means the needle ignition function is not changed and thus the ignition mode is not changed. So this will bring me some advantages, as you have no more issues with decentered bullets and a higher accuracy to achieve always same black powder load in all cartridges.

Just NO.. there are much better and less destructive methods of removing rust marks than taking a grindstone to it..
@DrJacks
@DrJacks Год назад
Yes, you are right, there are different methods for removing rust, electrolysis, steel wool, grindstone, steel brush, and vinegar, just to name a few. I decide in dependency on time effort, area of the rust/ corrosion pits, active rust or inactive rust, and the abrasive or nonabrasive method. Here I decided on the abrasive method, which is, besides other methods still state-of-the-art, to get rid of the rust colorization of the metal in this area to homogenize the appearance of the weapon as a whole. Most of the time I am still a friend of nonabrasive methods, still using the electrolysis bath, which is among the restorators at the national museum abandoned. Why? Because under a microscope you will find out, that the electrolysis changes the metal surface into a sponge-like condition which is far from the original condition. But I aim for bringing the guns back to a state, where they are able to be fired again while preserving them in the best possible collectors state not erasing but considering their age. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
