Great video! How did you like this loop compared to the Teton Crest? We did the Crest a couple years ago and loved it and has been contemplating the Winds vs. the Sawtooths for our next backpacking trip. What are your thoughts! Keep up the great content. Thanks!
Thank ya. I have a slight bias towards the Teton crest trail. Not by much but a little. They’re both AMAZING hikes. Believe it or not I found less people on the Teton trail than the cirque due to the permits limiting people and the camping areas are ever so slightly better. Funny you mention the sawtooth. I will be doing that in 7 weeks. Maybe I’ll see ya there.
Late July. Almost was as bad in Alaska when I lived there. Not quite but close. They were only bad in spots especially around the lakes. Just be prepared. Have nets. Bug spray alone may not be helpful enough. That or wait until late august or September.
Thank ya kindly. Means more coming from another content creator like yourself. Last several are good. Go way back and they get a little rough. Been trying to refine my channel and the camera work.
@@TheOutdoorGypsy I know the feeling! I'm embarrassed to watch my first ones (and occasionally even my recent ones)! It's part of the process, I try and remind myself. Glad to connect with you. Good luck and keep 'em coming.
Thanks so much for this video, it inspired me to go to this years ('24) backcountry weekend. Your takeaway of the trip at the end of the video was spot on!
Incredibly beautiful. Parts of the winds are EXTREMELY remote with crazy solitude. Others like this hike are quite crowded. But, if you’re willing to go to the lakes without the glitz and glamor you can still find relative solitude.
How long did it take you to hike this trail? We are coming from Texas. 18 years ago we started this trail and never finished it. About a mile into it I came across a mountain lion and was too scared to finished it so we went back down.
Wow that’s a great story. Scary I’m sure but not many see a mountain lion on trail. For me personally it took us about 3.5 hours. It’s very dependent on how fast you hike, your conditioning, and how much you stop along the way for wildflower/wildlife viewing. On the high end it shouldnt take you more than 5 hours.
I went there last year and was amazing!! I also made a video there of the various beauties of nature. Thanks for the history and dm anytime if question about redwood hikes. I just got back from Montgomery Woods S.N.R. and I consider it as beautiful as this hike.
Thanks for IDing the flowers! I've been using Newcomb's Guide for years. You? A few years ago the rangers warned us to hang our packs on a line between trees as the porcupines where terrible. We did that but I mistakenly left my cork handled trekking pole out and the porkies hammered the cork.
My pleasure. My curiosity has gotten the best of me over the years and I thought it’s time for me to ID them. I usually use a cool site called wildflowersearch.org. Can use it all over the states and at different elevation. More recently my iPhone can ID the flowers by looking at the details in the picture. I have to say it does an incredible job so far. Yeah the porcupines, like most animals I’m guessing go after the salt from sweat on the cork. Regardless I’m sure that wasn’t fun.
Great video. Can you tell me how to get to trailhead parking, length or trail to put on my AllTrails? And camping reservation or at trailhead? Thank you.
Here’s a link for the trail head where we started. maps.app.goo.gl/jZjdihEQNUGRUubg9?g_st=ic This will also take you to the ranger station. Talk with the rangers they will help a lot. Tell them what you’re looking to accomplish. Depending where you camp you will need reservations. For us on this trip and where we camped it’s considered the backcountry and you won’t need reservations. Reservations are only need for the popular camps close to the ranger station.
Great job on the video! I attempted this Memorial Day weekend of last year but had to abort at the Washington General Store on day 2. The temps were in the 90s and I had a 40+ lb pack on but my body just couldn't go any further at the time. I had literally lost 17 lbs of water weight on that trek and it was an eye-opener for sure. Needless to say, I will be back at it again here in a couple of months with attempt #2 running a much lighter pack and 40 lbs lighter myself here now as well.
Respect for knowing to quit. Some many don’t and get into deep trouble. I cant imagine doing this with 90 degrees. Especially east coast 90 degrees. Hopefully round 2 is s a success. Post a messge here when you complete it.
@@TheOutdoorGypsy - You bet and thank you! I completed the NH48 4Ks and I had never experienced such dehydration as I did on this one hike. So, it was pretty brutal but certainly not a technical hike by any stretch by comparison to the Whites. It is a pretty hike, nevertheless, and this was my first attempt at backpacking overnight VS a typical 15-20 miles day hike. I actually didn't show up at the first shelter in Stoddard behind Center Pond until 10:30pm that first night. I think that was about 23 miles in. Then, it was another 14 miles to the Washington Store where I ultimately threw in the towel. I think I would have stayed at the General Washington shelter right there but there was a couple of local guys hanging out having a few beers and I just didn't feel comfortable with it. So, I had my wife drive me home. I will let you know how I make out.
@@TheOutdoorGypsy Hi there. I just wanted to let you know that I DID complete the trail last weekend in 3 days NOBO. I stayed the first night at the Spiltoir Shelter, the second at the Fox Brook Tentsite and then I wrapped up about half the trail on Day 3 to the summit of Sunapee. It was a great hike for me.
I can see your perspective but beauty is also in the eye of the beholder. Some people might like those views better than north dome. I personally think they’re both gorgeous in their own right.
Totally agree! It's a beautiful hike and an astonishing sight to behold once arriving past the first treeline and clearing into the main clearing near the lake and river.
Like 58, Great impressive footage capturing the beautiful scenery as the awesome gift of the mother nature, thanks for sharing and bringing us to this wonderful relaxing place and stay safe always.
Indeed it was. So many people are afraid of bear. As someone who has spent many days and miles in the backcountry I’ve never once had a problem with a bear and I’ve had over a dozen encounters. Don’t let this deter you from such exquisite adventure. They are way more afraid of you than you realize (my pep talk 😊)
did a route similar to this we come in on the duckabush trail head. go over lacross, anderson and o`niel passes. stay at marmot lake and then drop down to big log camp and come out at staircase trail head about 50 ish miles over 5-6 days. we are planning to do this hike again in july or august! cant wait!
The Dungeness and Tubal Cain trailheads are so close to each other and you pass the former on the way to the latter, makes this an interesting open loop option if you have 2 vehicles. Leave one at the Royal Basin/Dungeness trailhead and continue to Tubal Cain. Head up Tubal Cain and stay wherever you want and then head out the Dungeness. Could even add an extra night or two and stay at Home Lake or Sunnybrook Meadows before heading out the Dungeness. You’d then have a vehicle waiting and a 10 minute drive to pick up the other one.
Love this. I have hiked all over Garden of the Gods in all seasons and it never gets old. From easy trails to the fun climbs. Early morning is definitely a better time to go if you don't like crowds. There are more challenging trails than what was shown here, and you can definitely get your heart rate up. If you really want a challenge, go to the Manitou Incline- It's a beast, but what an accomplishment. I took the Barr Trail down from it and enjoyed everything about it, except for my jelly legs at the end. :) Love this video. It makes me miss home....
I did a SOBO this year (September 7-11, 2023) finishing at the summit of Monadnock with a somber prayer for the lives lost on 9/11. The thunder Gods chased me the entire time. It was fantastic journey and your video brought back some fond memories. Thank you. Clam Chowdah...
💕. Soon. Very soon. I’ve been busy backpacking all over in Wyoming Massachusetts New Hampshire and Maine. Videos in the works. Hopefully have them rolling out in a couple weeks.
