Sharing our experiences from the trail! We talk about all the gear we use hiking, backpacking, and camping as well as lessons learned. We share information on everything from day hikes in the northeast including the Adirondacks, Vermont, and New Hampshire to long distance thru hikes like the Northville Placid Trail, Long Trail, and someday the Appalachian Trail.
I've started working towards the 50 highest points of each US state. I've gotten a few here and there but I'm realizing after just Mt Mansfield, VT that might require a lot more training than I thought.
I’ve snowboarded Cannon it’s amazing for that. We love Franconia Notch state park also, but we’re starting our summit hiking in Crawford Notch with Mt Washington and a few other summits in the area. Washington has been a bucket list peak for me for 15 years. We definitely intend to thoroughly explore Franconia Notch though.
What do you think about hiking ridges to get to multiple peaks? Does it count if you didn’t technically hike up and down for each peak? We live in CT and just did a loop where we submitted Round Mountain, Mount Frissell, and Brace Mountain together. The first two were legitimate ascents but for Brace we hit the summit from a connecting trail and then went down the trail that would have ascended the whole peak. Does it count??
Great video. In 1968 I took about 5 older boys from the camp we were from across the upper Great Range. We did Gothics, Saddleback ,Basin, Haystack, then down the Phelps trail. 20 miles total. Dark when we reached Garden parking lot. No Marcy but we had all had climbed it. I climbed Marcy 6 times, always from Avalanche lake, Feldspar, Lake Tear and 4 corners loop. I had no idea about the Saddleback Cliffs so when we got there after Gothics and Saddleback summit, we just descended them. Pretty cool. Crystal clear sky, 70 degrees. One of the great days of my life. I can say I climbed in the Great Range. I was always blessed with great weather on hikes. I climbed 16 of the 46 and many several times as well ass smaller ones and don't remember one day that was not clear.
The John Brooks Lodge was the finish line of my 21 hour hike which started at the Calamity Brook Trail and ended up with 4 High Peaks(Redfield”who was the intended and primary target” Gray Peak”who was just a bonus” Skylight”who was 1 of my 2 secondary targets” and Haystack”who was 1 of my 2 secondary targets”) being added into the list of High Peaks that I’ve done and after waking up from my 21 hour hike I did the Wolfjaws which were the 12th and 13th High Peaks of the 15 High Peaks that I’ve done
@@kevinvesuviusevilmowgli Did that take you through the Gorge to Haystack from 4 corners or is there another way? I think that's the only way from Skylight
@@kevinvesuviusevilmowgli Thanks. Saw some signs on video but never went there. Used to be lean tos at 4 corners and Lake Tear back in the day. maybe 5 cars in the parking lot at the Loj at most
Cold Brook Pass saw a lot of damage from Hurricane Irene. The pass has not been very well maintained since. You missed a rugged but, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful trails from the turn off down to Indian Pass. Definitely a tough hike but the waterfalls and pools are beautiful. Scott Clearing is really pretty too.
Dear Pam and Kevin, love your coverage, that plane was my father's - N6483R a Piper Cherokee 140. Aug 10, 2014 a group of us went up there on the 45th anniversary of his rescue. You noticed how one wing was not with the plane, it sheared off on a larger tree as he went in and the plane spun it was a miracle he survived.. He would fly up on weekends from Long Island to get to our camp in Tupper Lake. Pete (my dad ) is no longer with us but that was one of the most momentous events of my young life. There were no beacons required on the planes then, my dad went on to lobby with the Civil Air Patrol who found him to make them mandatory. Happy hiking, all the best
Nice video - heading there in a few weeks! I'm still a little confused about the bunkrooms; they refer to them as up and downstream... are they separate detached buildings?
Looking at the Adirondaks for my next trip. How many miles did you hike total that day? And how many were between each mountian from the start? Are trails and junctions well marked to know where you're going?
Total trip is around 20. Haystack is about 7 or 8 in. The other two are pretty close. Try to squeeze in Gothics. I went Gothics, Saddleback, down SB cliffs to Basin, back down Basin to Haystack, Haystack to Phelps trail back to Garden parking lot. Start early, very early (5-6 AM). Pick a really nice day. Don't waste the climbs on no or lousy views.
Algonquin is my favorite mountain with a spectacular view. Giant holds a special place in my heart. I was the first counselor from my summer camp to lead a trip up Giant. We went via the Ridge. Years later I went with a group via Roaring Brook Trail. Years after that I went to Roaring Brook Falls but no time to climb Giant. I found a rock about the size of a baseball nestled right in the heart of a fallen tree. Must have been there hundreds if not thousands of years. Tree grew around it. I took it home. I still have it. Climb Noonmark. Phenomenal views, especially of Giant, Range and Dix range. A real little bear of a hike. Wish I had climbed Dix. Did Cascade and Porter many times.
Great video! Really like how you told the story behind the crash and everything. It's quite the site to see. Definitely one of the cooler hikes in the high peaks in my opinion especially when taking Avalanche Pass route instead of upper works. Happy hiking 🥾⛰
Hey Julius! So beautiful! No visits from the Martin this time! We were looking for them though, our friend mentioned that they were up there. What a treat that would have been 😁
