yup you lose a bit, but use your Dremel and a thin disk, and cut a slit from top to bottom, a lot quicker and easier.

Back then, they really tried their hardest to make sterling silver items with as LITTLE silver as they possibly can. And that's what makes this stuff annoying at times. 😅

Thanks for the interesting video! Your results jive pretty closely to what I have found. I've found that most weighted candlesticks and salt/pepper shakers tend to run close to 10% sterling by weight - with average foil thickness around .003 inches (3 mils). Some modern ones I have found to be less robustly made though - with recovery closer to 5%. I'll usually offer around 4% of the gross weight x .925 (for sterling silver content) x spot silver price. If I'm in a situation where I can't comfortably pull out a gram scale (like a thrift store or antique mall), I'll pay something like $20 for a medium size set of candlesticks, or $8-$10 for a pair of shakers. Sterling flatware or hollow-ware I just have to heft and estimate a value. It's almost shocking how much silver is in a simple sterling dinner fork!

This cover for the Shadow of the Dragon Queen is the "second" alternate cover that is exclusive to the box set. So technically there are three covers for the SotDQ. The base cover, the foil cover and the Lord Soth alternate cover.

Sadly, when I needed money I sold a huge amount of my Judges Guild stuff. Most of the modules were still sealed and all but a few of the magazines, including my Dragon magazines, got sold too.

I own a precious metals buying store and have always been told that there's about 10% of sterling on weighted items. This proves that there's actually a little more than 10%. Thank you.

This was pretty informative. I have two sets that I’m getting ready to sell and I looked at the seal on the bottom for the name Duchin and it has a hand with the name. Your salt and pepper shakers didn’t have the hand in the name in the middle, It was just the name around the edge. Probably knock offs. I hope I have better luck with my two sets. Thank you for the video, and again it was very informative.

Hey just wanted to share info. I find sterling frames from time to time. Most commonly they are Italian or English have found a few more modern ones that were Greek. Don’t know the exact condition of the ones you had but I have sold these honestly mostly on eBay. Sold at least six or seven some as high as $200. That was a Carr frame from England. They still make them they go for 400 pounds which I think is like 450-500 us. I never have the fortitude to scrap so I try to keep intact. I even sold kind of a plain silver frame with dents think it was a 4x6 or 5x7 for about $70 plus shipping. They especially like Italian ones with a wood back. I am not sure what state you are in but I have found these at thrift stores none in the past month or two but I have found at least two dozen over say the past two years. Usually they are only marked a dollar or two because with the tarnish they look pretty bad. At any rate next time you come across one give it a try on eBay. Usually they don’t have as much silver as the big one you found so I think you might do better than scrapping on the lighter ones. At any rate good luck and happy hunting.

Ended up keeping a few of the nicer ones, but a couple were too far gone for Ebay. That being said the point of this series is to show what is in them if scrapped, and that often it makes more sense to sell them. However, if it doesn't sell after a while, into the scrap pile it goes.

The coins from Venezuela are .835 which are marked on the coins. The British India coins are as follows, the one with King George 5th would have a date from 1912-1936 and is .917 silver. The 1939 coin has King George 6th. That coin was minted in both .917 & .500 silver. The .500 coin has a different rim than the .917 coin.
@TheDragonsTrove
@TheDragonsTrove 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the info. I had figured out the Venezuela ones pretty easily, but didn't know about the two British India differences. Since it's more about the item, and less about the coin in this case, hopefully it won't matter to the eventual buyer.

I can't for the life of me sell any of my sterling as replacements even when they look like they've never been used. And I am only asking $1/gram. I end up having to scrap them. No one buys sterling cutlery in Canada.
@TheDragonsTrove
@TheDragonsTrove 9 месяцев назад
I tend to agree. I have had a couple patterns that do really well. But beyond those scrap seems to be the way once you factor in eBay fees. Selling online doesn’t make much sense to me. YMMV.

Thanks for the history lesson! Is lion rampant still in existence? I only ask because we have a game distributor up here in Canada with that name. Was wondering if they were related or connected in any way.

I don’t believe they were related. I am familiar with the Canadian outfit and to my knowledge there was no cross ownership.

There has to be a way to separate the blade from the handle and clean out the handle without damaging the silver handle. I've seen the cutest bell pendants made from the end of a sterling knife handle.
@Macky1101
@Macky1101 9 месяцев назад
To separate the handle from the blade, you heat the the joint with a blowtorch. Then you have to ream out the cement material inside the knife handle.
