I’m Elizabeth and I've been a design educator for 10 years! I grew up during the Neopets-era of the internet designing graphics and websites for fun. (Marquees were all the rage.) I never thought that my love for creating silly graphics with MS Paint could become a career. When it was time for college, I decided to study computer science at UC Berkeley. (Go bears 🐻!) At the time, there wasn’t an official design program or specialty. Fortunately, I found a community of design-loving students on campus who were passionate about teaching and learning from each other.

After I graduated, I worked as a product designer for a few companies in education including Khan Academy and Primer. I learned a lot about the education system, read bell hooks for the 1st time, and designed tools for both teachers and students.

In 2023, I decided to leave my full-time design role to pursue teaching full-time. I missed teaching and felt like I had something unique to say!

How should one approach NDA projects? Is there no possible way to put an NDA project on my portfolio?
@katisotabe
@katisotabe 2 месяца назад
Great question 🙋🏾‍♂️
@lalizlabeth
@lalizlabeth 2 месяца назад
i've seen many people share NDA projects before! this is taken directly from my portfolio guide (templatesbyliz.com/portfolio): If possible, share a 2-3 sentence vague description that includes the company, scope, and scale of the project. Include the project on your portfolio and put “Under NDA. Case study upon request” under the case study. For most companies, you’ll typically be allowed to share your NDA work in a presentation setting. They just don’t want your projects publicly available online. If you’re worried, double check with your manager. If you only have NDA projects, I recommend doing 1-2 side projects, so that you have public work available on your portfolio.

what questions do you have about product design portfolios?
@caseinpointsize
@caseinpointsize 2 месяца назад
Could a give a few more examples of side projects for a product design portfolio? I do UX on the marketing side. So just the main and child sites. Occasionally feels more like web design even thought I do my best go work through the UX process when I can. If I would like to make a transition to product. Other than more certification/classes. What are some additional ways I could try and add such work to my portfolio? Thanks!
@lalizlabeth
@lalizlabeth 2 месяца назад
@@caseinpointsize i don't like giving specific examples for projects because part of the product design process is figuring out what projects to do! product designers should be able to (1) identify a problem and (2) find a solution by using the design process. you can consider doing passion projects and creating work for friends or family!
@caseinpointsize
@caseinpointsize 2 месяца назад
@@lalizlabeth Perfect thank you! I always hear at this stage (3years) it should be real world projects only. I do my best to go through the UX process with my current projects and find problems to solves within the “redesign” request. Just wasn’t sure if that would be enough. I like the idea of reaching out and trying something new. Even if that’s one “concept” project. Thanks!!!

Hi @lalizlabeth ! First so glad I found your channel! Super helpful as I'm current rebuilding my own portfolio. As to constraints, no NDAs but more along the lines of: - Time (3 days, 2 weeks) presenting abbreviated ux process - Having strong concepts and reasoning behind design decisions but always end up building "lowest hanging fruit" version (mainly color, icons imagery updates / only shifting components up or down on the page) despite it not being the "best" solution - lack of data, lack of content/story/requirements (so some ambiguous designing) - and as above, no tracking to receive any data, after a project is complete to judge impact or know what to improve next In short, how can you showcase your abilities and knowledge in the ux process and visual design (especially as a "former graphic designer") due to the limits you have to work within.

Hey Eliza, Don't get me wrong, but I follow your Instagram, and I love how transparent and insightful you are about design there. It just seems like here you're agreeing with him more because he's your friend or maybe you don't want to come off as rude. I know he tried his best as a PM to design the site his way, but I feel like you could be a bit more honest with him. You've been studying people and design for so many years, and your experience is so valuable. I think you should use that to guide him better. There are many mistakes that are quite evident from the start, and I’m sure if he wasn't your friend, you’d be more straightforward. I have seen and know your potential and knowledge on Instagram reels that why I am saying this

Tip for when you're designing any type of list like this-just immediately go ahead and turn that first one into a component then duplicate it for the rest of your list. Makes iterating different styles for the list items way faster, e.g., you wouldn't have to select the element in each list item to move around, etc. 👍
@lalizlabeth
@lalizlabeth 6 месяцев назад
Yes, I am aware of how to do that!!! I purposely did not create components because it's better to see your process if you do not create components. I find that components can hinder the design process if you create them too early.
@b_urkert
@b_urkert 6 месяцев назад
@@lalizlabeth Right, I wouldn't necessarily define them as proper components, just would do it as temporary components to speed iteration up-I generally use temp components a lot of times for speed and then make proper components later. Either way works though!
