Please bear with me if you have this in one of the latter videos, im just beginning to watch, in freecad is there a way to use a model as the base for your sketch? As in "grabbing" the geometries from the model into the new sketch? Or do i have to draw it as needed? Much appreciated for your time to make these!
I am working in 0.21 version butI am not able to empty or pad the logo´s sketch because of the following error "result has multiple solids, that is not currently supported" . How did you do it? I can clearly see that your sketch is comprised by 4 figures but in your case it was possible to pad/empty.
Thanks for the nice tutorial. For practice puposes I basically duplicated this model of yours. It all works well except that when I export model to ".stl" file and view it in 3D-Printer preview, the model doesn't show all the features -especially the "Filiets" and "Champfers". I made sure that all items were selected via "Edit" -- "Select all" option but it doesn't seem to work. What else could I be missing? any comment/advice would be welcome. Thanks
Good to see you. I wish the value showed closer to the object being measured. For Example: If I am measuring something vertical or horizontal to the plane at a distance that is off of the screen, I have to zoom out and scroll to find the value should I want to see, change or delete it. The value seems to be designed to go half way between the two points. If the value was designed to show close to the point being measured it would be easier and quicker to see, change or delete. Perhaps a feature that when one hovers over or clicks on the measurement line the edit box is available.
im using FreeCAD 1.0.0RC2 and all whats shown in this video is still working. if you want Edit Placement of a part be shure you select the part for example the Clip inside the Assembly tree and not the Clip or the Rectangle outside. thanks for the nice tutorials!
@MangoJellySolutions Thanks for the great work on your tutorials. I abandoned Freecad after trying 0.1 and later revisiting 0.2 as I find the user interface just too confusing. At the time I was working on SolidWorks and Fusion 360 and just couldn't afford the time to figure it out without proper documentation and tutorials. When I had some time on hand recently I stumbled on your channel and found your videos very informative and helpful. When I saw this video I really wanted to work through it and with RC1 now available, I gave it a go. As I wanted to try everything in your tutorial, I also followed your "mistake" to place the sketch too high and then copy it lower using the sketcher copy command. This is where it became interesting as the copy command was not available, so I saved the file and opened it with 0.21 and the command was there. So it would be interesting to know if they left it out in RC1 and if so, if there is another way to do the same operation. Of course it's better to do the job correctly rather then fixing your mistakes later, but we all know that's a dream 🤪. Another interesting thing I picked up is that the arrays didn't immediately populate and that sent me down a rabbit hole trying to fix something that wasn't wrong, only to find that it only populated after changing the number of items in the array. this was the same for both versions, which I tried on Ubuntu that I run on en external USB hard drive. The reason for that is that I'm currently still running everything on Win 11 Pro and until I'm happy that I can run my little business entirely on Ubuntu with open source software without glitches, I still need to have my computer intact. I therefore suspect that there may be performance issues that cause the problems I experienced, so I'll also revisit RC1 on my Windows computer to ensure it's not related to the environment and possibly driver issues. In the meantime, thanks for your excellent videos and please keep up the great work. Lastly, your videos opened up Freecad as a real potential replacement for some of the work I do and the add-ons are very good especially this one as it saves a massive amount of time on the bulkheads when you design boats, which interestingly is a hobby of mine and hopefully I can still design a nice yacht before I die. After doing some searching, I found that I could change the preference in the Mesh Workbench making the paragraph that follows in brackets a non-existent issue (One other shortcoming I found is the quality if the STL and OBJ files that I export. With the other software I use, I can change the detail and quality when I save the files whereas with Freecad I noticed the round surfaces have flat areas. This means I have to smooth it in Blender before 3d printing which is a lot of extra work and not accurate. I noticed there's a third-party add-on that claims to rectify this, so I'll give it a try. Issue solved) Other than that, I'm really impressed what the team have achieved with this project and hope to soon say goodbye to Windows and the rest of the overpriced software offerings that don't allow small businesses opportunities to start off without borrowing money to get up and going. Once I make money, I would like to use all my subscription money to fund open source and channels like yours to change the world we live in. I am now committed to do at least some projects in FreeCad and as time progresses, I hope that I can change over completely.
These beginner videos are SO GREAT, thank you! I do wish you'd explain a few things, though: What the hell does "Inertial CS" mean, and why would making that arc in the sketch tangent to the other one you pulled in as an external geometry "cause problems," as you said?
Thank you for this excellent video. I followed the instructions in the video with the exact dimensions and slightly modified dimensions. I want to use this approach for future object with different dimensions. I'm wondering, would it be possible to have the dimensions of the new container parametrized in a spreadsheet and make it more customizable? Should in this case "all' constraints be defined in the spreadsheet (including helix properties, etc)? Thanks for answering.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes that is totally possible. Some of the dimensions you could derive from formula in the sketch itself if you don't want everything in the spreadsheet. This would probably be ones like percentage increased if you wanted thicker walls for larger containers or turns on the helix depending on height of lip. The height of the lid could even be a percentage of the body. Personally if you have it all in the spreadsheet then your design intent is all in one place so easier to follow. In my collection you will find a video for 'Config tables' if you want to take your spreadsheet to the next level and control the individual sets of configs by a drop down selection.
I am struggling with a project that I’m working on. It’s probably really simple but I had a brain injury which has messed up my thinking process. All it is, is a cylinder with 2 radial grooves revolved around it & so that I can adjust it, the radius’ & total thickness need to be link & I can’t get my head around it for the life of me! Any pointers? 🙏🏻🙏🏻
So you can now select which edges you want to extrude. What happens if you go back and slightly change that sketch to, for example, split an edge into two ? Will it recognise it as being the same sub sketch ? I assume not, but this wasn't covered.
Also very important and with big improvement after: Change the background color to light gray for example! I really don't understand why the FreeCad devs use these gradient colors! Very low contrast and even not consistent!
when we have huge imported parts (step/iges > 50mb), A2Plus updates the assembly very slowly. BTW., did you know A2plus can also constrain linked imported part?

No problems at all, I know how it feels, I have 3 pairs of glasses, one normal, one reading and one screen. I had a accident when I thought I was indestructible in my early 20's that left me blind in one eye and I had to have a intraocular lens to replace my natural one. I ended up extremely long sighted in one eye whilst being short sighted in the other. I have to use one pair of glasses to find the other lol.
Huge appreciation to the entire FreeCAD development team. With the advent of the long awaited version 1.0, it would be very useful if someone would make a series of FreeCAD video tutorials. There are many tutorials on RU-vid but the FreeCAD user interface has changed so much prior to 1.0 that they now serve only to confuse new users.
Yes it's a great improvement. Oh BTW, my 0.22 / v1.0 is probably what you are looking for. The weekly build though 0.22 they are version 1. I need to update the earlier ones (the first few videos) as I started it before the UI freeze. They then merged the coincident and on object constraint into one constraint and change the colour of the part icons. So just need to update a couple of videos and change the livery on the thumbnails.

Re-reading my previous post, I realized that I didn't express appropriate appreciation. Your FreeCAD videos are among the best and have helped me greatly. Thank you :). Downward compatible to 0.22 I would say very likely as they are the same. Beyond that it depends in what you are using in 1.0. There are know tools and constraints so your going to hit problems with backwards compatibility.
Thank you!! This has been a thorn in my side since I started using FreeCAD (3 months ago). The other thing that annoys me are the FreeCAD color choices. White cross hairs on various shades of white backgrounds and lines are really hard to see. Maybe 40 years ago, I could have seen them easily, but today, my eyes don't easily distinguish between different shades of the same color. I've changed several colors already, but that didn't help with the size of things. You just helped with the size of things.
I know this would be super simple for you and probably take you 10 seconds. lol But I'm trying to make a tapered piston ring compressor in free CAD. I'm not sure how to do the top tapered section to connect to the bottom section. Is there anyway you could do a quick video on it? Thanks!
I am trying to picture your design. Are you creating something similar to the ones that has a relief cut and a hose clamp that sits inside a groove running around the outside? Or are these the standard funnel type?
@@MangoJellySolutions Solid piece. Tapering from like 3.5" to 3" with the bottom 3" section being about 1.5" tall. So, basically funneling a 3.5" into a 3" cylinder 1.5" tall. Once I figure out the design, I can just scale it to whatever size I need. Basically need a tapered cone that's like 2 mm at the top tip, then down wider at the base at about 8 mm. And round of course. Make any sense? I made one, but I just kept doing filets, to smooth out the taper, and didn't work well.
So by the sounds of what you need you want 3 sketches on the XY plane. Each contains a single circle with your dimension that you need. 3.5", 3" and another 3" which is spaced along the Z axis 1.5" away from the other. 3.5" is spaced at a distance away from first 3" that you can decide. Then loft between all 3, but the trick is to set the loft to ruled so you don't get a curve surface but a tapered 3.5" to 3" and then it will be a cylinder as it ends with another 3". Once that's working and If you want to go a step further it can be hooked up to a spreadsheet so you could alter the dimensions in the spreadsheet to adjust for different bores and heights for other engines. I think that could do the job? I explained it here as it will take me a little time to get round to doing a video so gives you a head start.

Hi Darren. Great vid! Is it possible to change color of dimension and dimension lines. The red against a dark background (which I like) is very hard to read. Yellow would be preferable. Thanks for all the info
It seems I never usually take the time to change these. But you have again read my mind. I also changed my resolution in RU-vid to AUTO(1080pHD) which made a tremendous difference! Tlhanks B.E. G_Dub
good tutorial! im wondering if there is a way to transfer these settings between versions? id like to try the pre release and retain the sketcher settings from 0.22 dev...
Dev should pick up your current settings when you install it and run it the first time if you then change any of them and save them it should save just for it's own use if it was written correctly anyway😉

how about multiple solid problem when we do multiplication using "linear pattern, mirror, polar pattern, multi transform" tools? Do you have any workaround to avoid it?
