I'm Keith Little, a non-denominational evangelical convert to Catholicism. I create podcasts about the Catholic faith geared towards helping non-Catholics and new Catholics understand Catholicism-but all Catholics can learn something here. On the podcast, I try to find influential Catholic thinkers to talk about Catholic topics from the heart of the Catholic Church.

Brothers in Christ! Glory to Jesus Christ! This discussion was so transformative and full of wisdom from the Holy Spirit. The high point to me was seeing the verse "faith without works in dead" in this light of the works God calls us to being transformative in our lives. Of course God is a wise and loving parent who knows we must replace our sin with the sacramental life and service to others. I am once again thanking God for leading me home to the Catholic faith. No words can express what a treasure it is.❤

So, baptism now saves you, huh? For exactly how long does it save you? If an adult gets baptized as a Catholic and apostatizes 5 minutes later, it saves him (or her) for all of five minutes. If a baby gets baptized, it saves him (or her) until they are capable of committing a mortal sin. So, maybe for a few years, I guess. But the fact of the matter is that, in order to stay in a State of Grace, a Catholic must dutifully make use of the Sacraments and perform good works (since the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love were infused into them at baptism). A formed faith basically requires you to do these works to maintain your salvation. Which you then do, with the assistance of grace. Is this a works-based salvation? It’s hard to tell. Is the cooperation (with which one cooperates with cooperative grace) also completely of grace? Does it flow from grace-accomplished transformation of your soul at regeneration? Does it flow from a new heart? Are you a new creation in Christ? If that is all true, then you embrace a grace-based salvation. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you also embrace Sola Fide: Justification by Faith Alone…which is really nothing more than the belief in a grace-based salvation.

Well done! We see in the vehement, occasionally irrational opposition to both men, that they proclaim the full truth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I note that, by definition, Protestantism does not offer sacrifice. This tends to place Christ in the distant past, while on the other hand they demand that we have a "personal relationship" with Him. How? A thought process? A huge problem is that since the Protestant dissolution and fracturing, they are impossible to define. As well, sacrifice is historical - and biblical - worship. Since they do not sacrifice, they do not worship. They praise - which is excellent, but God is due infinitely more. He demands, commands and expects more. They are victims of their own theology. Their "services" can elevate human activities into "worship." Fellowship is the goal, once one is "saved." That is a horizontal relationship, rather than vertical. God first, the vertical. Your neighbor next, the horizontal. Since they have no devotions, any and all devotions MUST BE idol worship. But, look at how they ascribe divine qualities to the bible. Very close to idolatry, while they accuse both Catholics and Orthodox of idolatry. In truth, many seem to love the bible because it allows God to agree with them. I often throw my hands up and say "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Of course you don't have time for that. Everything is still the same. As far as doctrines the modern church is nothing like the early church. That's a FACT! I have quotes from church fathers that prove that not everything is the same from the beginning. Yes, fathers like Aquinas, Ambrose, Clement and even some popes. However, you apologists bury those. Why? It destroys the modern narrative.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. (Gospel of LUKE 1.26-31)

52:53 Mary is the mother of God is Biblical. "How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to visit me?" God was made flesh. His method for doing this required a mother. God has a mother as God was born of flesh. Some people reject this as they consider a mother to be a creator, but mothers do not create life, only God can do that. The other erroneous objection is attempting to slice Jesus into two halves, His divine half-God, and his fleshly half- Human. But Jesus is not half of one and half of the other but is both. This halves belief is an old heresy. You cannot say Mary is the mother of Jesus human half. "The _Word_ became flesh".

Protestant response. I beg to differ. Initially NONE of the earliest churches (ie local congregation) including the one at Rome had a mono-episcopate (ruled by a single bishop). All local churches at first were ruled by a plurality of elders (bishop/Elder/pastor referred to the same office). Ignatius (writing around 107-117 AD, ?) provides the first evidence of the development of local churches ruled by a single bishop and even then it was not a universal practice. It was later still that the Bishop’s authority extended beyond a local church or congregation and included authority over several local churches or congregations. Even later still did the concept of a diocese develop. Your assertion about single bishop rule from the very beginning is simply wrong. There is also zero evidence that the Apostle Peter ever served as the pastor of the local Christian congregation in Rome. Especially given that Christ called him to be an apostle not part of the clergy in a local church. I also question your assertion that the church at Rome held a position of preeminence from the. very beginning or that it even thought of itself at least initially as having sovereign authority over all Christians everywhere . That is an historical development not a mandate from God. If there was a paradigm shift it was when the bishops of Rome claimed sovereign rule over all churches everywhere. That was unknown in the primitive church.
@mooretristan719
@mooretristan719 2 дня назад
So Ignatius was taught by John, which means that there was a monoepiscopacy apparently universally enough that Ignatius is willing to say that if you aren't united to a single bishop, you don't have a church, within 20 years of John's death. Are we really saying that the church went off the rails in the East like this while John was still warm in his grave? As for the primacy of Rome, how do you account for Clement writing to Corinth to settle an internal dispute within a separate diocese? That sure sounds like the beginning of preeminent jurisdiction? Or Irenaus saying that all churches must agree with the Roman church to be orthodox?

@@mooretristan719 If we read Ignatius on his own terms, in his own setting, without anachronistically reading back into his words ninth- or thirteenth-century Roman Catholic ideas, the picture is rather different. In Ephesians 2:2, 4:1, Magnesians 2:1, and 6:1, among other places, Ignatius appealed to these three offices as roughly correlated. He had a high view of the episcopal office, the pastoral office in his scheme (and in Paul’s?) but not a hierarchical view. In Smyrnaeans 8:1 that high view of the episcopal office is on view: “Flee from divisions, as the beginning of evils. You must all follow the episkopos, as Jesus Christ followed the Father, and follow the presbytery as you would the apostles; respect the deacons as the commandment of God. Let no one do anything that has to do with the church without the episkopos. Only that Eucharist which is under the authority of the bishop (or whomever he himself designates) is to be considered valid (rev. from Michael William Holmes, The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, Updated ed. (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 1999), Defenders of a monepiscopal polity (e.g., Romanists) might wish to seize on the first part of v.1 but keep reading. Christians are to follow the episkopos, which I argue is better understood here as pastor than “bishop,” as it is usually translated. It is almost impossible for us to read or hear the word bishop without loading it with notions that do not yet exist. The pastoral office here is something like that conveyed in the Dutch word Dominee (Dominie). A Dominie is a pastor, perhaps a strong pastor, but he is not a regional governor of church nor the source of the church. We are to follow the pastor and the elders. We are to respect the deacons. We are to avoid a church without a pastor and we are to receive the Supper, the eucharist, from the pastor. Agree or disagree with him, Ignatius had a high view of the visible church. As a Protestant, when properly understood, I have no problem with Ignatius. We are admonished to be subject to the rule of our pastors. I certainly reject any idea that he was referring to the contemporary Roman Catholic Church (which did not yet exist). Ignatius makes absolutely no reference to a Pope.

@@mooretristan719 Eamon Duffy is Professor of the History of Christianity, and Fellow and Director of Studies, Magdalene College, University of Cambridge. He is author of several significant works of church history including The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England 1400-1570 (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1992) and Saints and Sinners: A History of the Popes (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1997). In the latter volume, discussing the origina of the Papacy he writes: Irenaeus thought that the Church had been ‘founded and organised at Rome by the two glorious Apostles, Peter and Paul,’ and that its faith had been reliably passed down to posterity by an unbroken succession of bishops, the first of them chosen and consecrated by the Apostles themselves. He named the bishops who had succeeded the Apostles, in the process providing us with the earliest surviving list of the popes - Linus, Anacletus, Clement, Evaristus, Alexander, Sixtus, and so on down to Irenaeus’ contemporary and friend Eleutherius, Bishop of Rome from AD 174 to 189. All the essential claims of the modern mpapacy, it might seem, are contained in this Gospel saying about the Rock, and in Irenaeus’ account of the apostolic pedigree of the early bishops of Rome. Yet matters are not so simple. The popes trace their commission from Christ through Peter, yet for Irenaeus the authority of the Church at Rome came from its foundation by two Apostles, not one, Peter and Paul, not Peter alone. The tradition that Peter and Paul had been put to death at the hands of Nero in Rome about the year ad 64 was universally accepted in the second century, and by the end of that century pilgrims to Rome were being shown the ‘trophies’ of the Apostles, their tombs or cenotaphs, Peter’s on the Vatical Hill, and Paul’s on the Via Ostiensis, outside the walls on the road to the coast. Yet on all of this the New Testament is silent. Later legend would fill out the details of Peter’s life and death in Rome - his struggles with the magician and father of heresy, Simon Magus, his miracles, his attempted escape from persecutionin Rome, a flight from which he was turned back by a reproachful vision by Christ (the ‘Quo Vadis’ legend), and finally his crucifixion upside down in the Vatican Circus at the time of the Emperor Nero. These stories were to be accepted as sober history by some of the greatest minds of the early Church - Origen, Ambrose, Augustine. But they are pious romance, not history, and the fact is that we have no reliable accounts either of Peter’s later life or the manner or place of his death. Neither Peter nor Paul founded the Church at Rome, for there were Christians in the city before either of the Apostles set foot there. Nor can we assume, as Irenaeus did, that the Apostles established there a succession of bishops to carry on their work in the city, for all the indications are that there was no single bishop at Rome for almost a century after the deaths of the Apostles. In fact, wherever we turn, the solid outlines of the Petrine succession at Rome seem to blur and dissolve. (Saints and Sinners, pg 2.)

Many people today have no idea how many different writings were floating around in the 1st century or two of Church history (though modern headlines about "lost gospels" help somewhat) and how long it took to compile all 23 NT writings into one collection. Not to mention that fact that scrolls/codices were not commonly owned and most people were illiterate. The notion one could just "pick up one's Bible" (and know the canon) and decide for oneself which sect was telling the truth about everything, comparing it to Scripture was totally foreign. The Bereans were not commendable because they checked some apostolic preaching against the Old Testament but because they were open to the apostolic message/authority, unlike other violent Jewish communities mentioned right before (why think they didn't check OT too?).

Come to Orthodoxy, Christ’s true Church in its holiest form. I am fully convinced that Protestantism, even though seemingly well-intentioned, was injected by the Adversary to poison the Church with division. @@adelbertleblanc1846 good advice from a church that pots traditions before scripture. If the church followed the bible Catholicism would cease to exist. It's no secret why your church says that not everything has to be in the bible. Because everything it teaches, is no to in the bible. That is so genius. Then it attaches anathemas to all its teachings. If the teachings were true or biblical, why the need for all the anathemas. Trent pronounces over 100 such anathemas. And you are told you can't question anything? Or you're damned to hell? Just like Peter wrote, right. "Not by constraint, but willingly, not for filthy lucre." Bingo! I love the early Church, because it required a lifelong dedication to faithfulness in Jesus Christ. A baby’s baptism is consecrating and baptizing one’s child to the Lord, and penance is the fruits (works) of repentance which confirms one’s faith and salvation in the Lord. You see, apostasy tightens its grip in the end, which is now, advocating for the abolition of holy practices and rites founded in the communal Church for self-centered theology. Also, many argue against the politicization of Catholicism, but need to understand that Christendom is governmental. What Christ-like purpose does a Church that has divorced itself from society’s political realm serve? That is a powerless Church. The Church must be the salt and light of the world; thus, a Godly political establishment, not a weekend venue.

Orthodoxy rejects the Papacy because a man exalted to a supposed infallible position absolutely has no Biblical basis, but is a forced inference. What made Christianity true was not some complicated philosophical question it was did Jesus Christ rise from the dead or not? In the same way when we ask whether the Catholic Church is the true church or not it is not some deep philosophical question it is is the Eucharist the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ or not? If those things are true everything else is true as well.
