The real one was very different actually. Pesci plays a great gangster, but that gangster ain't Spilotro. Spilotro was much more calm on pablic as you can see. With Nicky you have this feeling he is a danger every second, he had to prove every second how dangerous he is, whyle Spilotro most probably would not do anything crazy on the street, unless absolutely necessary. Difference between a rookie gangster and old timer.
Everybody blames Tony Spilotro for the downfall but Frank bears a lot of the responsibility. He should've never ever appeared in public and not placed himself in a position to appear as Boss.

With the exception of Godfather 1 and 2 directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo, Martin Scorsese directs the absolute best American gangster films ever! Where in the hell would we be without those two making the best gangster films ever, especially Scorsese! Let's not forget Brian De Palma for Scarface and Carlito's Way! Though Casino is based on true events, obviously there are many inaccuracies within the movie. Such as the name of the Casino, which was actually the Stardust in real life as well as DeNiro, Pesci's and most of the characters names with the exception of Spilotros attorney who actually played in the movie as his attorney and if you watch this clip he's in both the movie and the real video. Furthermore, the most disappointing fact that I learned is The Spilotro brothers' death. In the movie, the brothers are buried alive after being beaten with baseball bats in a cornfield. However, according to trial testimony, they were actually summoned to a Chicago meeting assuming they were going to induct Anthony's younger brother Michael into The Chicago Outfit. After being lured into a basement for the induction, that's where they were beaten to death near O'Hare International Airport before being buried in a cornfield in Indiana. What is accurate, is that both brothers' bodies were found stacked on top of each other, covered in mud, and wearing only undershorts. They had suffered severe blows to their heads, necks, and chests. Additionally, in the movie it shows Nicky's best friend Franky involved in the murders by beating Nicky and his brother when in reality Franky, whose real name is Frank Cullotta was not involved and did not kill Tony Spilotro or his brother. In an interview I watched, Frank Cullotta feared that Spilotro was planning to kill him. Cullotta then turned on Spilotro and testified against him in court. Frank Cullotta also stated that he was actually disgusted once he learned how the Spilotro brothers were killed, though Frank Cullotta was a hitman and mobster for the Chicago Outfit and was involved in many crimes, including murder, arson, and extortion. Frank Cullotta also played in the movie Casino as a Hitman named Curly. If you watch the movie very closely, he's a Hitman in several scenes blowing people's heads off which he confirmed in an interview, but I noticed him in the movie before even watching the interview. Another true fact, is when Spilotro was ordered to kill an Irishman named Bill McCarthy which is a scene in the movie Casino where Nicky places McCarthy's head in a vise and then Franky cuts his throat. Based on testimony, McCarthy and James Miraglia were found dead in the trunk of a car on May 14,1962. McCarthy's head had been placed in a vise and his throat slashed, while Miraglia was strangled. Spilotro was acquitted later that year. Overall, phenomenal movie and very accurate!
As much as we know people have done good and bad. They did it mostly for greed, or satisfaction on some level. Their deeds are part of history regardless if we like it or not. Denying what happened such as, war, murder, genocide, corruption, rape,pillage, plunder, racism or slavery, you can't cherry pick the past. You can't change it. There is no do over, reset button, or it's an app, that let's you begin again. You must, must learn from it, or you are damned to repeat it.
