I Enjoyed your video & journey/ nice area up there/ maybe drive my Vanogan down to your area and explore/ Redding is not to terribly far from me / I am just s of Salem, OR. In Turner
Yes they do. If you are going to take the transmission out. I suppose if you are not taking the transmission out, you might be able to leave the axles connected to the transmission?
The part I found to be called "Camshaft Bridge" Mfg Part #066109210AC. ECS Part #ES#278128. Eurovaner's report the mesh-gasket is impossible to find a replacement for. Others point at the issue with the VVT's being clog due to sludge or in some cases pieces of the mesh that had disintegrated it in. Looking at your sprockets, they were not very worn, which prompts me to ask, what kind of codes were you getting? Also, did you replaced the VVT's or how did you clean them? A video of that would have been the first on RU-vid!
mine were not bad, so I just cleaned them with a brillo pad and Super Purple cleaner. I also blew compressed air through to make sure they were not clogged.
Did your timing chain tensioner had a hole on it? Did the new one came with the hole as the original one? Mine has a hole but I am not sure if the new ones come with the hole. From what I read, it sound like double chain's you need one with a hole on it, something to do with oil getting inside it.
You can. There are two types of emissions, CA and Federal. If it was originally a CA emissions vehicle, it has to have all that stuff on it, or go to a referee and pass their standards.
I was undoing the black circular pin plug that plugs on the left corner of the transmission and unfortunately the rounded plastic broke, particularly the plastic part that one is to compress to release. It is the one next to the transmission filler. Do you happen to know what part # is that or where I can order one. I don't seem to be able to find it on the internet, I was looking for possibly a way to not having to replace the hole thing but in stead just the plastic locking mechanism. Have you had any experience finding replacements for those German "quick releases"?. I'll try and make a video of my wires for your to refer to it too.I know one of them goes to a pin plug that is very close to the transmission oil cooler, took me. a while to find it. The black stiff looking like a negative battery cable goes through upward the back of the starter and it attaches on the engine near and a bit below the in between chain covers. Ill see if I can video that one too.
I think one of mine is broken too. The one on the front of the Trans next to the trans fluid fill port. I think if you go to a transmission parts shop, they might be able to assist, I’m just not there yet. I’ll be back on Lars the EuroVan in a few weeks after my work travel.
Interesting issue on the blinkers. For your headlights, are they LED? Do they require extra wiring for the blinker part of the headlight? Can you tell me where can they be purchased and brand? Thanks.
What size/type are the bolts that you fitted on the mount? Was it hard to drill a hole on the metal part of the mount? Thanks for addressing this questions.
Had a friend with a drill press. Slow and steady on drilling through steel with a harbor freight drill bit. I used the same bolt size that came out of the axle mount. Thanks for asking.
Getting a little ahead here but what is your plan for the transmission cooler thing?. I've heard people buying the $600 after market thing and also heard that after 2001 model the trans oil cooler works just fine. What's your take on this?
Hi Mr. Smith Garage, wow! Thank you for uploading this. I been at work so have not had the chance to comment on your videos, just know that I'm sure you'll get a ton of views with this type of content. My 2001 Eurovan developed an oil leak that I traced back to the corner between the upper timing cover and lower timing cover, right at the head gasket area (font of engine). I was able to removed the top chain cover with out moving the engine out. After watching you videos, I am on the pathway of possibly removing the engine to do the timing chain, exactly as you did it, so this content for me is gold and I wanted to appreciate you effort as I know that editing is not easy but time consuming. -Did you replace the lower chain cover? that one you show looks brand new! -Did you put gasket maker between the top and bottom chain covers where the head gasket meets?
Thanks, old cover cleaned well with harbor freight degreaser in a tank from HF. Between those two covers, I only put gasket maker in the corners where the parts meet the head and the block. Let’s hope it doesn’t leak when it’s all said and done.
