I've lived in Chicago, LA, Atlanta, Huntsville and Wisconsin Dells. Omaha's winter is rough, taxes are lame and roads are terrible but there's a lot of pros that outweigh compared to other places. Its a self sustained economy, island city, ppl are the friendliest most welcoming, lots of stuff to do and generally feel safe everywhere i go. Its nice cuz (in California especially) there's not really shady characters randomly walking around everywhere that i feel like i gotta be looking over my shoulder just getting a coffee at Panera. Google maps has been my best friend since im new here but this town has everything i need and is great, looking forward to finding a good job here and sticking around 😄
Thank you for sharing. I plan on visiting soon. Shirleys looks like a winner. Any banking (financial) centers that are within walking distance of housing?
I have tried Lisa's three times and can't do it again. The last time there I asked for scrambled cheese eggs, I received eggs with a slice of square un melted American cheese just lying on top'.
Omaha dealings with marital and family, relatives, and development of community programs, have a problem with divorced and singles and working class singles in the domestic economy. Most Public Housing Authority Application discriminate against divorced and single studio and one bedroom occupancy which have some social community relationships with unconsenting birth control nuisance, juvenile delinquency reckless parenthoods relationships discussed PHA being for population development by natural selection birth control with some Predacious Nuisance Acts as a government housing applications by no beat fatherhood with a GED on some needed fatherhood programs during incarceration opportunities today.
People who come here from outside Nebraska seem to like it quite a bit (I've met more Californians than I was expecting). People who are born and raised here, the most common complaint I've heard was that it was "boring" or "nothing to do". Me personally, as someone who walks everywhere and doesn't own a house and had seen snow maybe twice before moving here, I think it's quite pleasant here.
Climate change has severely affected the state! Both Omaha and Lincoln rely on well water and it's running out. Farmers and ranchers have been sending their children to college for decades now because they know that they won't be Farmers and ranchers. Climate change has almost eliminated winter. It's not the good life. The most unfriendly people. The dark side of the moon.
I have lived my whole life here and i thankful for giving this info to me. I was probably in the most lowest underfunded schools. I am the bottom the barrel and i need to start climbing out. Im young enough to start.
I am an immigrant. Lived all over this planet. I am not white. I love here and the people who live here. If you don't like it, pack your things and move out. It is thay simple.
Sounds like you’re not happy here. I lived in Texas for 26 years before moving here and I’m so glad I did. When I lived in lubbock they talk was always about the brain drain and there’s a video about the brain drain in Austin just a couple past yours on my feed. Young people leave because they want to live near the mounts or ocean or in a bigger city. Very few leave because of taxes, this may be part of why older people live along with wanting warmer winter weather. Nebraska is not as high of tax state as you say, every study I’ve read shows it being almost exactly in the middle. housing is still less than you’d spend in almost any large city, visitors think food and drinks here are really inexpensive. i’ve been to all 50 states and 57 countries and lived in Asia, Omaha is a great home base. Btw, half of my friends who live in LA and New York have moved from those cities because, even though they have great jobs, they can’t afford to do many of the things that those cities provide and have trouble affording to travel. in omaha we can afford to do these things. the grass definitely isn’t always greener.
You can go to Douglas / Sarpy county assessor and check the sales history, yourself. As for flood insurance it’s usually just ground swell and not rain. It’s a scam. But you can go to realtor. When I was house shopping I asked them to add flood plain overlay. They did, and have since added fire hazard overlay.
Good job talking about redlining. I wish I would have had your tips before buying my house in Omaha. Currently I trying to oppose a U Pull-It car shredder that is placed in South Omaha. Car shredders are notoriously placed near Black and Brown communities (redlining areas) and lower income communities. Car shredders pollute the environment and are associated with increased cases of asthma and cancer for communities living within miles of the car shredder.
Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, redlining is a part of our history as a nation. Good luck on your opposition to the car shredder, I did not know all of the health effects of a car shredder.
Yes, there are a lot of issues with car shredders that are not in a total enclosed building with a negative pressure environment as the EPA recently recommended. Car shredding can be done safely, but the South Omaha U Pull-It is refusing to do this recommendations.
Where in Nebraska I can find high mountain biking and hiking activity and local shop markets / farmers markets?Where in Nebraska can I find high mountain biking and hiking activities, as well as local shops and farmers' markets?
That is a great question! You might want to check out: www.mtbproject.com/directory/8009094/omaha for more information on some of the mountain bike trails near Omaha. For info on farmers markets, check out: omahafarmersmarket.com/ Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Personally as a college graduate I feel bad for leaving Nebraska but they treat my field like its a joke I left Nebraska for North Carolina and instantly got a 10k bonus and a $10 an hour raise I want the best for Nebraska but they won’t pay
@@DavidMatney Thanks for sharing. So far, I have lived in these states: Michigan Minnesota Texas and now in Nebraska. Studies / jobs etc.. Overall, I like midwest. Obviously, studies, income / job etc are big factors due to which people move from one state to the other. I always tried to avoid high cost of living areas like NY, CA etc. Also, very much commercialized and too fast life.. Just like any other state, NE also has pros and cons. Overall, it's ok. Especially, if average annual income is minimum 65000 / 70000. Propert taxes etc are there. Weather is also tough.. I totally understand. Nice informative video. Stay happy. Stay safe.
I live in Lincoln and all I will say is Nebraska is a good place to live, except for Omaha. There is not really much to do here. The few things there are, are unaffordable for me...Parks licenses, concert venues, etc. I would say Omaha sucks, mainly due to the fact that that is where all the liberal Democrats settle and their policies have run the city into the ground. Lincoln is headed there because we have a lot of liberals here, too. The thing that saves our electoral votes are the surrounding small farming communities in our district that vote conservative. Omaha always votes Blue...they don't get it. My cousin sits on the State Board of Education and Omaha reps are guilty of allowing "smut" into their school libraries. Hopefully, next election we can get them out! PS. Under the Obama years I lost my 31-year job. Even tho my house was paid off, I came within 1 week of putting it on the market because I COULDN'T AFFORD THE TAXES AND INSURANCE! Luckily a miracle happened the following week and saved my house, but I won't go into it here.
Me and my wife lived in Omaha for 22 years just this year we bought a house about an hour away in Iowa near red oak Traffic is way better Houses are cheaper. Better neighbors. U can see all the stars at night and. I say all this while still commuting everyday to Omaha for work so it’s a nice balance of city and country living
Nebraska needs to overhaul their taxes. 1) The city hotel occupancy tax is a percentage but should be $2 per night per room charge. This would bring in more income from travelers. 2) you have the Omaha restaurant tax wrong. The total tax is actually 9.68 percent. Why? The 2.5 tax applies to the other 7 percent tax! This is why so many places calculate this tax incorrectly.3) Brain-drain is misleading. People leave Nebraska, but later find it is too expensive to come back because of property taxes. Iowa is less expensive. 4) Segregated City is exaggerated. You can find this in the legislative district demographic maps.
I lived in the Omaha Metro area for almost 30 years. Omaha had a crime rate through the roof. I know NO ONE that hasn't been effected by criminals, of ALL sorts, there. There are way too many gangs in Omaha. The state, in general, is way too greedy. The entire area is toxic. I moved away 6 years ago & will NEVER go back OR give any positive feed back for Omaha.
left for grad school. Love coming back in the summer. And even for a week-ish around Christmas. But I'd rather die than go through several full midwestern winters.
Not to get political but omaha is also high in democrats and go for bidenomics its shown to not favor farmers and its communities nebraska is amazing to live in some of the lowest costs in America rural communities run nebraska always have always will
