Hey there, thanks so much and I'm glad you enjoyed the edits. I learned a lot while making this video! Recording in 4k takes a long of storage lol. Yes, like Mark said, its a corded saw. When I flip it out of the way, I just wrap the cord around the saw itself. One of the compromises of saving space. Thanks for stopping in 👍

It's just going to be a short no BS how to... I hoped to have it done already, but its been delayed. Hopefully in about a month I will have it posted. Between the guide, and the video I hope it will help others out if they need it, and I'm always happy to received emails to help too! vanislandstudio@gmail.com Thanks again Taylor! Hey Paul! Awesome setup, thanks for sharing it! I'm completely new (really completely, I'm actually a programmer) to woodworking, I'm starting my small shop so I can learn and try this kind of stuff, do you think this setup is achievable for someone new to woodworking? Or should I start with someone easier? Thank you!
@vanislestudio
@vanislestudio 7 дней назад
Hi Azgad thanks for your question... being a programmer I would imagine you would have to have some level of detail? I think woodworking is basically similar. For me, its all in the details. I take my time and make things as best I can with the tools I have. This workbench is not an easy build. That being said, its not difficult either. The hardest part of this project is the rotating shelf for the miter saw. I practiced this part first, and made a prototype. This helped me to understand the possible challenges I would face. The router work took time, but again, I practiced it on some scrap pieces of wood. To your question, I would say, if you have patience and enjoy learning new things / techniques, I would build it. I'm sure you will be frustrated at some point, or many points along the way, just like I was lol. See if you can make yourself a cross lap joint. See if you enjoy making it fit nicely. If so, I am not one to discourage anyone, and would encourage you to give it a go. Also, check out "Woodworking for Beginners" Its a Facebook group. You would be amazed at some of the first builds I have seen on this forum. Oh, if you start to work with tools / saws...etc. please be careful, don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, and most of have fun learning! Cheers

I'm not a woodworker, so forgive me if this is a silly question: When people make furniture, they are careful to allow for the expansion and contraction of wood across the grain from season to season with gaps for joints or panels to move. With this bench there doesn't seem to be any worry about that. Is it just that it is chunky and robust enough to resist, or am I missing something? P.S. I like your music choices. :) P.P.S. I also like your robot stop motion - reminds me of a childhood TV show "Take Hart", and the claymation figure "morph".
@vanislestudio
@vanislestudio 9 дней назад
Hi There that's a great question! I believe that plywood does not have the seasonal movement that solid woods do. I also let the moisture naturally leave the Douglas fur 2X4's for a very long time, sitting in my shop, in a level pile using spacers to allow for airflow and moisture release. In doing so, most of the shrinkage that will occur has already happened in the pile. I've found, for the most part, you do not lose anything in length, it is the width that will shrink with loss of moisture. Once I had the moisture content low enough, maybe about (12-15%) I built the workbench. Since the build, I have not noticed much movement. My shop is insulated, I'm sure that helps too. I'm sure there are much fancier workbenches that take into account expansion and contraction more seriously than I did, like a worksurface that has been glued together using many strips (like a butcher block). Not sure if I answered you question, but thought to share what I did to mitigate movement. Glad you enjoyed the music and stop motion! Its fun to create but takes a wee bit of time lol. Cheers!

Hi there, if its metal, Its so I can draw lines with a black marker onto the tape, showing me where I need to cut, sometime same with the wood, if I don't want to mark the wood with a pen, ill mark the tape, them remove later. Also, to keep tear out to a minimum if cutting wood. Nice that you noticed bud! Cheers

Hi VanIsle Studio, Out of curiosity, have you made any progress on this build ? I can't wait to see more of it, it is outstanding and I do hope you incorporate more tools into it to make it the ultimate workbench. A thickness planer that would use the entire workbench as an infeed and outfeed would be great, and also, a jointer that would do the same, with possibly a removable "top" to make up for the difference in thickness (workbench's top would be the jointer's outfeed height). Would also LOVE to see them being built in a mechanism that allows for easy lift/lower of the tools (idea: scissor lift-like mechanism)

Definitely High quality engineering & build. The Fine Furniture of the Workshop, I really expected a polished shiny surface, feel free to make a Part 2 where the robot attaches buffing pads to arm extensions and creates a mirror shine so the wood slides easier and the dust falls off quicker. 15:30 I was also expecting a Chesterfield cushioned effect on the table insert so the dust would conveniently channel into straight lines for cleaning up. But I suppose it will have to do!! If you're not cushioning the panel. please erase the excess layout lines, leaving them in it makes it look cheap and tacky like any ordinary mere mortal Yankee carpenter would do!

Hi Paul! I’m almost to the point of cutting the rotating shelf out of the top, just trying to piece the steps together in my head. I guess you first cut the shelf out at 90 degrees (circular/track saw then jigsaw to finish the corners). For the beveled cut though - how do you *start* that cut with a circular saw? I can do a straight down plunge cut but trying to plunge a beveled cut seems iffy at best. Do you just angle into it instead of plunging, then clean it up later?
@vanislestudio
@vanislestudio 21 день назад
Hi, Yes, I first cut the shelf out at 90 degrees, (circular/track saw then jigsaw to finish the corners). For the beveled cut, I carefully plunged my track saw into the cut. If you do not have a track saw, you could try a few things. 1st...I would clamp a staring edge to guide your cut. (Straight 2 X 4 or long ruler, or anything you have that is straight). Make sure it's clamped tight and will not move. You can keep light pressure with the base of the circular saw pushing against that straight edge and the tabletop surface. I would practice this on some scrap pieces of wood. Take your time, be very careful, go very slowly. 2nd - Do not cut to the line (where you need that cut to be)... cut before it, well before it. This does a few things, first, if you mess up, there is more room still to correct your error. 2nd, you can gradually sneak up to the correct distance (leaving 3/16 inch vertical thickness as indicated on page 60) 3rd. I contemplated using a jigsaw for this as well, but ultimately decided on going with the track saw. You may have luck with a jigsaw, but I would always practice these types of cuts first, on some scraps. The nice thing about the track saw, is it keeps the saw down tight and flush with the surface of the table. Hope this helps some. Let me know if you are unsure about anything... Wishing you luck here, remember to be careful, take your time, practice first :)

That's such a great solution for the table saw height adjustment. I just made a workbench and was trying to think of a more elegant way to do that than just sticking wood shims under the saw's feet like I did. I might have to add this to my bench in the future.
