My apples and pear espalier are in their first spring/summer after planting them in late winter. I have been training two horizontal first tiers as they grow and leaving a central leader. The first tier is growing well. Its now mid summer. I have some branch growth coming off the two trained laterals and some off the central leader. Should I be summer pruning in the first year on my first tier laterals? Is mid summer too late for that? I have one pear which has produced a few laterals off the central leader at a tier two height. Should I train those now or is it best to cut the central leader back in winter to start the next tier from fresh? Thanks

Hi, i saw your video. I have a honey crisp apple tree which i bought from a nursery near me last year. It had many flowers after I brought it home and planted it in ground but i plucked all of them so that the roots can grow. This year before the spring i pruned it. Now its May end and i did not get any flowers in my tree 😞 how long is it gonna take for the blooms to come? And i can see pests on the leaves. I sprayed neem oil and not seeing much improvement. Is honeycrisp hard to grow? How should i take care of them. I am new to this gardening and so I would like any recommendations so that i dont kill them and i can see some blooms atleast next year. Please.
@UtahSustainGardening
@UtahSustainGardening Год назад
You need to wait a couple of years before you allow the tree to have fruit. It needs the energy to grow roots. 'Honeycrisp' is one of the more difficult trees to get a harvest from and even professionals struggle some years to get a good harvest.

@UtahSustainGardening
@UtahSustainGardening 2 года назад
There is no good way to get rid of them. Most species of wasp just want to be left alone, this is one of the best understandings you can have when working with wasps. For next year it may help if you put wasp traps out early and keep them properly baited it may help. But you will still get plenty of attention from the neighbors wasps no matter how well you manage the ones on your property.

American Fork reported to the devision of water rights that it leaked 240 million gallons of water from broken water lines. So why are we being water shamed. I reported to the city a few years ago about sprinklers on the same spot for 3 days at the park across from the temple and city staff told me that the city is exempt. Interesting that you showed the lawn at art dye park where the carnival was set up for 3 days.
@UtahSustainGardening
@UtahSustainGardening 2 года назад
I tried to go back in time and check out past practices from the city in hopes of catching them, but Dr. Who had a previous engagement trying to save the universe. Sorry about that! But seriously, I can only check on what is happening in the preset. And I specifically mentioned that two of the parks were complained about online which is why I chose them in the first place. I didn't mention who that person was nor did I even bother to remember the name. The important thing is to evaluate where the city is at now. And honestly, they are doing their best as shown by the 6 parks I visited. I was clear that I did go to more park, but opted to not show them due to time constraints. 20 minutes of looking at dormant lawn is simply overkill for most viewers. As for the leaked water? That is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. But the reality is that the city has SELF REPORTED. This means they are working on the issue. As someone trying to fix two major leaks at his work property, this is not an easy or cheap task. I am hoping they will increase taxes soon to fix the old outdated systems, some of them sorely need it! As far as shaming goes, there are no names or addresses listed. One of the neighbors lawns showed enough browning that it was clear they were watching their water. Only a few people in my neighborhood might figure out who's lawns I showed, but there is no shame to the folks who's lawns I showed. Except mine, that is a yard that sorely needs some work! On the other hand, if the city had not shown that its due diligence, I would have more than shamed them, I would have down right humiliated them. To recap: I showed what I found based on multiple properties, all that were very similar in turf quality to each other. I did not attempt to reconstruct what happened in the past, I can only show a reasonable presentation of lawn care as it is happening this year. The citizen lawns I showed were less than representative because I only showed three of them. Two of those faired well for water use, so I don't feel bad about that at all. If you see differently, you are free to put together your own video showing it. I will certainly watch it.

i have many years of experience with puncturevine. Then years ago, we moved into a rural, semi-desert property. Immediately adjacent to my property is a dirt/gravel road with hard-packed, barren soil along the other side of the road. I knew nothing about puncturevine but quickly became aware of it after many, many occasions of suffering flat tires on our bicycles, as well as having to remove the seeds from our several dogs and cat. The infestation of this weed was so bad that if you walked on the area, the soles of your shoes would be totally covered by the sharp seeds. And the only way to remove these seeds is to use needle-nose pliers and remove them one-by-one. After a couple of years of trying to make this area a "no-go zone", we briefly attempted to remove these weeds by digging them out. That was not viable, considering the size of the infested area. We tried using a couple of different pre-emergent applications, but it became clear after 2 years that this method wasn't working either. Finally, we tried using glyphosate. Three applications each year. The first application is as soon as we notice the slightest bit of vegetation emerging - easy to do since only the most persistent plants will grow in this area. We have finished our fourth season of this regime and I can say that we are winning the battle. Our unscientific "shoe test" has improved dramatically. Now we get only a few seeds on the soles of our shoes after walking around the entire area.
@UtahSustainGardening

I am all for using glyphosate! But folks have been getting so much bad information that it is very hard to bring it up without someone wanting to turn it into a fight.
