Which is the better gear, the 1.88:1 or the 1.91:1 gear? I have one of both in my boat and the 1.88 gear seems to go into gear with more “authority” than the 1.91. Same RPMs at idle as well. What was the reason for the ratio change so close like that?
Have 1992 Mastercaft 190 prostar with 351 and believe it has a 1 to 1 and is slipping when taking of out the hole does that mean the velvet dive is going out prop seem tight and fluid looks good any thing else it could be new to ski boat it’s the family boat any help would be wonderful thank you
Hi. Have the 630A gearbox..weak sound in shift and slips underload recently..new oil and filters no air leak..suspect it's the control Box would you say also? Thanks.
@halemarine5991 just removed and refitted the control box no obvious damage now its working perfectly.....suspect the bolts may not have been properly tightened...strange.
Nice, have two of these on our house boat... was looking at where drain the trans fluid. Most videos pump it out. Do the gearbox and drive box share fluid?
Hi Chris, I have seen this too in other trannies, and wonder if the incorrect hose type in the case of a repalced hose can contribute, or the internals of the oil cooler along with long intervals between any oil changes, and maybe even some disc slippage. Cant get the sludge out and almost no private owner removes the screen to clean it. Anyway, you helped me once and sold me parts. Thanks for all you do! I have seen most of your vids, very helpful. Its Saturday....cheers sir!
I have run into this situation not just in transmissions but also on other applications, bearing that appeared legit, same numbers, but were copies and slightly different.
Hi, I'm from Australia and I have a Velvet Drive Transmission Model 20-02-044 Serial No 3121. My PSS shaft seal was leaking. However it was only leaking under load at 1900rpm.I also discovered that whilst underway the prop shaft seemed to be bent. After removing the shaft and having it straightened, we bolted the shaft up to the V drive and again it wasn't running straight. After putting a dial indicator on it again it was running 10 thou out. So we unbolted the shaft coupling from the transmission coupling and machined the shaft coupling. Once we re-attached the shaft coupling to the shaft we placed the dial indicator on it and it was showing a reading of 2 thou. However once the shaft coupling is attached to the transmission coupling and place the dial indicator on it, it runs back out to 10thou. Could this be a bearing or something else in the V Dive that is throwing it out of alignment. I might add that the transmission seems to be running as it should with no clunking in forward and reverse not noisy, and seem to be doing everything that it is meant to be doing. not any different to the other transmission in the boat. I look forward to what your opinion might be. Regards Bill Email lkwholidaypark@outlook.com.au
My ol'man dropped the grommet from the dip stick inside the transmission. I fished out the washers with a magnet. How can I get the grommet out its 2.5/1 for small block
Great Videos Man! I have a question for you. I rebuilt my 72C Velvet Drive about 7 years ago. Last Weekend the pump seal failed catastrophically. Half the fluid drains in 5 seconds. The boat was running cruise speed and it was like it was pulled into neutral. I shut it down and got towed in. I have the full rebuild kit to replace everything. People are telling me to replace the seal and put in back in. I'm thinking is better to replace the clutches but I'm not a transmission expert. I would be very interested in your opinion. Thank You
I will post a video later today discussing this issue. It is common problem nowadays. If it helps please go to my website halemarine.com and send me a donation through the QR code Thank You
@@halemarine5991I watched the new video. I greatly appreciate the explanation. Comments are turned off or I would have posted on that video. When would be a good time to give you a call? I want to confirm I'm looking at the right pump you mentioned and I have a question about the rest of the transmission. Thank you Sir
I have changed the output shaft seal twice due to leakage, but after a few hours of sailing, the seal starts leaking again. Any idea why? "ZF Hurth HSW 630 A1"
why would the pump ever lock up like that? And these don't have different ratings in direction A vs B according to the manual I believe? How come the gears are different width then?? Would appreciate your knowledge!
Have you got any experience with ZF (hurth) 45 to 80 series (HSW 800 is what we have) that are fitted with trolling valves? I know you are not supposed to use anything higher than pretty much idle, and if an owner didn't respect that, clutch plates go out fast. But I was wondering if you have any real world experience with these clutch plates in terms of accelerated wear, if trolling is done, compared to non trolling drives? Some people insist they do, others say they don't and the technical manual doesn't discuss that
Hello, I think I may have an issue regarding this on my 1017-004 borg Warner v drive 1-1. I took it out on the lake and would engage the reverse Easily and output shaft kicks on great ! But when I go into forward I get nothing on the output unless I hand turn it and away she goes and works correctly after. Can you steer me in the right direction ?
Hello. How would I identify what valvet drive I have when the tag is missing. Can I use any of the numbers on the housing to identify exactly what transmission I have.
Hi my frend, can i ask you a question please? Yuo can say me in this modrel zf63a the thickness in millimeters of the clutch discs when new? Do you think mine measure 2mm and should be replaced? Thank you soo much..
I have a 1:1 velvet drive in an ‘88 tristar. I have tans fluid mixed with water oozing from the tranny to the drain hole. What is causing the water to mix with the fluid? Transcooler leak?
Trying to get bearings off both shafts. Should that bearing on the left pop or does it have to be pressed all the way off? Can’t get mine off the input or lay shafts. Have bearing tool similar to what is in the video. Can get started moving on input shaft but can’t even get tool on the lay shaft.
Thanks! We did finally get them off. Messaged you quite a while ago and finally getting started on the rebuild. Will send some pictures of gears soon. Think they look good but I appreciate your opinion.
@@halemarine5991 what is your going rate for a good running take out unit? I’m not 100% of the ratio. It’s not quite 2:1 but rotation is the same as input rotation. It was behind a Perkins 4.107 in a back up engine on a sail boat.
Thank you for all of the videos! I have a customer that says his ski boat will not really go into neutral. You mentioned this complaint in other videos. It is a mid to early 80’s boat. Has Velvet drive. What do I need to replace the old style bushing set up like you are showing? I’ll need to tear it down to verify this is the problem. But if it is, is there a retrofit kit? Thanks in advance.
I have a 1.91. 1 with 6 clutches built by bopper marine. 400+ houses no problems I change my fluid every 50 HR with oil change overkill I know but so easy and cheap why not . thanks for the videos advice and entertainment
