Check out the raw footage (it’s even cropped smaller for the model/AI) from Comma units here: github.com/commaai/comma10k/tree/master/imgs2 - look for “e” in the file names for wide cam. The model/AI in Epilog Sidecar is very likely the same model that has been trained from these exact images.

Hi again. Great to watch another scenic drive after wrapping up another hectic workweek. I'll add that I'm playing the Taris Upper City theme from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic while watching this. That game is still considered by many to be one of the best RPG's from the 2000's. Wonder if you've played that, too. I recall that we briefly spoke about how updates can be bothersome or hindering. Hearing that Epilog seems to do fine without many updates would be satisfactory. Pity that you'll have to return the unit, though. Hope that you weren't too attached.

It is a pity indeed because I love this thing lol I view the updates in the same way as updates to our Tesla Model 3… I think for quite a while nothing had happened with AutoPilot and I didn’t really care; it continues to work as well as I expect it to. Now, if I had paid for EAP or FSD, then I’d be squirming in my seat for an update! I’m literary sitting in my Tesla as I type this and got to my destination with FSD, but I still see massive value in SideCar in its current form. I never got into KOTR, since I was probably playing some Fallout title, HL2, or MotoGP. I did play a bunch of SW on PS1… when I find time I’m also aiming to play more Rouge Squadron in VR!

@@bryan.deleon How often do updates happen for Tesla? I have a friend who drives a Tesla vehicle. Regarding Star Wars games, I *DID* play The Phantom Menace which did release on the PS1. Exploring Tatooine was fun. As for lightsaber combat, I'd suggest Jedi Outcast because of decent lightsaber combat mechanics even though the game's over 20 years old. I still remember playing Jedi Outcast in my senior year of high school.

I’m very interested in this. Although it really feels like this was released too early. It’s really just a headless openpilot that’s only for Toyotas right now on an unknown version of OP? I believe in another video you said they told you it was “0.9.x” and I’m confused why they’re being vague about it. I think you also mentioned at one point they wanted to have some sort of carplay integration. They really should’ve had this on version 1, I think that’s important. Still super interesting though. This is exactly what I was going to do with openpilot, create a headless system with carplay, but if I can have that pre-made, that would be fantastic.

@bryan.deleon 5 месяцев назад
Cool to see more interested in a headless version of Comma! (I'm speaking with privilege as a Toyota owner) but I for one believe in releasing a solid product with clear compatibility for a few cars is welcoming, over offering a product with a confusing array of "kinda/sorta" compatibility for many cars; it's awful seeing buyers in Discord realizing they missed some asterisk/footnote and loosing out on a feature they thought as default. After using forks for years, the vagueness of "v0.9.x.x" is fine since many forks will ingest features from a future branch or remove those found in prior releases; remember that Epilog is forcing Openpilot to work on completely new instructions - nVidia Cuda vs Qualcomm ARM. Also taking into account that Epilog is using software to use two data sets from only one camera sensor with cropping. Maybe you are more interested in the "model"? Regarding CarPlay integration, I'm in the camp of "cool to play with" but not something I need; my dash gives me the info I need. The CarPlay integration was kinda in line with Comma's NoO... which they have since removed due to poor performance aka automated lane changes without proper blind spot monitoring and "blind" in intersection.

I am thrilled! Hard to understand that you return the system. I could never have that coma unit obstructing my view. But this one is of course mainly geared to the relatively good road behaviour of Californian highways. Europe is having huge discussions trying to mandate some sort of acceptable mandatory system to supposedly recognise speed limits. Their own industry heavyweights are unlikely to agree on a common system.

I'll need to start saving up to get one to keep. Going to miss this thing for sure. I'm curious how legislation will enforce that speed limit recognition mandate? Will cars need Map Data locally or OTA? Hard to rely on the camera Road Sign Recognition, so the data has to come from somewher.

Here's what I'm still trying to rap my head around the lateral control concepts. Feel free to point out any errors have made here because I am still learning. What I am hearing is a lot of people are expecting more out of NNFF/NNLC then it is capable of producing, and it's due to misunderstanding exactly what it's doing. I was one of those people. There are several different "MAXIMUMS" one can talk about here: -Steering Motor Capability - This is the theoretical maximum torque that the motor that turns the wheels of the car is ever capable of reaching, essentially before it would otherwise burn itself out electrically. This number is in the HUNDREDS of ft-lbs (or as WirelessNet2 says in his Medium article "capable of easily tearing your arms off"). This is wholly impractical when talking about driving a car (automatically or manually), so it will be ignored from this point forward, but it STILL does differ, car-to-car. -Next, is the "Stock Maximum Torque" - this is the maximum amount of demand that your car's Electronics Control Unit (ECU) will "ask" the steering motor to provide on the vehicle's stock LKA/LCA system, out of the factory. This is some arbitrary value that vehicle assist system manufacturers will pick, probably while being hounded by hundreds of corporate and federal safety officers reqiring it to be set WELL BELOW a value that could potentially cause the car to "steer itself." -Now, let's talk about OpenPilot 0.9+ "NNLC/NNFF" auto-tuning modes. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING that OpenPilot is ONLY capable of "tuning" the values UP TO, BUT NOT EXCEEDING the "Stock Maximum Torque." There is NOTHING in these NNLC/NNFF settings that gets around that. In other words, UNTIL OP version <0.9, the "free the car from the safety officers" parameters have been more or less "static" or assigned, car-to-car, a "static" value. The values don't change depending on driving conditions (namely speed vs torque). NNFF/NNLC gets around THIS by automating how much torque in the "TORQUE ENVELOPE" (0 to "Stock Maximum"). But again, it does NOT get around the "Stock Maximum Torque" IN OF ITSELF. -The ONLY WAY to change the "Stock Maximum Torque" would be use of a program that REPROGRAMS the code itself in your ECU, essentially by putting a multiplier into the stock car's code. THIS is what WirelessNet2 talks about in his Medium article, and YES, you can USE your COMMA DEVICES and OBD-II interface to DO this, but it is NOT OpenPilot CODE. And when you DO that, which is becoming more and more possible on more and more cars, you create a new drive profile for your car which while DOES allow it to get around turns better, may cause the wheel to become JERKY. -NOW, you can have an NNFF/NNLC script applied to your car's torque-modified ECU Demand profile that will SMOOTH OUT those jerks. This is what the guy on Discord (can't remember his handle right now) is doing for people. He made one for a Honda Clarity 3X Torque, but not for a 2X torque which is what I have, and I heard the 3X torque is being "outlawed" for being too much. I know this was a lot of info, but I'm trying to wrap my head around this and I feel like bombing this comment on Discord would annoy people.
@bryan.deleon
@bryan.deleon 5 месяцев назад
So you didn’t want to annoy people on Discord but I’m somehow free game? lol I never expected more torque. I expected increased accuracy with the torque I already had available. Success in a curve is determined before even approaching a curve. ;) This is quite an old video, and like you mentioned, NNFF work has been introduced - but all it seemed to uncover is that the path planning from the model itself is lacking. All the accuracy in world can’t fix bad instructions aka “wanting to cut corners”, from late turn in.

I have a 2031 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and the stock adaptive cruise control seems to do all the same things as this. It keeps spread, slows down, starts and stops with the cars in front of you and keeps speed. Maybe the only thing it doesn’t do is switch lanes on its own. But really the stock system basically does basically the same thing. Why would I pay $650 more for not much more benefit? Tesla still leads the way, where you can input a destination, and the car will follow a map and get you there all on its own, take the appropriate exits it needs to, stop at stop lights and stop signs, make turns on non-highway just regular neighborhood roads, etc. Tesla is the inky company that’s really exploring true self driving. Not just adaptive cruise control.

The improvement in lane-keeping is significant, and something one needs to experience first hand. The addition of cut-in detection, is also a welcome feature over stock. The ability to have a safety backed driver monitoring system, that enables hands free driving is something that’s wonderful and hard to quantify. It “does the same thing” but so much better; if you ever had fun as a kid skateboarding or rollerblading - it’s like changing out the default bearings of your wheels to ABEC 5’s. They still roll, but the value in improvement is subjective to your value of a dollar. If you can afford this upgrade (1.87% of your car’s $35,000 value), and your car is compatible - it’s really worth a try for $650 and you can return in 30 days for a full refund. Even Comma OpenPilot has the same return policy so you can stop being an arm chair observer and experience it yourself. PS - I also have a Tesla Model 3 with the current FSD beta, and I still think the Epilog SideCar is a fantastic product. ;)
