The best roto tool on the market is not Resolve... it's Silhouette. Magic Mask is adequate for color grading, but largely useless for rotoscoping, if you have standards. Magic Mask needs a LOT of work.
Thanks for the insight! Silhouette sounds great... but at $1,995 for a perpetual license or almost $800 for a yearly subscription... it's outside the budget for most, I think. I know I can't afford that. For what Magic Mask can do, you're right - it's adequate. It isn't perfect, but at least it's something.
Thanks so much for this. I have watched this a couple of times now, so am going to give it a go. I am no serious amateur, but did a wedding video for my niece. I forgot to record some kids on the day making chapter dividers ; for example, some of them saying Lets get Married, lets eat. the first dance etc. So I had the idea of using magic mask to put them back in the wedding even though the videos of them were recorded back at home........(thought you might appreciate a genuine use case and gratitude in making this video)
That's a great use case for it! And yes, I DO love hearing feedback like this! So many videos seem geared towards one specific use case, but I tried to make it as general as possible while showing my own results. Good luck with it, let me know how it turns out!
Great question! Click and hold your middle mouse button/wheel and drag around your mouse, and the preview screen will move with it. Thanks for watching!
Haha, that's a good one. It's not an act, though - you can check out my other channel - www.youtube.com/@RoadReality/ - I enjoy my stogies. :D Thanks for watching!
Have the same problem from day 1 with the GP12. I've spoken with GoPro support over 10 times and they say something different each time. They told me v2.20 firmware fixes the problem and the "team" just informed them it's fixed. It doesn't. They said replacing my camera's might fix the problem, but there is no guarantee it will. They said you have to do a manual firmware update and it will fix it. It didn't. I just spoke with them 30 minutes ago, and they said the "team" is aware of the issue and they are working on a fix. But, there is no date or estimate when it will be released or any evidence at all they are doing anything to fix the issue. It's been 10 months. If there were working on it, they would have fixed it by now. I'm thinking they aren't getting enough complaints so they don't care. Only a lawsuit will get their attention. The GP13 will be out in 2 months, that's what they are working on. This issue will probably persistent for the 13 as well.
Thanks for the feedback - this has been my experience with GoPro's CS too... what a shame. I certainly hope the 13 fixes this - if not... it'll be time to look at DJI. Nobody else has a multi-camera remote, though - not like GoPro does with power on/off as well as starting and stopping recording. And THAT is something I use all the time!
Well it is good, but it is even better with a green screen. However, if I filmed something without a green screen and I want to replace the background, I will try it out.
I totally agree! Like being outside for the intro to this video - a green screen just isn't practical. Let me know how you like Magic Mask, once you try it!
I bought the Studio version in 2021. I started video editing with Filmora and we had a fight about an upgrade and they reimbursed me the whole year. Daniel Batal advised me to switch to DaVinci Resolve and I felt it is another level. I don't remember why I decided to buy the studio version, but I had good reasons, I would say. I never regreted it.
@@georgesmith6785 Ahh, sounds like your Render Cache is off. You can right-click on the clip and select Render Fusion Output. Wait for the red line to turn blue, and it should play back fine, with sound.
If you did greenscreen, would it be better than using the normal keying nodes, as you have to make sure that the greenscreen has to be evenly lit, no wrinkles and have the subject far enough away to get no green light spill.
I use the normal keyer nodes when I use a green screen... but Resolve has enough matte control to work around wrinkles and uneven lighting. I should do a green screen tutorial. The green spill is a pain sometimes, especially where I film [not enough room for proper separation].
Magic mask is definitely what lead me to buy the studio version… so backstory I’m a dance videography and on a specific project after I sent the final edit the client was like “can u blur out the background? 🤦🏾♂️” …the only problem with that was that the dance video was 20 mins long with dozens of dancers moving in and out of frame and to sit and keyframe all the movements was not it so got out my credit card and the rest was history
My favourite feature, or at least the feature that convinced me to purchase studio, is that I can use my 4090 during rendering. Takes a 1 hour render to 10 mins.
@@waantonproductions4186 Thanks! TBH, this video tried to melt my brain and my computer... and apparently the 2 Magic Masks I used in fusion to accomplish the goal of the rotoscoping display... got misplaced by Resolve. I just went into the timeline in Resolve and looked - I had to Regenerate the Magic Masks, and now it looks fine! No way to replace that chunk of the video though, unfortunately... and you were the first to notice!
@@CreatorReality1 funny how me making a Muppets reference because you said phenomenal because of the Manama na song with the Muppets made you notice a video mistake, still that's cool it turned out like this.
@@waantonproductions4186 Honestly, I didn't get it as a Muppets reference until you said it was... I was thinking it was more of a "womp womp" sad face thing... but thanks! I just recorded a video showing what happened, how to fix it in the future, and a couple of other nuggets of Resolve info goodness. I'll be sure and shout you out in the video description!
Oh, that's a good one! FWIW, the Camera Tracker doesn't like fisheye action camera footage, LOL. I've used it a couple of times, but MAN OH MAN is that a lengthy process with my computer!
Definitely Magic Mask. I bought the Speed Editor and got the full Studio Version thrown in for $100 more than the software would have been on its own. No brainer.
Heck yeah - that's a good deal! I bought Studio years ago, when the Speed Editor was $295... thanks to your comment, I looked it up and it's gone up to $395, but still comes with a license for Studio - thanks for the info!
Great point! Those higher resolutions aren't available for free. The H.265 you talk about... IIRC, it can be rendered by an Nvidia graphics card if you have Studio - definitely a boon for rendering!
Great content! I do have a question. Say I want to mask something out. An example would be like you did to yourself when you added yourself to the beach. How can you save that clip of yourself and use it in later projects, where you can also change your shape, size, and position? If you understand what I mean and you explain how to do it please explain like you're talking to a child.
Ahh, good question! You'd have to either render the clip out using the Deliver page, and make you set "Export Alpha" - like how I did in the Transparency video, or you could use a Saver node in Fusion to do the same thing, and a Loader in the other projects. The easiest way to do it would be to render with Alpha. Here's a link to the Transparency video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oV-4-w78W78.html
@@pguerrero329 Ahh - then you're prepped to do it - just set your In and Out markers on the start and end of the clip with the transparency, and then render it - it should then be usable in other projects :D Don't forget to set it to video instead of PNG, though.
@@pguerrero329 No, it'll just render a bunch of PNGs... one for each frame. You want to render it as a .MOV, if I remember correctly. A video format with transparency. EDIT: I just checked - and AVI and MOV/QuickTime will support transparency.
Magic mask is definitely a favorite. As far as "studio-not studio" is concerned, I used to pay $100 aud a year for about 10 years upgrading Videostudio Pro. Resolve Studio is a one off payment for life. "No brainer" for me. 🙂
Nothing personal, you asked so I'll give you my answer... Cost... Not everyone tries to supplement their income by learning editing using the Free version... It makes a huge difference in putting food on the table and investing the value of the Studio version. It wouldn't even be the Magic Mask that would make me purchase the Studio version (which I already use) but other resources... I'm very good at rotoscoping and I like doing it and so far I haven't seen the magic mask surpass any of my projects that I've done manually . Perhaps for someone who has a recording studio, showing up smoking an expensive cigar, the price of the Studio version may not be missed, but for many others it is.
OK, first: I love your handle - COFFEE LOVER! Second: I totally get that the cost is something a lot of people can't swing. I won't even argue that. I've tried my hand at rotoscoping, and I wasn't very good at it, and it sucked up hours of my time that was better spent doing other editing-related tasks, so my hat's off to you! As for my recording studio... it's a glassed-in porch, and the cigar wasn't expensive :D After all the thousands of hours spent editing in Resolve, I figure I got my money's worth a long time ago, though. Thanks for watching & sharing your perspective!
@@coffeelover1456 Thanks! It's certainly not easy - but there's ways to work around a lot of "limitations" LOL... I just spent a lot of time figuring out how to do things. If you head over to my main channel @RoadReality , you'll see that I too, love coffee! I have it in a mug on my Harley for almost every ride! :D
I'm slowly getting to grips with Resolve and have managed to get a few motovlog videos on to my channel over the past few months. Im now using your multicam method rather than the sync bin, which I have found so much better than the sync bin, but fusion still scares the crap out of me. Your bite sized explanations are just perfect! Most tutorials I have watched go way too in depth for beginners like me. Thank you and keep them coming please!
Great tips, thank you. I know the adjustment clip but use it too less . Even when i´m ready with post I think :" 'Damned, i did everything inside the footage, why do I not use the Adjustment clip. Hopefully with your awaking of my mind, I will remember this in future earlier 🙂
@@CreatorReality1 How nodes are related to each other and how to arrange them in order to get effect I want. I more or less understand their concept but two transform nodes kinda lost me
@@DAG_M Oh, I get it! And there's no left-to-right or top-to-bottom way of "reading" the node tree. Let me noodle this one, I bet I can break it down and make it make sense in an upcoming video!
It'll work the same way... but may not look right since those sorts of objects tend to move around a LOT and scale up as you get closer... it's worth giving it a shot, though! Let me know how it goes :D
Sure! Just drag your clip up one track, then go to your Effects library > Generators and drag a Solid Color Generator down into the open space beneath your clip. Change the color using the Inspector, and you're all set!
Honestly never had this bug. I have a bug with PLT in Resolve19 not tracking correctly which I haven't found a workaround for yet. If you have footage larger than the timeline size (I have 4k footage I'm using in a 1080p timeline) it does weird things when you output the planar transform and the only way I can fix is if I switch it to stabilize, then reverse stabilize after the thing you want to composite. But by doing this you loose the ability to add motion blur to what you are compositing, since it technically isn't moving, everything else is.
That's an odd one - I hope BMD fixes that before the final release of DR19! I'm always using 4k footage in a 2.7k timeline and I haven't experienced that before.
@@CreatorReality1 I posted the bug in the forum and didn't get a reply. Not tried the beta 3 patch yet though. Fingers crossed. In the mean time I faked the motion blur by applying it with a power window and temporal motion blur. It's dirty and not accurate but hopefully not too noticeable.
@@ArcanePath360 That's a smart workaround! I'm waiting until DR19 is out of Beta before I download it ... I always have too many projects in the works to be able to make sure it's OK for me.
@@CreatorReality1 To be fair it's pretty stable for a beta. In fact just as stable as the full release which crashes just as often on me, if not better. I'm glad I chose to try it. This is the only real bug I found so far and I've been using it a lot
@@ArcanePath360 Thanks! That's good info! I think MrAlexTech was the only other RU-vidr talking about reliability for the newest Beta. I might download it this week, then.
