As you can see, you need a swell from the Southwest (New Zealand) in order to make the wave. There was a swell twice this size back around 2009 from the Southwest, and you could take off near MacGregor Point. There is a DVD you can get of that event, and it is spectacular.
This break wakes up every 10 years or so… runoff from the mountains during rain creates this layer of debris over the reef! When it gets rough, it churns up that layer of crap in which creates the “murky” water
