Thank-you for sharing this interview. The French hid much of their best research and work from the germans, and only after the war restarted work on a few secret projects. They were on the cusp of some research, but it got secreted into hiding and paused.
Thank you, Don. I have heard Chuck speak several times, and I'm so impressed that he is still able to do it at 100 years of age! Thank you for your continuing efforts to honor veterans. It's always good to see your work online.
My dad survived on the Raleigh and helped get Vassen out of the Utah. We have pictures of my dad, Jack and the other gentleman who helped get Jack out of the ship. 🙏🏻

This is my Great Grandpa and I have never seen this interview before! Brought a tear to my eye, he passed about 10 years ago and I miss him and his stories dearly. Would love to see the rest of the footage if you have it.
Terminology is a bit off. LORAN and Radio Direction Finding are different things. At the time, finding your way with a radio direction finder using AM broadcast band or Long Wave beacons was a popular way to navigate. Back in the 1990's I was stationed on a US Coast Guard ship based out of Kodiak. At nights, I'd often tune our radio direction finder to 810KHz and be able to listen to KGO loud and clear all the way up there. The needle pointed the way to my childhood home. Familiar voices and even the commercials were a welcome reminder of where I grew up. Sad to see KGO losing it's way, not the station it once was…
Funny thing is for me as a U.K. Army Vet is that back in the day going up in a chopper I really didn’t think about enjoying the ride. I was too much focused on getting to the objective and disembarking correctly on the objective and what our immediate drills were on the ground etc. These guys had a ball doing this I’m sure. I did Chinook, Puma mainly.
