Men's and women's vintage fashion today differ mainly in the eras and influences they draw from, with women incorporating a broader range of accessories and styles into modern looks, while men's vintage often focuses on specific historical periods and includes distinct, statement accessories.
From my studies I find that the women’s clothing have the advantage of wearing any thing and making it work , as men can’t really pull of shrunk or short shirts
Biggest difference I found personally between men’s and women’s vintage, is the more unique, less restrained variety of clothing women have over men. A good example of this that I have seen is through Harley Davidson. Women’s Harley Davidson definitely stand out more than men’s pieces. Either through what’s printed on a garment or through the fabric the garment is made out of. I always appreciate ladies vintage cause I love my statement pieces and love standing out in a crowd with my clothing.
I see a lot of men looking for statement pieces, whether that be a racing jacket, shoes, tees, etc.. with women’s I see more of a collective effort to piece everything together. More accessory focused like jewelry and bags. Even though nowadays it’s very common to see a mixture of both on anybody in the culture.
I think biggest difference is the fact that women and men thrifting/shift is the fact that women are a lot more experimental with what they are buying compared to men. It isn't a bad thing, I think men are very focused on the brand than women are focused on fit. You'll see a lot more women dress “better” then men because the type of garments that are made for there bodies, and the silhouettes that are made compared to men. Great videos as always ❤️
Hey Tom, I personally think the biggest difference is the statement pieces. For the guys I feel like it’s a top or sneakers! Like a tee or good jacket or a heater pair. I feel like women reach more for accessories like bags, glasses, or jewelry. This can be in both streetwear and vintage!!
i think the main difference between mens and womens vintage is the current fashion trends, right now mens trends revolve around streetwear, gorpcore, quiet luxury, whereas womens trends are about coquette core, office siren, etc. all of which are completely different vibes which correlate to different styles of vintage clothing
I think the biggest difference between mens and womens is the style, the popular vintage styles of the mens are still popular in a sense where as a lot of womens vintage is more feminine and sized alot smaller and therefore not as popular
I would say the scope of mens vintage is a lot smaller compared to womens vintage. It's all about the 30ish brands that are "in". Whereas womens fashion has been a focus societally for a lot longer allowing for a larger diversity in styles.
In my personal opinion, vintage fashion differences between men and womens is that men tend to lean on popularity of a certain vintage style rather than in women, they are more free style , more sophisticated and unique to match up the fits. Women not so focused on the expensive vintages its just they are more focus just having fun matching up styles.
I’m setting this example back in the 80s, fashion was characterized by bold colors, oversized silhouettes, and exaggerated styles. Women’s fashion included shoulder pads, neon colors, leggings, and big hairdos. Men’s fashion featured power suits with broad shoulders, acid-washed jeans, bomber jackets, and sneakers like Nike Air Force 1s. In the 90s, fashion took a more minimalist approach, with grunge and streetwear influences. Women’s fashion included high-waisted jeans, crop tops, slip dresses, and combat boots. Men’s fashion embraced baggy jeans, oversized t-shirts, flannel shirts, and sneakers like Air Jordans. Overall, while both decades had their own distinctive styles, the 80s were characterized by boldness and excess, whereas the 90s favored a more laid-back and minimalist aesthetic. Now at present time these styles can now be worn by all genders no matter the age group, also the type of music will also dictate what kind of vintage clothing you’re after. There will always be some form of stigma that lurks in the shadow but wear what you feel like, coming from me a 40 year old dad.
Great episode! I hope there'll be more podcast-ish videos interviewing other store owners and threads enthusiasts in the city! The biggest difference between men's and women's vintage, in my opinion, is the variety of the cuts and styles of garments available to us. While there are a lot more style options for women, oftentimes, for men, it falls under a select few archetypes. And to Grace's point, as someone who occasionally dabble in women clothing (pause.), there really isn't a standardize sizing for the girlies, especially when you get into vintage garments 20+ years old! Fun interview, keep it up Tom!
I think the biggest difference between men’s and women’s vintage is what grace said in the video: men are more attracted to brand names and labels versus women who are attracted to the shape and colour of an item. Therefore a women’s vintage shop will focus more on the item itself instead of label (excluding poor quality brands of course like fast fashion), where a men’s vintage store will have to carry certain brands if they want to cater to a wide variety of men.
I find woman’s vintage is obviously more feminine- Sizing and style which is great for the ladies that wear that. I just personally prefer the men’s vintage- More oversized fit and style! But will definitely check out Grace’s shop, she definitely sounds like she knows what she’s doing!
The biggest difference for me is that currently, men’s vintage pieces are a lot more brand oriented. This is probably because it focuses on usually a celebrity influence. For an example, Playboi Carti wearing Pelle Pelle has made a lot of guys search for 90s Pelle pelle pieces. For women, it seems like it’s more so fitting specific aesthetics rather than the importance of the brand.
