She was born Rose Melba Ponzillo in Meriden, Connecticut, the youngest of three children. Her parents were Italian Neapolitan immigrants. Rosa had an exceptionally mature voice at an early age and, at least in her early years, sang on natural endowment with little, if any, vocal training. She sang in movie houses and cafes in Meriden and at church, and she soon became well-known locally for her exceptionally beautiful voice. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut on 1918, as Leonora, opposite Caruso. The following recordings best demonstrate the various aspects of Ponselle's voice: -range, timbre, pianissimo:"Suicidio!" -trill and coloratura: "Ernani, involami" and "Mercè, diletti amiche" ("Bolero") -legato: "Tu che invoco" and "O nume tutelar" -dynamic control and messa di voce: "Pace, pace, mio Dio" Ponselle died at the Villa Pace near Baltimore, Maryland on May 25, 1981. /

I can think of no finer recording of a soprano than this. Such grandeur of line and tone, yet exquisitely shaded. It makes me want to weep when I think of what we usually hear now. Surely things must improve soon!
Exquisite! I never listened to Ponselle's "home" recordings, afraid that like Melba and Patti, it would show a sad decline from former greatness. Boy, was I wrong! Now I need to find the rest of her recordings from those sessions!
This was, I think, the first classical song I can remember. I must have been about eight years old and it was sung in a school music competition. The words were very different, not romantic: Lonely woods, with paths dim and silent, a haunt of peace for weary hearted, there’s healing in her wings (or something like that). The song stuck with me from that time - I must have somehow already known that woods would be my greatest solace in adult life. Wish I could find a recording with those words, but this is wonderful.
The ultimate rendition....yes, Pavarotti, Corelli and Domingo were impressive in their vocal power....but Schipa was a true " tenore di grazie" impeccable diction and nuance.
Inoubliable Tino Rossi!
To my ear, this is the single greatest instrument ever to be issued to a woman in recorded history. One could criticize her style or her pronunciation or the fact that she had a "short" top. But the voice itself is a once in a century phenomenon.
Amelita had apparently a tiny sweet voice, but this voice was able to penetrate each and every space in a concert hall. She was amazing. Than you so much for this post❤
