DIY boat projects like fiberglass and gelcoat application and repair, installing and sealing new boat windows, marine diesel maintenance and repair, applying nonskid surface for safety, teak deck repair, solar and wind power setup, power inverters and solar and wind controllers, lithium iron phosphate house battery bank charging and setup, lead acid starter battery charging and setup, marine electrical and electronics installations and more.
I don't have that problem because my boat has a deep keel and the intake is several feet above the bottom of my keel so sand is not a problem but anything floating in the water can be.
You don’t need to put it in gear, you can certainly run it in neutral to flush it out. You probably do more damage by putting a load on a cold engine than flushing it in idle. Just my opinion!

I have a 4-108. The oil pump is on a hose that I can pull out into the cabin while pumping into a container. Also find yourself a silicone container used in cooking to place under the oil filter to catch the oil that escapes when removing the filter. It’s recommended to pre fill the filter before placing it on the bracket, but it’s not really necessary. When you start the engine after the change, advance the throttle about half way. Start the engine and it only takes the a second or two for the oil pressure gauge to respond. Also you should put a quart of Lucas oil in with every change. According to the manual the engine takes 4.7 quarts after an oil change, so adding 4 quarts of oil and a quart of Lucas oil fills it slightly more. But doesn’t hurt the engine.
Have you researched waste oil drip stoves? I use one in my pigpen and it runs for 8 hours on 4-5 gallons. Something that small could run for quite a while on a gallon. Most liquid fuels should work
Maybe a 4 or 5 inch Silicone cake pan would work better. They are pliable, so can be folded to fit in the port hole, and can tolerate high temperatures. Checked on line: "Silicone 5 Inch Cake Pan Round, Set of 4" for $12. "Silicone 4 Inch Cake Pan Round, Set of 4" for $10.

Hey Thomas! Good episode, chimney maintenance is often overlooked but very important. I spent 42 winters in New Hampshire and I learned a bit. Excessive soot build up in the chimney is usually the result of unburnt fuel. Fuel to oxygen ratio is a good start , increase the air flow or decrease the rate of fuel feed should show a better burn rate. A damper plate before the exhaust exits the side of the stove might be in order. Try for good air flow with minimum fuel feed, see how that works. Good luck my friend.

It would be a lot easier if you melt the Crisco in a large glass measuring cup in the microwave, then pour it into the can and let it solidify. That's what I do when I'm making candles. It's very easy that way and you don't get empty spaces in it the way you do when you're spooning it into the can.
Yes, I have burned coal but like wood I have to deal with ash and dust and a little dirty to handle, but it burns well. One good thing about liquid fuel is that it is low maintenance. Thanks for watching.
you can use just used cooking oil filtered of course drill hole aroumd the inside can so the carbon can absorb the oil only problem should be getting it to ignite and you could use rubbing alcohol in a dropper and drip it on the carbon fiber to start it but used veg oil burns hotenjoyed the video and hello from Tennessee
I really like your content. I am concerned about your magnets. They stop working when they get hot. The inside of a stove is not good place for them. They will fail to work for you when you need them most.
Great idea👍When drilling stainless steel try irrigating the point where the bit touches the metal with water. Use a spray pump bottle to keep the metal cool, drill bit sharp and you can drill at higher speeds.
Maybe get the cans with no seem on the bottom , they only have the seem on the top with the pull tab too open , the seemed bottomed tins should only be heated up in a sauce pan with water around the tin to stop it heating up too much you can get some fare sized tins made that way now I'm thinking . look up prospector stoves, we use them in remote mining exploration to heat tents. Basically its a flaming garbage can that has a slow diesel drip from a Toby carburettor. All you would need is a carb on the side of the stove, and a copper pipe feeding into the stove body and a diesel tank with a gravity feed. we've run these stoves for weeks on end with almost no maintenance, and one job where I was in the arctic we ran them non-stop for 5 weeks and went through only 2 45 G drums of diesel.
Would methylated spirits be a safer fuel ? Easier to put out if spilt when burning ? From my experience kero isn't safe enough , harder to put out when split ? Metho burns its self out a lot of the time with out damaging to much ?
@@stormsail I like those kerosene cooker even less , a fire waiting too happen and the oily kerosene , under pressure as well is hard to put out and spreads from every splash and drop burning long enough catch hold and carry-on burning ? Cheers thanks again for your videos and your reply .
Our boat was built in the Ta Shing Yard and we have the same latches minus the key holes and I too have fell victom to the belt loop...more than once ;) Luckily I have been able to get off. I feel you!
Do you recommend not mixing sand? I think I want to sprinkle on fresh gelcoat, brush off after dry and apply a final coat of gelcoat. Did you use course? I think I want fine. Thanks for the info.
I don't recommend sand because it wont expand and contract with temperature change and it can cause the gelcoat to crack. Use Soft Sand It's rubber beads. You can buy it on line. I mixed mine in the gelcoat or you can apply the gelcoat then sprinkle it on and brush the excess off after the gelcoat drys. I used coarse Soft Sand.
Cool stove! You did a nice job on that and a great repurpose of materials! I plan on putting mine in that same spot. Do you run into issues with the main sheet getting tangled up on the stove pipe? Soot on the mainsail? I was going to angle my stovepipe over to the port side a little more, but still within the angle of the the boom crutch support post, to keep it out of the way of the main sheet. It's hard to visualize without all that hardware on the boat yet, but I would like to figure out where I'm going to put the chimney so I can incorporate it into the deck design before I fiberglass everything. I'll probably need to get my stove soon to do that... I'm going to use the Dickinson Lofoten diesel stove. That way I'll have heat AND an alternate cooktop if needed. I did make a quick update/proof of life video finally. I'll get some better ones up eventually
Thank You for your video update. WOW your boat looks great. When I fiber-glassed the cabin I took five days off from work and thought I would have it done in five days, It took five years. Big difference between thinking about it and actually doing it. Yes my stovepipe is in the way of my main sheet but I can remove it and I have a cap for it. I'm going to build a Bimini with solar panels and I plan to move the main sheet back. My stove burns real clean like a rocket stove so I don't get much soot. Please make more videos and Thank You for throwing my channel a bone.
