They are so precious…this made me cry. We had to say goodbye to our 11 year old Golden, Sophie aka Jiggles aka Old Snout aka the Snoutiest Snout of all Snouts last week. She was the sweetest, goofiest dog, always made me laugh, always had to bring you one of her toys, would bitch me out when I got home from work to get her a treat & always leave a drool pool by the kitchen table when we would eat. I miss her dreadfully 🥲 I’ll never forget the joy she brought to our lives.
"Golden retrievers are not bred to be guard dogs, and considering the size of their hearts and their irrepressible joy in life, they are less likely to bite than to bark, less likely to bark than to lick a hand in greeting. In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go!" and lead them on a great adventure." ~ Dean Koontz
I can't remember who the people were now but when the mother came home the dog was shaking with excitement that he would pee on everything so he remained a yard dog. Seems like it was a golden retriever.
The reason seems pretty simple. Mom is more enthusiastic and loving in her greeting of the dog, and the dog is responding to that. Over time this becomes a reinforced pattern. The dog knows the dad's greeting is going to be rather indifferent, and not so loving and so, too, is the dog's.
