Im 40 yrs old now and this is the only MLB game I ever went to. I'm from east TN and it was our seasons end "pizza party" equivalent for our little league team. I found it by remembering the Gant Smoltz lead off HR in 96. Appreciate this video greatly. Should be in right field stands somewhere 😊
This specific game and moment is one of my all-time favs in a history of watching sports. Doesn't matter what happened in Game 7. Hell, I'm not a fan of either team even, I just like baseball! It's just because I said to my friend after two outs (we were cheering for the Cards this particular night) "we just need Eckstein to do some Eckstein thing, then we have Edmonds, a great .OBP guy, then if that can happen we have a CHANCE with one of the greatest of all time." I truly did say that. Out loud. And then Eckstein got the most Ecksteiny soft grounder single one can imagine. And Edmonds stepped up. And even he made it hard; how do you lean away from that 1-1 pitch? Step right into it my man!! But anyway, true to form, the magnificent Jim Edmonds drew a walk. And up came Albert Pujols. One of the very truly greatest players in the 130 year history of professional baseball. And proceeded to hit a ball that will live forever in my memory. Forever. And I have seen a lot of baseball and a lot of sports. Again, they lost the series? Who cares. Then the White Sox swept the Astros. Water under the bridge. In 50 years we won't even remember who beat who in the 2005 World Series. But we'll always remember this moment! Always.
I was at this game live, me & my Dad went down to field level & watched Ozzie drive Willie in, & I'll never forget him hitting his last Homer of his career that day, & witnessin it!
22 years ago today Saturday June 8th 2002 my first time seeing the Cardinals ever on the road outside of Busch Stadium. Great game and rewatching this today Saturday June 8th 2024. 32:17, 1:15:28, 2:21:35
I still wonder how this game would have gone for Ankiel if Matheny hadn’t gotten hurt right before the playoffs. It probably would have been a much more comfortable win for the Cardinals, assuming they still score those 6 runs in the risk inning. This game made me nervous towards the end because the Braves had been there before, while the Cardinals weren’t in the playoffs since 1996. If the Cardinals had not won this game, I don’t believe they would have won the series.
Felipe Alou was good in 2003, but between 2004-2006, he lost his steam, and the game probably passed him by at that point. He was having issues communicating with his players and he was also kind of known for falling asleep in the dugout. It was unfortunate Dusty wasn't still the Giants manager at that time, despite the way the Giants lost the 2002 World Series. Dusty was the fall guy for that World Series in a way. I have no doubt Dusty would've returned as the Giants manager in 2003, if the Giants would've won the World Series in 2002. Looking back at it now, it's kind of too bad the Giants just didn't go from Dusty to Bochy. Yes, at the time it was nice to have Felipe Alou back in the Giants organization, but he wasn't the same manager with the Giants as he was with the Expos. The Giants probably should've stuck with Dusty for a couple of more years or until 2006, and then maybe make the switch to Bochy like they ended up doing in 2007 going from Alou to Bochy.
Also, when I think of the 2004 Giants, I always think of how Vlad Sr. should've been on that team. There were conflicting reports that he wanted to play for Felipe Alou again, but then I heard reports that he didn't. Not sure which was true, but it would've been cool to have Vlad Sr hit behind Bonds for a few years to end the Bonds era. Having Vlad Sr here also would've made the transition from the Bonds era to the championship era last decade, a little easier. Vlad Sr's years with the Angels felt like a waste because he didn't win nothing there. Yeah, the Angels had playoff teams, but they never reached a World Series with Vlad Sr there. Yeah, that may have been the case if he came to the Giants around that time as the Giants had some lean years in the mid-late 2000's, and yes, as you alluded to, they had a terrible bullpen back then, but a middle of the lineup with 04-07 Bonds and a prime Vlad Sr. would've definitely kept the Giants at the very least in playoff contention.
This comeback doesn’t happen often, but this game is proof that no matter the score, a game isn’t over until it’s over. You still have to keep piling on because no lead is safe. I would have thought this game was over when it was 9-0, but there is no time limit in baseball.
Many many nights, evenings and riding in the family van...My Daddy always had the radio on the Cardinals and to hear that raspy voice along with Mike Shannon(RIP)...Miss you both dearly....GO CARDINALS!!!!!!...
Its crazy to me the Mets with that top 6 in the lineup lost this series… reyes, lo duca, beltran, delgado, green? Good lord… I’d take that lineup everyday. Kudos to Stl bullpen in this series!
I'd be pissed, too, because it's almost 20 years later and Edmonds' ball still hasn't landed yet. What a shot. Damn thing almost hit the Sears Tower antenna!
2:03:10 That was clearly a middle-middle strike, it should have been strike 3, WOW!!! It was obviously a bad pitch with the count 0-2 since you dont wanna throw a cookie down the middle, but it was still strike 3 But I guess since the pitcher missed his location badly, and it fooled the umpire as well
This was also an important game for the Padres, as they were also trying to make the postseason this final week, chasing off both the Dodgers and Phillies. So the Padres were not just playing this game against the Cards to be spoilers
After the Mets offense put on a show in game 4, after getting shutout in game 3 by Suppan, I remembered that me and many Mets fans were feeling very confident in this game 5 with Glavine starting (who pitched great in game 1 against the Cards and pitched great in game 1 against the Dodgers), and we were facing a vulnerable Weaver (whom the Mets offense barely hit thanks to a Beltran late inning home run in game 1). But Weaver once again pitched nicely in this game 5, like he did in game 1. Mets get Glavine a two-run-lead in the top of the fourth inning. But then Glavine gives those two runs right back in the bottom of the 4th inning. And then the Cards took the lead again in the 5th inning and never looked back. What I remembered about this game 5 also was that the Cardinals had ANOTHER TRIPLE in this NLCS. I mean, triples is one of the Mets specialties, not the slow-running-Cards. In game 2, the Cards Spiezio hit a triple off Mota (im sure we all remember that at-bat). In game 3, Spiezio had another triple. In game 4, Juan Encarnacion had a triple. In game 5, Aaron Miles had a triple. The Mets then were making a rally in the 8th inning, as they were down by 2 runs with one out and runners on second and third, but then Shawn Green hit a fly ball out that wasnt deep enough, and then Wainwright came in to face Valentin with two outs and Wainwright struck out Valentin looking on a curveball to end the inning and the rally (signs of things to come in game 7)
Amazing how Lidge was never the same pitcher ever since the 2005 postseason started. Many point to the Pujols home run, but he was struggling earlier in that postseason as well. 2:17:32 And Pujols almost hit another game winning 3 run home run off Lidge in this game, WOW Lidge was just lost from the beginning of the 2005 postseason until the end of the 2007 regular season. I mean, its not like he lost his velocity (he was throwing in the upper 90s in this game)
