Sometimes you just need some dude to explain it to you. I’m that dude. Annnnd….before you get big mad, I’d say the converse if I were a woman as well; I’m simply not a chick. This channel could just as easily be called “womansplained” or “ladyboss_knowledge” but alas, fate had other plans for me…a pen*s. C’est la vie.

Great lessons. I bought one like this yesterday. It kicks back very hard when cranking. I’m going to try adjusting the timing.

These videos on the jumbo are for the first time owner of a jumbo,but,much is left out.Close ups are too close as we need to see where a part is while another part is where it belongs.Where does the center gear mesh with the crank gear?Please show the flywheel with engine off,then show where the cam gear belongs on the flywheel gear.I need the mag to click when it needs to AND the exhaust needs to open at 35 deg after the explosion and needs to close at the right time and mine wont do all three things when they should,so,its most important to show where cam gear meshes with flywheel gear.thanks!

i have been trying for 3 years to get mine running,no one in wisc knows how to work on these so a reply would be helpful,Thanks,great engine-wish mine ran like that.

I am a total newb to hit/miss so I have a stupid question. What way do you turn it off? Power interrupted or fuel sut off?
@DwayneHaskell
@DwayneHaskell 4 года назад
You can turn them off a few ways. 1. You can hold that latch in that he pointed out which will cause it to not fire and it will eventually die. This isn't the preferred method because you get your hands pretty close to the moving flywheel and other parts. 2. You can turn the mixer knob on the carb to turn off the fuel. 3. See the silver button on the side of the magneto (the black box with the spark plug wire protruding from it)? You push that in and it grounds the magneto so there is no spark. You hold it in until the engine stops.

soo... how does the ignition coil get charged by the magneto? is it a traditional points and condenser setup? where is the magneto and how does it work?

This does in no way explain the working principle of a hit and miss. Merely the working of a four stroke engine !
@RCHobbyReviews
@RCHobbyReviews 10 лет назад
There is actually a difference between a mixer and carb. A carb has a bowl that stores gas and a mixer just mixes the air and fuel. It doesn't store any gas. And as others have said, since this is a hit and miss engine it only fires when it gets to the idle set and fires. Other newer style hit every 4 or 2 strokes.

This is a hopper cooled engine, so yes. The hopper is an extension of the water jacket, and this engine cools itself by boiling the water. Care must be taken when adding more to a hot engine to add it slowly or the cylinder might crack. Oiling is done using the drip cup on top, it runs through a tube to the cylinder and drips onto the back of the piston. From there it is free to be smeared along the cylinder walls, while a small hole in the piston allows some to fall through to the wrist pin.

bcuz If u see theres no mechanical connection to the intake valve only the exhaust valve so.... if the engine is not under load..... it wont need or make more power.

Nice video, thanks very much. I would like to ask a couple of questions tho. How is the piston being lubricated? and is the tank on the top of the engine the water jacket?

Whats the box over the cylinder that's full of fluid? I'm guessing it's the cooling. I know engines, but not much about hit & miss engines, and I've enjoyed these few videos. Thanks!

Can you explain where the timing marks are on the motor to time it? Does the cam gear line up with the keyway on the crank? I recently started working on this same exact engine and everything was froze up or rusted off. Can you please let me know. I check back later for a post.
@user-ic1pm6uo7w
@user-ic1pm6uo7w 8 лет назад
there are no timing marks.. engine speed controls ignition timing and exhaust/intake timing
@renegadeoflife87
@renegadeoflife87 11 лет назад
There's no load on it. These engines only fire when they need to increase their speed, and without a load the engine is able to coast for a while between each hit. This method of regulating speed was popular before carburetors that could be throttled were developed, as the fuel mixture can then be set correctly for full throttle and it simply doesn't take a charge until it has coasted enough to need to speed up again.

The diesel doesn't push on the way up. It's all steam power up the mountains. The only reason the diesel is there is because the people in WV keep bitching over the smoke 734 makes. So when they reach Frostburg, they stop stoking the steam engine's fire and coast down the mountains. The diesel is just there to provide braking power.

That's how it regulates it's speed. Simple and elegant, and as point of fact highly fuel-efficient. These engines only draw a charge and ignite it when they need to increase their speed, the rest of the time it latches the exhaust open and sits there letting the flywheels spin. I have one just like it in my garage, Nelson Bros. Model T "Little Jumbo". Produces 1 3/4 horsepower at 500 RPM. Only difference is mine lacks the speed knob, and has a valve adjustment.

What makes it take so long before it goes through another intake cycle. I see that they engine nearly stops and the exhaust port is open the entire time, and then there will be an intake cycle and the fuel is pulled in. Why is that?

Good general description of how an IC engine works.However, the thing that makes that beauty special is it being a 'Hit-N-Miss' engine.The centrifugal regulator and how it governs the engine,through keeping a valve open when the engine is at speed,only to fire it off again when it drops below speed,or under a load is what's beautiful about it! You did a top-notch job getting that baby 'up to speed'(Pun absolutely intended.)Thanks for the cool video. Hopefully we can get kids to WANT to learn!
@renegadeoflife87
@renegadeoflife87 12 лет назад
I like how yours has the little flip lever on the magneto arm to change the timing of it. When I start mine I usually hold the governor in until I have some speed in the wheels before letting it try to hit, that way I don't come up on compression too slowly and have it hit backwards. Although yours is the same make and model as mine, the engine I have lacks the knob to adjust the governor.

Its called a steam chest.. and it's not a high and low pressure cylinder..the top cylinder just directs the pressure to each side of the piston. Also, the rod connecting to the piston valve is the valve connect rod...not the eccentric rod. Eccentric rod connects the eccentric crack to the gear connect rod. Lastly, he doesn't dump the ash pan while running down the road lol. Where did you learn this stuff??
