Hint: Unless you're playing as a Ranger/Barbarian and quickly level in order to get their +3 class bonuses to initiative, there is no feat more important than Alert in Honor mode which basically guarantees you go first except maybe in a handful of battles. The way you died to spider is exactly why. 1. Battle begins. 2. Roll for initiative. 3. Dead. <- That SUCKS!!! With Alert that can basically never happen. Any time you screw up in any way at the start of combat, you are the first to act and you can easily run away and try again. Every time you got into battle with the hag and she split up with her illusions, ruining your Barrel-mancy, that can NEVER happen if you have Alert. Each time that happened instead of restarting, wasting potions, scrolls and time, you could have simply arranged the barrels, walked back, exploded them and won, with no hassle. For ANYONE trying honor mode and not having done it yet, for your sanity, just pick Alert first. I know Sharpshooter and Tawern Brawler are examples of what really get's your build going. So? Do you want to survive up to that point or not? If you want to live to level 6-8 when things become easier, then pick Alert first and by then (lv8 or 6 as a fighter), you have another feat and you're good to go or potentially +3 from your class and maybe a few +1 from items here and there. PS. Really important mechanic which makes Alert even more OP. BG3, unlike D&D does not roll for initiative with a d20, but with a d6 or d4 I believe. That means a +5 or even a +3 bonus is HUGE. Absolutely massive. I repeat. For HONOR mode, to almost guarantee you ALWAYS go first in EVERY single battle is probably the most important thing for surviving, REGARDLESS of your build.

Your example of an open world game is …Starfield? Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Witcher, Elden Ring, Zelda, Red Dead, MSGV, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, GTA…. These are open world titles done right.
I’ve heard that starfield is intended to be empty in places to give a sense of scale and show that not everywhere is full and busy. However if you do not like that they are empty in places that’s fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what a good game is. Note that this is something I’ve heard and I’m working off the memory of that video so I may not be correct on those points.
