I remember my grampa talking about him,,,didn't he die after getting drunk and riding his motorcycle 120 ...then stood on the handle bars or something? People said,,,"hey, isn't that larry", as he went by standing on the handlebars, no helmet, beer in his hand, then the obvious happened.
This is so cool. One thing I find funny, I have Harley quarts of oil in my garage, think nothing of it, it's just the oil recommended to use for my bike. But 68 yrs from now, people may be looking at my bike and going "oh wow he still has the oil in the old timey black plastic bottles!!" lol
the frame has been stamped as repaired by HD, with welds like that i'd guess it was under a shade tree job. also, why would the factory go to the trouble of tapering down the tube, mounting the piece in a lathe, turning down then doing a shonky weld job all = $ + when that weld fails. that's my opinion and we all know about opinions, they're like *holes, everyone has one. Good thought provoking and educational vid' thanks.
i only found out what those stamped numbers meant the day before yesterday, coincidence. I wonder if HD still hold the records of what repairs were carried out?.
Absolutely a top quality museum piece , top shelf , what a beauty , thank you for such an in depth , and sensual walk through . This is my favorite so far . I'd love to see one on a 63 machine , just because of my birth year . Thanks for sharing , again absolutely the best so far .
John D knew that bike would out live him. thats why he did what he did. Hopefully that panhead will stay that way for hundreds of years. PANHEADS FOREVER.
Absolutely gorgeous!!! And I learned something, too, about special factory colors. Just curious: Would you happen to know what the special paint would have cost back in 1955?
A bike in that condition with all the extras , after climate being kept all these years in a climate controlled environment . Being rubbed with oily fingers out in the snowy environment . Clowns !!!
If it was previously brazed welding in it would be difficult. May take a few passes to burn the bronze out. Hence the shit welds. Or the guy was just terrible as you say.
