Interesting observation, i've noticed a nearly identical sort of mechanical formation with a chainmail Box Chain weave with too small of rings. The box chain turns into more of a rectangle because of the too tight rings however starting at either end you can press into the edge ring to cause a shift which switches which side is the longer side of the rectangle.
I'd love to do that as well, you're absolutely right. Unfortunately it's hard to coordinate across continents and with our relatively busy schedules. One day...
