The island held political and religious dominance in a vast region including the Society Islands, Tuamotu islands, Austral Islands, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Rotuma and possibly Hawaii. Every year, representatives of these islands would come to the Taputapuatea temple (or marae) in Raiatea to share their knowledge and skills. As the cradle of Eastern Polynesian civilization the island was highly respected and had a higher social status than any other island.

I'm Tahitian. I believe the early migration came from the west (fiji, samoa (lapita), tonga) before our Tupunas reached our islands. So we descend from these islands. We have a common history. It all goes back to "Hawaiki Nui," (the island of the Creation where we "Te Ao Maohi" shall all return). From there, Hawaii, Maori (nz) came to be. You'll have to consult your oral history to see what your Tupunas say. Due to colonization we were separated, our old beliefs were replaced with Christianity. Due to isolation, clans started to interpret our common legends their own way. We see that with the Maori. We have almost the same stories but twisted differently due to family traditions. One day we shall regain our cultural identity.

Also the Tahitian cosmogony started with the cult of Oro (the god of war), a cult from Rai'atea revered by the Tamatoa dynasty. 1500-1700AD. This is where this tradition comes from probably a later development that never reached your region (tonga, Samoa). There was a guild that was maintaining this cult inter regionally called the "Ari'oi" society. If your Tupunas never heard of them they've probably never reached your islands. It's important to know where we come from.

Rarotonga use to be called Tumutevarovaro to Avaiki Raro and now Rarotonga.

Aotearoa is also known as Hawaiki tahutahu

And why is it that Pora Pora was changed fromnits original name Vava'u. Many of those islands have original Tongan or Samoan names
