Nourishing a peculiar fascination with mystifying music through pretentious video essays. Because there's always something behind the tags, and we're here to find out exactly what that is. Follow along this highly stylized journey. Covering internet micro-genres, controversial outsiders, and whatever else tickles your fancy.
Hi, my name is Valentina, and yes, the title is a pun on sex and the city. My favorite band is My Bloody Valentine, and you're right, I have been influenced by Adam Curtis. I think about Rate Your Music too much.
I think generative music deserves to be on a lower tiers of this list. Lots of generative artists today use elements of aleatoric music. Bohdan Stupak, Mat Ball, Kenneth Kirschner & Joseph Branciforte, Guy Birkin to name a few.
dor anyone who doesnt know about zenjin he was believed to be part of a collective on the dark web that made gore and cp compilations it is not confirmed but speculated. he made an album called pseudoscorpion wich was a concept album about a girl being m****ted by her father. every song samples cp and the last song samples one of the worst cp videos (if not the worst) audio. the cover art and some audio clips can be found on youtube
I would put Cannibal Corpse and Ice Nine Kills aswell in tier 1 and Carcass and Venom in tier 2. Cannibal Corpse were probably the first American metal band to write about the form of gore they do, with lyrics all about various forms of death, some including sexual violence, and the album covers drawn by horror comic artist Vince Locke depicting cartoonish yet disturbing scenes. Their songs got the rise out of US senators and even got shamed at a presidential campaign of Bob Dole, their first 3 albums got banned in Germany until recently and all their albums have censored versions of the artworks in Australia. Ice Nine Kills is simply a horror movie themed metalcore band, not too shocking but very interesting. Venom pretty much invented extreme metal and specifically black metal, the first band to abandon melody in their vocals and the first to outright claim they're satanists at a time when all other bands denied any form of real satanism. Carcass invented the genre of Goregrind, they tuned down to what became Baritone tuning as a joke at first, on their first two albums they played at extremely fast tempos, used pitch shifters to create inhuman sounding vocals before it became a staple of the genre, and their artworks were collages of human and animal corpses taken straight out of medical books, while actually being all vegan and using it to spread messages about animal rights. They did eventually abandon this whole genre they created and became even more well known for their melodic death metal album Heartwork
I don’t know if it’s really justified to put Metallica’s Battery on here because a murderer listened to it several decades after it was released. If we counted any song as being “Disturbing” because a disturbed person listened to it then there’d be a hell of a lot more songs on this list.
I have successfully ranked every song on this iceberg (albeit one per artist and disqualifying War Torn Limbs which would have ranked in the 70s otherwise) You'll never guess which one is my favorite, but I'll post my rankings if anyone is curious
Wonderful doc- thanks so much for this! Anyone know where the live footage of United States of America is from with Dorothy Moskowitz singing? Can't find that anywhere at all and would love to show it to her if the full clip is out there somewhere!
why this asmr narrator voice btw? it is kind of annoying... otherwise great thanks for the doc, will like but I don't get why you have a narrator sounding like something from an asmr video, its uncomfortably unwanted intimacy that gives me shivers in a bad way
our paths crossed once. I'm sure in Sensatateria, 1988, Her interest in the occult , and playing with memories, fascinated me, As a teen playing with ,and using the occult, to summon up memories. R.I.P. Broadcast's Trish Keenan,
This list is beyond bad, an iceberg that contains disturbing shock artists and you don't include Nattefrost (who has songs like "preteen deathfuck"), Brujeria (mexican narco band who makes songs glorifying cartels and even post pictures of sevettrd heads and body parts on RU-vid) and varg vikernes? Rookie mistake.
I would’ve put the album Deceit by This Heat on this list. Terrifying, hypnotic and almost ritualistic instrumentals that are topped with lyrics about the world meeting its end due to nuclear warfare
27:14 Klaus nomi was absolutely brilliant…the world was just starting to really see that, but we never got to see him go further…died of aids In the early 80s The costume he’s wearing, was made for him by the tailor who crafted a very similar design, for David Bowie‘s SNL appearance. Klaus and Joey Arias were actually the backup vocals for that performance. (The man who sold the world) His music was very Avantgarde and to appreciate it one has to have an open mind. If you’re up for it- watch the documentary/movie „The Nomi Song“
You could choose any number of videos by The Wildhearts here. If Life Is Like a Lovebank, Let It Go and Sleepaway are all pretty rough. Though I'd probably go with Destroy All Monsters, which is really quite nasty. Props to Ginger Wildheart too, for the excellent, disturbing, thought provoking video for "Don't Lose Your Tail, Girl", which is a must-watch, but has been well and truly banned from RU-vid, and not for the easily shocked.
PLEASE talk normally. You have a great voice, the forced intonation and pitch up is very apparent, grating and isn’t necessary. It would be easier , and sounds better for you to speak in your normal voice.
Incredible video!! Would have loved to see some of the satanic 90s Memphis based hip hop/Detroit based horrorcore, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Cannibal Corpse, maybe even Viper ya dig ?! 𖤐(༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ)𖤐 FUN FACT: Skin Graft is married to my cousin haha
Some of my favourite albums, many of these are also beautiful (Coil, Lustmord, Puce Mary, Nico). I don't really have much time for the metal related material myself (with exception of Sunn o))) ) but the arty farty stuff here is great- Scott Walker, Atrax Morgue, This Heat, Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nurse With Wound, Di6 etc🎉🥳
I love the meat shits, the infamous live performance is on their album “let there be Shit” wich is a must listen for grind fans. Also nowadays they’re more death metal oriented than noisecore or grind.
