Spaces such as the one depicted in the video are converted from large commercial spaces. No residents were pushed out. Almost all of the buildings in that area of Sunset Park along 3rd and 2nd Avenues are industrial buildings that are not residential, and even currently some buildings are entirely unrented or vacant. My counter argument would be that the artists who rent these spaces to work and make their living contribute financially to the community by supporting the local industries and businesses. On top of that, people who make their living in arts or creative industries desperately need affordable space since there are very few spaces left in New York where serious creative work can be done at a rental price that is not prohibitive for most artists. I myself have lived in Brooklyn many years and having walked and driven by this area many times, it's been mostly a struggling area populated mostly by struggling bodegas and adult video stores, so this new influx of creativity and economy are needed, in my opinion. No, I don't want to see a Starbucks or Walgreens go up, or anything that would change the flavor of this unique neighborhood, but I do want to see it thrive. But if you have an opposing view, we are always open to hear it.

The fact that you drive through this neighborhood and see only "struggling" bodegas and adult video stores is an indication of your own ignorance, not the state of this community. It's exactly this pretentious manifest destiny-like idea where in you need to save an uncultured neighborhood from itself that draws such hatred. Most importantly it is under this guise of bringing "culture" to a place perceived as desolate without it that gentrification occurs; the only people who benefit are the suburban transplants who push out diversity and bring high priced condos. But you're right, the real victims in all of this are artists.
