Thank you - I have a 1966 wheel horse 856 and muffler is getting red hot and throwing some flames. Going to adjust valves this weekend and check points. Engine was rebuilt like 37 years ago lol.
6:03 can someone explain me about locking the nuts together, the manual didn’t say mucho about actual procedure valve adjustment, and other videos don’t mention anything about tightening those nuts together

Use the lesser clearance is for a valve that have been ran for a while, and use the greater clearance for a fresh reground valve face and seat (As the valve and seat wear into each other, the clearance will be lessened over time.)
Turn engine until one valve is pushed up, spring is compressed - - - - Then the other Valve is down and go adjust it !!!! Now turn engine until the other spring is pushed up - - - - now the other Valve is ready for you to Adjust it !!!!! This is one way to do it !!!! When ever one valve is wide open the other one has got to be fully closed !!

picked a 1076 with k241 10hp and it loses power going up hill or pulling anything....was wondering if it is the governor...starts runs fine...this is the only problem this thing has for being 56 years old

You dont mess around, good job! Heads have plugs in all angles & hell once a rubber boots on nobody will notice crooked anyways..lol Not in a tight spot like cars now there we need it straight. In a deep hole the plug socket drags down inside on one side and it can break a plugs ceramic/tip off like a rubber plug gets sideways in plug sockets can. Non foul tips keep plugs out of the hole to keep oil fouling down on plugs they run fine half out of the hole. On the old flat or L heads as long as spark enters she dont care what direction it goes in her hole, she just wants it hot...lmao I need this kit for Kohler sombody sold me cheap cause the plug was stripped, then it blew it out on him like a Ford does all theirs...lol So far I've not found anyone showing these inserts being tapped in. The finished step as they should be done? Seems they screw them in and call it quits so burrs aint seated right on most Im guessing? Some are advertised as wood kits in details too? Wth is that about? Wooden heads?..lol I better not laugh in plastic tech school 30yrs ago my book showed an entire plastic engine that ran. Not really long but it ran hours then. Plastic engineer's where just waiting for oil corps to catch up to lube them better before building any they said...lol. Junk but plastics changing...lol Peace
Great vid man ! I have a ariens lawn mower with this carb and I can’t get it off the lawnmower because there’s a long piece connected to it going in the lawnmower. Would it be a bad idea to attempt this with the carb still on ?
And the adjustments to the high speed and idle screws are.................................................................................................................................................................???
For a carb on a Kohler K161 carb it's 2 turns out for the Low side and 1 1/4 turn out on the High side. To start. Get it running and adjust low side 1st.... turn it lean until it runs rough then turn it rich until it runs rough..... settle the screw until it's in between those 2 positions. Same procedure for the high side expect have the motor at full throttle when making adjustments.

Always replace your needle valve, seat, and bowl gasket. This will keep you from doing the same job twice. Ultrasonic cleaners are the cat's meow for carb rebuilds if you can afford one. Clean everything, disassemble as needed. Most small engine carbs are essentially the same, just different sizes for the horsepower.
I'm lost on the governor adjustment. My c-120 sat for about 4 years and I got it back out to start mowing with it cause my c-141 is down. Long story short. Once I got the k301 going with fresh oil and carb cleaned and adjusted I noticed it sounded like it was revving higher than it should. So I got an old tach from a family member that read 3800rpm wide open throttle. Which as we both know is 200 rpm too high. So I had my father n law adjust it and now its at like 3200rpm which is ok I guess but once I engage the hydrostat and the deck blades the rpm drops like 1500 rpm and when i start to move or try going up a hill it just about dies. Its like it can't pick the rpm back up. I cant tell from the video what you adjusted on the governor. My father in law did all the adjusting the first round and was showing me. He said to break the clamping nut loose then put your vise grips on the shaft on the end and hold the throttle closed then break brass nut loose and turn the shaft the vise grips are on counterclockwise just alittle all while holding throttle closed. Then lock back all nuts. And that didn't help.
How do you lock them since when you hold the bottom one the top one will turn in both directions the change cleaance so I don't see how you can 'lock' them. I watched another video which said they are not locking, just adjust and leave.
hey crazy wheel horses...have a Kohler K241 on my John boy...cutting the grass on 2nd round and it went cough, spit, chugg....repeat...wouldn't stay full throttle had to back off to near idle...I shut it off, took off the carb and cleaned the main fuel needle valve good, took out both needle valves (high and idle) and cleaned those up. they didn't look too bad.took off the bowl. was sitting parallel to the carb body. gaskets all good. I used a small wire to fish it into the small holes in the throat of the carb where the butterfly for the throttle is. There are 2. They were definitely not open. I got one open with the wire coming out into the threaded hole where the idle needle goes. Question: where does the other one go?
Travis--The 2 tiny (3mm) screws holding the throttle plate to the throttle shaft of my K301 engine vibrated out. I retrieved 1 screw but the other one got on the top of the piston and smashed the spark plug electrode. I pulled the plug and ran the starter a lot. The engine sounded normal and the compression was normal (thumb). Will my engine survive?
I also run a really fine wire threw the tiny holes in the jets and carb. anywhere there is a hole i run wire threw it. all it takes is 1 stupid piece of dirt. other then that this is a great video!!
