The irony is that it is the BEST car they ever made (I have one) and its drives better than any car i have ever known. As i said to a mate, how many VT commodore do you still see on the road = 0, how many AU's do you still see?...
I've driven the 18RG and the 8RB and the 18R, the 18RG is very much a "narrow RPM" engine. It really needs to be in it's RPM range in order to have any benefit over the SOHC version. It only had 2 valves per cyl vs modern DOHC engines with 4 valves per cyl... its kicks the torque up over 1200 RPM past where the 18R torque is. So the HP numbers are misleading because HP is a formula based on torque and RPM... So the 18R is far more responsive in the middle where most of the work is done for a street engine. If you were to race on a track and spend most of the time in a narrow band of the upper RPM range, the18RG is the way to go. I was surprised when my very modified 18R beat the 18RG until I realized that it doesn't have much for mid range torque. It is an impressive looking motor, but was never a great street performer. Just dumping the smog, adding a well tuned Weber carb and you can be in the same power range with better torque in the 18R. They should have made the 18RG DOHC with 4 valves per cyl and fast runner ports for a good street engine like the BEAMS.
Yeah I agree with you entirely. The 18R is a better all-round engine. However the 18rg is a beautiful looking motor and really helped to set Toyota in motion with continuing to co-design engines with Yamaha, which eventually led to the best engines ever made(in my opinion) such as the 4age and 2jz.
I have a 1HD FT engine but the sound when it is in motion sounds like an helicopter, what could it be? Once they lowered the pressure on the pump and it seemed like the sound went down but it still sounds, what could be happening? please
Back in the late 90’s I bought an ex taxi, EA Falcon, showing 970,000 Kilos. Drove it for 7 years until a young idiot hit it and wrote it off. Pretty much the only probs I had was the power steer & steering rack leaking. Oh, and when it hit 999,999 kilos, the speedo died !
Hahahah love stores like this. Makes me so sad to think we no longer make falcons, especially when they can be a source of such rewarding motoring. Gotta try and keep the remaining ones going for as long as possible!
Davo and I have been discussing it since it happened and we reckon potentially the pump was worn before I got it. The pump didn’t show signs of major rust sitting in it, however I am certain that it must have had water sitting in it. Maybe the acidic flood juice has etched the surfaces inside the pump, further increasing pumping losses. Either way we cannot pin-point the issue, but I will admit that the flood water was probably the culprit.
I have the same engine but , I have a leak on my mechanical fuel engine pump, wondering if you guys can help me. Like if there’s a replacement for that one or I can make a mod? Thanks!
To be honest I probably bagged the looks a bit too much in the video. I actually really like the way they look. I now have 2 AU utes and a V8 Au Fairlane.
@@FULLBOAR I actually love the look, it was out of place at the time when design was still very conservative, now anything goes and if the AU came out right now it wouldn't even be noticed.
They have aged like a fine wine. The rear quarter panel from the c pillar is a work of art in my opinion. And contrary to popular opinion, I think the water-fall grille is the best one.
@@FULLBOAR Yes I absolutely and categorically agree, the waterfall grill was perfection for the overall look and design of the car, the only fault I would agree to is the stance, it could have been an inch lower, also the wheel arches could have been filled a bit more with bigger wheels or less cutout if you get what I'm on about.
I have 2 18RGUs 1 in bits because it was dead in from a donor car and the other is complete but low comp in 1 cyl. I am hoping I can make 1 good on from the 2. I also have a 18R that is mint original and running in my car currently. I thought you could use a 18R bottom end with 18RG head with some work?
Yeah potentially that is the case, however the 18RG pistons have valve reliefs whereas the 18R does not. So would be looking for a set of pistons to convert the R Tor an RG anyways. I’m gonna keep an eye out for a set.
@@FULLBOAR appreciate it you should have so many more subscribers I have a Bundy and it’s hard as seeing content for the I love you old Bundy content too
@@FULLBOAR well I’ve got a 1990 really rare rolling shell but she’s getting sold this month for a 1985 rj70 with a 302 Cleveland hopefully it can tackle the local tracks like otways and vhc
Cheers for the comment! Yeah the old 18r is a rattly little sucker but Dave has a trick up his sleeve to sort mine out. I’m not a contemporary source of info but I’m sure they weren’t too bad back in their day. Could be worse, could have been a star-fire…
Your Hilux would have come new with either the 18R-C (if sold new in Vic or NSW) or the 18R (if sold anywhere else in Australia). This was something to do with the alpine environments in those states. The 18R-C was essentially just the 18R with more pollution gear on it.
Your accent makes this so entertaining, like something surprising is about to happen at all times, ha! Cheers from the US, I'm in the same boat with an engine at the moment.
Did you give up on the Landcruiser diesel build? I myself put my B engine Build on hold .,Well i said till i built my shop , Well shop is almost Done LOL! So will be working on her again i hope "next year" Lol
Yeah sorry mate the old 40 has been put on pause. I’m keeping an eye out for a better chassis and potentially a body. Have in the mean time bought a clean FJ40.
You are right about that headliner falling down. I use tacks to keep it in place. It looks like one of those disco lights when you look up at all the silver tacks holding the headliner up. I have got to get it redone professionally I guess.
