I was 10 when these Games were on. I still remember the iconic camera work on Dick Tayler (especially the zoom in), that Jaynie Parkhouse smile in the pool, David Bedford hamming it up on the hurdles (he hid the pain well), Raelene Boyle smashing records, Graham May and his glasses face planting at the weightlifting (although that’s Tony Ebert in the video, not May), decathlete Mary Peters with the sunniest face you’ll ever see, Don Quarrie in the 100m, and Walker and Bayi both smashing the world record in the greatest ever 1500m ever raced. 😊
A great song that was played on radio so much..these Games in Ch Ch bought the country together, as a young kid into athletics I couldnt get enough of these games and live colour tv coverage, even now I can name the athletes and medals and who will ever forget Filbert Bayi & John Walker when he burst onto world stage, About a year later we visited chch and the venue and pool and it was so magical as a kid to see all this, I remeber buying a gold medal with the nznz logo of the games on it at the QE2 Pool shop after a swim...still got it..great memories thanks for sharing
I was 5 when these games were on and i remember watching it on a b&w tv back then, it is sad how mean the world has become now compaired to back in the days when i was growing up , now im 55 and getting on in life, life has become harder for alot of people these days even for myself but life goes on no matter what , to who ever reads this peace be with you and God bless you
I watch this and think how great it would be to experience something like this again. Instead we live in a world of division and deviciveness. I'm still an immensely proud Kiwi but never as much as I was watching these games as a fascinated seven year old.
When Steve Allen recorded this in 1973, in the respective video, he knelt down on the Stage, beside a young Maori girl. She was wearing a Cloak. I wonder where she is, also Steve Allen. Plus all involved in this very song: where are you now, what are you doing that's different to then, plus what of your future? From Alasdair...the curious man
May 2023 and I've stumbled across this video. Steve Allen singing a great song, along with all these images. Tony Ebert weightlifteing, Dick Taylor damned near wetting his pants with excitement, the Queen and Prince Philip, this was such a cool Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. My greatest memory though, was the HQ Holden cars they had with the Tri-Matic V8, the special wheels and the blue and white stripes. I'd sure like to have one of those now.
I was 18 yrs old, starting me first job - and then this....wow, me and me mates were just mesmerized by everything about these games. They were about excellence and friendship. I remember just about everything that was there was to remember about these games ( if I remember, I had to ring in sick a couple of times from work - yeah, horrible and selfish ). The closing was phenominal and there may have been many babies born 9 months later - and why bloody not. Great memories and NZ should be proud of the best games ever held.
I loved being a young kid back in 1974 ..Ive always felt so blessed to be born in GodsZone even though I live overseas my love for Aotearoa and everything about it will never change
I served in The Royal Scots and was part Guard to The Regimental Colors in th Finale. we met up the Tthe Girls marching Team in the sgts Mess for drinks (02:00 hrs) A great night for all.
Wrong aspect ratio!!! I hate when people post videos in the incorrect aspect ratio and expect people to watch it as if nothing is wrong. YOU CANT WATCH AND ENJOY VIDEO THAT IS SQUISHED SIDEWAYS!!!!! It would literally take two minutes to FIX AND REPOST THIS!!! And never do it again. Always make sure the aspect ratio is correct when encoding video. If you don’t know what you’re doing, get someone who does Or just DON’T post videos!!
Awesome! . I remember this ... I dedicate this to the people of ChCh and what they have been through. and it is currently the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham UK.. times have changed but the spirt of sport hasn't ..Thanks 🇳🇿❤️
This is my video and not "thisisnz". The original version is at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TJIIaMi2Hig.html with lots of great comments.
This is The Wimbledon Professional Tennis Championship (Wimbledon Pro). A one-off event, held across the August bank holiday weekend in 1967. The following year's championships became the first of the Open era.
@@cerneuffington2656 That's interesting- weren't the Wimbledon Championships in July 1967 also shot in colour for BBC2 and in 405-line B&W for BBC1? I take it they both had the same video feed that was then degraded for broadcast on BBC1? I take it this video was then from exhibition matches for BBC2 only?
@@anonUK Yes they were, Colour cameras on Centre Court only. The Wimbledon Pro was the first scheduled tennis tournament entirely in colour, introduced by David Vine. Google: Issues - BBC Programme Index, Radio Times 🙂
