Totally agree with your assessment, but They didn’t do that in the 90s and early 2000s. If you were the tallest on the team, by default you played center. Rebounds and rim protecting blocks.
I actually thought the scheme was pretty good. Kobe was more of an interior passer than a center. The half court offense ran through him when he was at the top of the key.
