I was working when the first plane struck. Ironically enough I was on duty working as a firefighter in Hamden CT. That took a little part of every firefighters soul that day. The rest is too personal. RIP friends and brothers.

I was on Operation Medina. Served with Charlie Company , 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. I got my first Purple Heart on Oct. 12, 1967 when C Co. ran up against 400 to 500 NVA. My name is Steve Kane and was the Radioman for the Arty FO team. My picture and name are mentioned throughout the award winning book by Doyl Glass, named "LIONS OF MEDINA". I remember Seymore too. He became a high ranking officer. I heard this at the re unions.

My Uncle Tim, KIA during Operation Medina- Timothy was the son of Lawrence R. Vicalvi and Betty R. Vicalvi, (my Grandparents) the dear brother or Michael Vicalvi (my Father) of Springfield Massachusetts. He enlisted in the US Marine on February 24, 1966 in Boston and arrived in Vietnam for duty on May 29, 1967 where he was assigned to and served with Company H, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, (Rein) FMF. On October 11, the 3d Marine Division launched Operation MEDINA, a mulit-battalion search and destroy effort in the Hai Lang Forest reserve NVA Base area 101 located 10.5 kilometers southwest of Quang Tri City in Quang Tri and Thua Tien Provinces of northern I Corps South Vietnam. At approximately 1345 hours on October 18, Companies G and H of the 2d Battalion, 1st Marines were approaching Hill 86 when the lead elements of Company G detonated a large mine. At the same time, Company H who had been following were engaged by the NVA with small arms fire and throwing grenades and satchel charges at the advancing men. When contact was finally broken, ten men had been killed in the action, three more would die of their wounds after evacuation. LCpl Vicalvi was one of the casualties, evacuated to the Station Hospital NSA in DaNang he died later on the same day from the fragmentation wounds he sustained by a hostile explosive device. ∼ LCpl. U.S. Marine Corps, {MC2249299}, Vietnam War-LCpl. Vicalvi was killed in action during Operation Medina on 10-18-1967 while serving as a Rifleman with Co. H of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. LCpl. Vicalvi started his tour of Vietnam on 5-29-1967.
