Preston Atkins (2005) is an American Bassoonist pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in the class of Marco Postinghel. Previously he studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Daniel Matsukawa, and the Idyllwild Arts Academy under Martin Kuuskmann. Among accolades, Preston was invited to participate at the Muri Competition (2023) and the Aeolus Competition (2024). As an orchestral musician he has toured America and Europe as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), the New York String Orchestra, and others, under conductors such as Daniel Harding, Antonio Pappano, Ion Marin, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Osmo Vänskä. He has also been a member of the chamber music residency of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, and has also appeared as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestras of La Crosse and Vancouver (USA). Did a tuning test on this. If the recording's age hasn't affected the sound (unlikely), then the bassoons might be playing the polka in A major.

Wow - this piece is quite a bit more harmonically conservative than the 1935 piece he wrote for woodwind trio.

Are we absolutely certain that is supposed to be a high E at 1:55? To be sure, it's highly expressive as the ninth of that D minor sonority, and comes naturally out of the line that precedes it. But....there is no change of clef in the score, and a jump down to the lower D would make sense musically, even if it's far less expressively striking. Bassoonists: is there a switch to treble clef in the bassoon part?

Goodness, I’ve not heard this in many years. Performed it decades ago and still prefer it over the more popular Solo de Concert. It’s a unique piece.
