I loved seeing Ms. Fleming in a masterclass with young singers! I resonate especially with the first singer, as my voice was around that “size” during my senior year. I am currently a vocal junior music education major. Let me tell you, a lot has changed in these past two/three years for me vocally! I still have a relatively small voice in relation to opera, but it’s ever-growing. I’d love to see where these singers are now!
Oh how I was I could have seen this 15 years ago, I believe it would have ment a different path for me. Thanks for sharing this, I will pass this on to the students I have so they can profit from it and I will implement these golden tips for myself where I can.
What a wonderful discussion and what an interesting topic! I wish the person operating the sound system would have paid more attention to who is beginning to speak so that we didn't miss the first 10 or os seconds of someone who began to speak!
this was one of the best master classes I've witnessed! He is so generous, funny, and an amazing artist, and so articulate. I good go on and on. He was so respectful and helpful to these young singers. He wasn't afraid to totally point out where they needed guidance. Thank you Kurt.
" Heartbreak ...overcoming yourself... Failure, overcoming failure, being broke ...That's the stuff that's not even musical..." Pure gold the sweet spot in the pocket
She is very young and in the very beginning of building her voice. it's obvious. So people should slow down their criticism. I find it very interesting to have Fleming work with someone that early in their voice development.
It's a great pleasure seeing both Ms Fleming and Ms Foster's expertise. It has re-established many of the things I already do with my high school students and private adult students. I look at this often as I too have learned a lot in doing so. Thank you both. I also thank the students for participating. All the very best to all of you from the beautiful island of Bermuda!
I feel like some of what Michelle is trying to teach them is more of how to be a worshiper and that can only come from tapping into the Spirit. She has it, they are trying to get it. As a singer and worshiper, I know what she's doing!! I'm rooting for them though.
Interessant, dass man sich traut so viele unbegabte Sänger vorzustellen. Sie sind alle auch zu vorsichtig. Geben gar keine Stimme. Eine gewisse Lautstärke muss schon da sein. Das geht nicht nur mir guter Resonanz.
I’m 40. I was classical clarinetist as a major. My heart wasn’t in it. It was in the music. I’m grateful for every chance to create music, or act, or even teach color guard. I always loved Bobby Mcferrin. All time favorite vocalist. Ella, Thornton, Etta, Mel Torme, and of course Frank. Before I walked away from from degree my senior year, I was lucky enough to hear Nature Boy by Kurt. I was immediately obsessed. So I stayed on top of all of his stuff. The Waking is probably my favorite. It just speaks to me. Here I am 40. With that same need to create music, but unsure how to use my training and ear and develop my own style and vocabulary. I kept trying to get a trio together. But I was putting the cart before the workhorse. I can’t move into Trane Changes with pitch accuracy. I can hear them after. But when I go for them I’m off and that just doesn’t work. But it’s because I’m not leading with my ears. I need to build some licks using slower tunes some patterns that get me back to where I need to be eventually. And practice with a piano and a metronome and record it. Same work ethic and heart, so I have the freedom. I need the vocabulary.
Wow💕🎶💕what a talented group. The lady in red seem to be a enjoying it too.😉You really are something else Ms Fleming. Genuine engagement! Thanks for making the world a better place and enriching peoples lives.
Harry Mullany I know I’m late to this post, but can you point me in a direction to perhaps a more appropriate jazz improv masterclass that is less heavy handed? Thanks in advance?
This is a Masterclass. Just what it means...in college we had alot to go through before even alowed...you have to be tops at your study....so if i ts not for you...you aren't on the level to receive..keep studying ..you will get there...😊
33:49 if you don't know, steal it. develop a library in the mind, heart, and throat that can be unconsciously accessed one thing in one song, is in 50 other songs
I am a singer. I am a huge fan of Kurt Elling! This is awesome...and Im taking it all in. I havent found my "scat" yet, lol...but jazz standards, show tunes, cabaret..I love.
oh boy...I just realizedvthese are high school students. please disregard my critical former comment. I thought these were older students on a professional track. So there you have it, lol...keep on singing guys!!!
first singer I could barely hear. Not sure if it's this recording. I was not that impressed, however, I think her breathing could be improved to sustain a better quality in terms of color, resonance etc.
