Thank you! This was very helpful in bringing my machine (partially) back to life after all 4 belts turned to tar many years ago, locking the tapes inside. However, after completing this, deck A refuses to turn the tape reels. The motors, belts and wheels all turn, but it doesn't engage the cassette. Any pointers to guides or troubleshooting for such an issue?
That could be a mechanical problem which I don't know how to resolve for you unfortunately. You can check tapeheads.net or another online resource to help you.
thanks for reposting, this was exactly the vid i used to replace belts on my 605s 4 years ago and when I went to look it was gone. he does a great job.
I think it's because Sony originally used rubber belts like every other manufacturer at the time, except during the 1990s, Sony changed their belt formulation. Any other deck in our current time will have loose belts, while the Sony will just literally melt. This is just my guess.
5:27 You were quite lucky to find those little gears intact. One of them will break (almost always the smaller of the two), the crack will be barely visible, and your deck will become berserk making strange noises, wildly changing speed, functions and lately eating or destroying your tapes. The only solution instead of finding for a replacement is to open a little bit the hole in the middle and apply a droplet of cyanoacrilate to fix it. My deck's model is 605S.
I did the belt replacement but when I reassembled the unit I was not able to insert the cassette to either side? The pinch rollers are not retracting (lowering) to allow the door to close - Something I screwed up? This was not a problem prior to the belt repair
The mechanism usually has a small metal tab that physically locks the tape mech, and prevents the door from opening. It's a failsafe for incase the belt slips off or fails. Try checking the main drive flywheel (the one with a green or white grooved gear) and turn it either clockwise or counterclockwise. If nothing is faulty, the metal tab should retract, and the door can be opened. On my other Sony deck tc-we435, an actual spring broke loose permanently jamming the mech. In my reassembly of the Sony tc-we635, it got stuck for a second on self test, then it fixed itself. Just try the main gear and solenoid. If all else fails, visit tapeheads.net for additional help.
Thanks Ronaldo: with the help of your Video, I was able to DIY my belt on My Sony TC-WE825S. the only trouble or mess, I ran into was that the old belts had melted had a lot of cleaning to do, but and the end it was all well worth it, Thanks ones again
